Steak ’n Shake - Don't go here. You'll spend almost $55 to feed four people and get ripped off, like this. This was just one of the ways they ripped us off.

It had been many, many years since I had been to a Steak 'n Shake so I was unaware how ordering happens. No big deal. We placed our order and found a seat. The restaurant was pretty clean except for the drink area... ugh, the drink area... the QR code thing to get a drink is completely stupid. Seriously, are they afraid someone might get a little extra Diet Coke in their cup or is this their way of getting customers to buy a more expensive shake? The food was good. I got a cup of chili and it was exactly how I remembered it. Two people in our group got chicken strips and my husband got a burger. Everything came out hot and the fries were pretty good (this is coming from someone who doesn't really like fries unless they are scalding hot). We have been back to Rockford for several Ice Hogs games since dining at Steak 'n Shake but we have skipped it for other "snacks".

In this area alone I've had Culver's, Beefaroo, Freddie's, Tom & Jerry's, Aero Alehouse, etc.... And the verdict: Exceptional! The flavor is off the charts! It is as good a burger as I have had anywhere, as in NOTHING BETTER! I had it twice in two days. The only way it could be improved for my taste would be to squash it out more and caramelize the edges like Freddie's does.... I will ask the nice guy running the grill to do it next time... but as far as the bun, condiments, burger flavor it is a 10/10. The prices are also super reasonable! Double cheeseburger and fries, $5.99! That's 1/2 pound of meat. Now for the new beef tallow fries??!! I couldn't tell much difference other than a little more golden brown. My son said he could taste a hint of beef undertone..... They are good, super thin. I didn't realize they had a Steak 'n Shake season salt until mine were gone. Next time. Super friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend!

After paying, you take your receipt and choose a place to sit. There are plenty of tables to choose from and the restaurant is spacious! We didn't wait long for our food and picked it up at another counter. Our friends love the Italian Beef Sandwich. Highly recommend it, along with some fries and onion rings. My husband got a hamburger with an extra patty and customized filling, e.g. lettuce and tomatoes, hold the pickles and cheese. I was happy to see a chopped salad on the menu- good sized, lots of good stuff with 2 little containers of dressing. Quite tasty. If you're looking for something between fast food and sit down, Portillo's is a good option.

I also ordered a side of fries and cheese sauce because if you're gonna do it, you might as well do it right!! the restaurant is tidy and welcoming, and the service is friendly and efficient. The only real downfall on this location is how hectic the parking lot is and the chaotic drive-through. And a few things that could use some improvement, the numbers being called out for food are muffled and the music is quite loud. Maybe adding a digital display that tells you what orders up by the number like they do at the DMV

Even for a Saturday night, VERY busy. She noted that she was surprised it was so busy. She ordered their 4 Chicken Fingers with a Salad, which was served with roasted walnuts, and I had their Spicy Deluxe Chicken Sandwich. Let's start with the Chicken Fingers. They looked bigger on the menu board - they were actually quite small, with 4 of them fitting in a box which was around 3" x 4". They came with 4 packages of the Chick-fil-A dipping sauce which was kind of sweet. My wife was surprised at the small size of the chicken strips. They were smaller than other places. I had their spicy deluxe chicken sandwich with their waffle fries. The waffle fries were very good, nicely salted, and tasty. The spicy deluxe chicken sandwich was spicy, but not that great. The breading was pretty plain, and while the chicken was good, it was not WOW - I WANT TO COME BACK good. They have a nice play area, with a place for parents to sit and watch their kids play. The restaurant was nice and clean, and they even had a place to drop unused packets of their various sauces and ketchup and what not. Service was prompt, we ordered, got our order tent, sat at a table, and the food was out in a few minutes.

I have been here many times with our family and I can honestly say I've never had a thing I didn't like. The most recent time we came, I had the vegan zoodle dish and it was great! Most places don't have something to fit my super limited dietary needs, but TOC did and it was very tasty. The managing of the restaurant has been the negative part in our experience. For example, we came this past Easter with our extended family (our yearly tradition we usually look forward to), we've had a reservation for weeks, and they weren't ready with our table for 15+ minutes after our reservation time, and especially with our group having two 88 year olds, it's not comfortable or safe to make them wait that long with no table seats. When they did seat us, they gave us 1 waitress for probably 25 people, when in years past they've given us 2-3 servers (and that worked great). The server we had was over and above nice and helpful, so none of it was her fault, it was just the restaurant planning side of things that was a disappointment. Our reservations were at 1, we didn't eat till almost 3. Almost 2 full hours to get our food. Granted, it was a holiday, so I didn't take off more stars for that, but that's never happened to us before and we all left with a metaphorical bad taste in our mouths. So hopefully this was just a bad day they had, and if it was, I'd for sure come back. But if that's the new normal, I don't think I would.
