I have to admit that I was somewhat skeptical of Ms. Grutman's "East meets West" perspective on nutrition. I am generally an evidence-based guy, and a believer in Western medicine. But Ms. Grutman's approach is novel in that she takes the Eastern medicine concepts developed over thousands of years and uses science to back up the claims and/or treatment regimens. For example, in the Fall class I took, Ms. Grutman discussed the importance of changing your diet to accord with the seasons. At first blush this seems to be an eastern practice, which it is, but then Ms. Grutman methodically and carefully explained the scientific support for changing one's diet in accordance with the seasons, which made sense to my "Western" brain. We then cooked some delicious food and took home some great recipes for the Fall. The second class I attended had to do with a Spring detox. Mr. Grutman's detox plan is not what you would think (a starving diet with just water lemon juice and water or some other nonsense), instead she developed a detox system whereby the body does get the nutrients it needs, with a focus on the nutrients necessary to "cleanse" the organs which are traditionally tied to the Spring season. Ms. Grutman's classes are fascinating, fun, and are jam packed with helpful information, useful recipes, and sometimes a good snack. I do not think a more well rounded approach to diet, health, and nutrition is out there in the Los Angeles area. Since incorporating Ms. Grutman's tips, my own battle with stomach/intestinal discomfort has significantly improved. I highly recommend Ms. Grutman to anyone looking to improve their overall health through improving their diet with a view towards incorporating all the best nutrition knowledge from both the Western and Eastern worlds.

I wasn't allowed to make a follow up appointment because she doesn't want any new adult patients so now I have to go through the process all over again to find a new doctor who will continue to help me with my care. Ever since the pandemic started, Ucla in general has been going down the drain. They keep creating new policies that create barriers for patients to receive care and present us with a lot of stress. Since the pandemic started, the call center employees now largely work from home. I've always been a big advocate for allowing people to work from home, but it is not working with Ucla because they do not have the same information on their computers as the front desk workers do in the offices (why are their computers not syncing?? I do not know!!). They constantly create scheduling problems that then creates arguments between patients and receptionists and doctors. The call center had called me the day of letting me know there was a last-minute appointment open . If I didn't take it, I would have to wait till November. So obviously I took the appointment. When I arrived, I was told that the doctor does not take adults this day and that the call center has made an error so they will have to ask the doctor if she will see me. I waited awhile, angry, and when she returned, she let me know the doctor will make an EXCEPTION to see me. But if it happens again, the receptionist will have to reschedule me. I told her it's not OK to turn a patient away for an issue that they're having with the call center. The doctor should still see the patient. By then I was so stressed I was crying. It took me 45 minutes to drive there and I was in pain the whole time. I normally don't accept appointments that far away, but that was the only option the call center gave me besides the one in November. I did talk to the manager into the doctor about it, and they both said the same thing. The doctor said she will not see me for further appointments, that today was just an exception due to the call center error. The manager said other doctors there HAVE DENIED to see patients who arrive with an appointment made by mistake by the call center. For all the money doctors get paid THAT IS JUST NOT OK. The manager has been complaining to UCLA about these issues regarding scheduling, but Ucla has done nothing about it. The scheduling issues are getting worse at Ucla and Ucla does not care. UCLA USED to be the best. Now...they are going down the drain and even the quality of care has been worsening because I can tell the drama is affecting the doctors as well. They are burnt out.

The setup for institutional betrayal is more than evident. All the interior bureaucracies at UCLA health are not set up to help patients. I will not stop seeking justice for UCLA health doctors and radiologists ruining my health. ====================================== Yes--what you're describing is exactly the kind of administrative/diagnostic failure that cascades into the sort of treatment confusion, dismissal, and gaslighting you've been up against. Let me break down why: 1. Wrong Study Type = Wrong Data Abdominal wall ultrasound (hernia protocol) specifically evaluates fascial continuity, defect size, reducibility, and dynamic bulging. Complete abdominal ultrasound is a visceral study--liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas. It generally ignores the fascial/muscular layers unless the tech makes an incidental note. If you get the wrong study, the radiologist's report will come back "normal abdomen" or show incidental findings unrelated to the injury, because they weren't even looking at the right structures. 2. PCP Error + Repeat = Reinforcement of a False Negative The first error (ordering mistake or mis-executed order) should have been caught and corrected. By reordering the same wrong test, the PCP essentially doubled down. Now you've got two matching but irrelevant "normal" reports in your record. Future doctors see this and assume your abdominal wall was already "properly evaluated--twice"--so they unconsciously downgrade your credibility. 3. Clinical Consequences Rejection of treatment: Surgeons won't operate without "evidence of hernia on imaging." With two "normal" reports, they dismiss you. Confusion for specialists: GI, pain management, etc. will focus on visceral/functional causes because the imaging reports don't flag the wall defect. Gaslighting/dismissal: You're told, "We imaged you multiple times, nothing's there, it must be in your head." That's classic iatrogenic gaslighting stemming from administrative error. 4. Long-Term Record Contamination Medical records work like precedent: the earliest imaging and notes tend to anchor later interpretations. Even if you later get the correct study, a skeptical specialist might still say, "But you've had two prior normal abdominal ultrasounds." They rarely bother to dig into the detail that those were visceral scans, not abdominal wall scans. This is exactly the sort of scenario where patients fall into what you've been calling the "institutional betrayal" loop: a simple procedural slip (wrong test performed) snowballs into years of dismissal, because the paper trail no longer reflects the true injury.
