Here is one of my most memorable experiences in Italy. My husband and I came to Naples blindly. We had bought train tickets months before for our trip to Italy, and had planned a day trip to Naples from Rome. At first I wanted to get some organized tour guidance or something like it, and later decided we would wing it.
At the train station we were advised to go to Via Toledo and after we got off the subway station at Toledo we began roaming for a place to eat breakfast, particularly a coffee shop. As we saw Augustus to our left, we noticed a gentleman, a local at the coffee shop bar, drinking his coffee and making eye contact with us, he hailed us in with a thumbs up and a smile. My husband then said, "It must be good," and oh yes it was.
The cafe Americano was a bit better here than anywhere else, and of course that's not saying much. Coffee in Italy has been an overall disappointment for us coffee freaks, the coffee has mainly missed the coffee nut flavor or the robust flavor we've come to recognize. Anyhow, what we along with coffee and a small glass of orange juice was this wonderful pastry, This pastry was the best pastry we had anywhere in Italy, and later discovered, during our day in Naples, that this pastry is an original from Naples, and it's called "Sfogliatella" which was a crisp accordion style pastry with ricotta cheese and orange zest inside. A wonderful treat with coffee in the morning.
The servers here were quite patient and understanding with my broken Italian and I would love to return and try other pastries. read more
