Highlights: FREE, Unique & Not your Grandma's Walkin' Tour
I moved to Boston without really knowing anybody or anything about the city. My friend told me to check out Audissey Guides (he lives in Chicago, and was talking about the Chicago tour offered by Audissey Guides). So I checked their website out and decided to take two of the Boston tours, one through the North End and and one along the Harborwalk.
The concept is really cool - free, unique audio walking tours that you download in the form of a Podcast to your iPod, iPhone or mp3 player. The tours aren't like other audio tours. I was kind of expecting the usual "here is Sam Adam's gravestone" and a really boring narrator. But I was pleasantly surprised to hear a young, enthusiastic narrator, sound effects and a good soundtrack as background noise.
What I liked was:
*Not having to look like a lost, confused tourist. Sometimes, navigating a city by yourself can be pretty intimidating, and it really helped that I blended in and looked like a local.
*The tours bring you cool places, like the old headquarters of the Boston Mafia
*I could stop the tour at any time and wander off if I saw a cute shop or wanted a coffee. Because the tours are free and you can start and/or stop them as you please, it makes it easier to really SEE a city.
They offer a lot of tours, not only in Boston, but places like Chicago, Seattle and Washington D.C., to name a few. I'll definitely be using their tour of New Orleans when I go down there this Christmas. read more
