While in Pittsburgh to DJ a show with two-time Grammy Award-winning artist Rhymefest, the event organizer invited us to visit the childhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson. This beautifully restored and interactive space highlights the remarkable journey of Wilson's life, alongside elements of his restored childhood home. We were given a wonderful tour of the facility, which included stunning artwork by resident artists and pieces created by young participants in their programs. It was truly an honor to stand in a space that celebrates such a creative genius. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, this is a must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates art, history, and storytelling. For artists, they also offer an excellent residency program with fantastic facilities. For a first visit, this space is absolutely a 5-star experience. See it for yourself!

Pretty historical and inspiring place for everyone! This is the actual house August Wilson actually grew up in! It's also a space for the community to host events and support artist and writers alike. The home is beautifully renovated but also parts of it preserved very well. The old walls and the new art tell a story of who August Wilson was and who he is for the community. Although they just opened last august, there have been plays and meetings. Denzel Washington was the main contributor in supporting this establishment. They will be hosting tours soon, so snag ans appointment if you can. Also follow them on social media and o. Their website for upcoming events like the block party every April (August Wilson's birthday month) and the different events they will be having. Across the street sits the house where August Wilson was inspired to write "Fences" I can't tell you all the details, you will just have to go and check it out!

This is such a neat space! The outside is a gorgeous old building with tons of charm. But the…read moretheater inside is modern. I've been here for a variety of events (and that is one of the cool things about the space). There are resident companies that use the space, but various organizations and companies can also rent the space. Which means there is a nice mix of programming available. There are seats around the stage (which aren't always used for each performance) and upper and lower level seating. One thing to note is that their seats are not that wide, so if you are a larger patron or have a wider bottom, it will be a tight squeeze. Sight lines are great from everywhere and it is easy to hear. Parking is available for free in the garage right near the theater. A great place to catch a show!

With a partnership with AHN, they direct you with ample signage and the lot is simple to enter right across from the theater! The area is beautiful and very safe! Tree lined sidewalks and clean areas around. The theater is a little outdated in entry. For a small capacity, you stood outside in line for an extended time due to a single ticket taker with a clipboard list. This delayed the performance by 15 minutes as he struggled to check people in. The lobby is centered around a bar for refreshments. The tickets are sold per section (A-D) without specific assigned seats. We set in the mezzanine and entered through the second floor. Some of the seats are "dangerous" with small catwalks and seats perched with no floor behind them. My friend actually lost her shoe mid performance as it fell through the opening. The productions are limited in set design and technology due to the theater size but there are plenty of plays and shows that don't require as much. If you have a chance to check out New Hazlett, I'd definitely recommend it.

There is a variety of programming offered from cabaret style solo performances to smaller scale musicals. There are seating options in booths, tables and a raised platform in the back. you can really see/hear well from anywhere in the venue, but the side booths you might lose some perspective. i don't particularly like the new QR code ordering because it can make it hard to actually ask questions about anything (and the servers are so busy it is hard to catch them to ask).. there are a variety of food and drink choices (apps and entrees) and they are on the more pricey side, but that is to be expected at this type of venue. Overall, a great place to catch a show!

This review is focused on the service aspects, which are less than optimal. We attended on a Thursday night when we saw an excellent 1-man play of Die Hard. The entertainment was highly enjoyable, but the food and table service were frustrating. We came an hour early with a plan to enjoy dinner before the show. They don't have anyone who will wait on you - they force you to use their QR code at the table to order. Most of their dinner options were marked as "out of stock", so we were corralled into ordering a burger or a pasta dish. Those items were very good, but we didn't like the railroading aspect. Post-delivery service was limited, to even get extra mayo - the food deliverer dumped and ran in a flash. Trying to talk to the nice elderly ushers was fruitless with no satisfaction involved. When we had questions about the food, ours even amicably acknowledged that we ''couldn't talk to'' the waitresses. Worst of all - the invoicing included an un-changeable 20% tip! So if you ordered a 2nd drink, 20% was also added on top of that. (To have some sense of control, I went to the outside bar to get our 2nd drinks - and did tip, but not 20%). The frustration factor of how the food service is run and charged for inserted unnecessary challenges into the otherwise pleasant mood for the evening.

The musical performance in and of itself was phenomenal and could have stood by itself as it's own performance. I especially enjoyed the voice of Aja Wiltshire who sang in traditional Cambodian style music. We were amazed how she could throw her voice across the entire audience as a soprano. The pitch of her voice paired with the power behind it and the unique sound of the entire band and flashing lights is quite the spectacle. Greg Watanabe, who played a protective father with a tough past, gave an unquestionably powerful acting performance as he was showing the horrors of a very dark past that comes to light only until later in the play as the plot mysteriously unravels. The emotions and energy he puts into the many difficult encounters he faces throughout the play with his tears and sweat pouring down his body reminds one of the humanity of Cambodias difficult history. Overall, they did an excellent job of tackling heavy subject material with humor and the personal stories of the characters. I would highly suggest this to anyone with a taste for ethnic music and historical theater.

I saw Hedwig at Greer Cabaret Theatre on Sunday. They changed the script to include Pittsburgh references but decided to leave in the line "and the colored girls sing..." in reference to Lou Reed's song Walk on the Wild Side. There were millions of other lines they could have chosen to reference Rock N Roll culture. Why choose this line? Why have white actors say that line? Regardless of who Lou Reed was referencing in the song, describing people as "colored" has a very specific meaning in the context of the United States history. Furthermore, he has omitted the word "colored" from the song and has other questionable songs in regards to race. City Theatre is comprised of a predominantly white board, white staff, and this show was primarily white actors with a largely white audience. I reached out on Sunday and asked for them to refund my tickets. I have not heard back from them.
