That was in regards to the museum being closed on Thursday when the sign said it was open. The volunteer today (Jackie) was extremely nice. She knew a lot about the items. I walked around looking at the stuff families have donated. There was a homemade bed that belonged to Collin McKinney (he was a founder of McKinney, TX) and is buried here at VA cemetery. What I really liked best was the vintage school memorabilia. The old football, baseball and cheerleader uniforms. The school pictures were neat. They had a girl's volleyball photo from 1912 and the uniforms were big, bulky dresses. Must have been difficult to move around in those clothes. Yet, I would rather see those then the mini shorts and tight shirts that girls wear today when playing volleyball. There was also a few photos from the segregated black school. Today it's been converted into a church across the railroad tracks. This was a really neat place. I could't find anything that belonged to my ancestors. Which is kinda sad b/c my 3rd great-grandfather was one of the wealthiest landowners in Cannon. You would think someone would have donated something. After I walked around, I talked to the volunteer. She was extremely nice and polite. She let me browse through a book on the history of Grayson county. I couldn't find anything on my family. This is a nice little place to look around. They're only open three days a week during the summer for 2 hrs a day. Like my previous trip, sometimes the volunteers don't show up. They do have vintage postcards and calendars for sale. All sales go to the museum. They also take donations.

Areas are displayed with a wide variety of antiques, photos, clothing, and personal belongings of citizens of Van Alstyne's past. Entrance is free, but no photography is allowed. A single staff member works the desk. The hours of operation are slim, only a couple a day. If you're passing through it's a neat stop. If you have family history in this area help the museum out by looking through binders of unidentified photographs. You might find a relative or two. My personal favorite displays were the personal grooming items.

We had a great time for my adult $5 admission, and my two young children were free. My four year old, who is over the moon about dinosaurs these days, excitedly played in the sandbox downstairs, and completed the crafts in the craft room during Dino Days. He was full of questions about all of the dinosaur skeletons, the video upstairs, and wanted half the items in the gift shop. He and I talked about the dinosaur footprints, and compared them to his feet. He excitedly tromped around looking at everything. We really enjoyed our trip, and took advantage of the Dino Days experience. As we were the first into the room for the 3D movie downstairs, the man running the movie was very nice to start it over for us since it had just started. As the title screens were still appearing, several other groups entered the room, making it fortunate timing for all involved. We followed our visit with a trip to Pickles and Pottery around the corner, where I had my four year old paint his very own ceramic stegosaurus. He coated it in mottled paint gleefully, talking all the while about dinosaurs. A week later we were able to pick up the finished glossy piece. The Sherman Museum is a wonderful place to take children. The staff are friendly and helpful; visitors are welcomed to walk through at their leisure, and enjoy all the museum has to offer. If you're a fellow parent, you will appreciate this as kids are often on their own schedule, choosing to walk past one exhibit, then stand and stare at triceratops for ten minutes... then come back later and walk around triceratops for another ten just to take it all in. For weeks following our visit my four year old has not forgotten what a good time he had, and continues to ask on most days, "Mom, is it Dino Day yet?" I expect we will be making at least one more visit to the Sherman Museum before Dino Days are extinct.

I am in Oklahoma at our lake home, when we realize on Thursday, we didn't get a canvas framed. We drove to Sherman, Texas, last Thursday to Hobby Lobby as they have a photo frame studio. They could have it done in 2 weeks. I needed it NOW for Sunday's shower. We both were exhausted and overwhelmed as time was of the essence. We turned to Yelp, and found Sparrows Gallery. One phone call and Tammy said it wasn't an issue. So I arrived in Denison, Tx, about 25 miles from our lake home on Friday morning. I arrived at 9:45, they opened at 10am, on Friday. Tammy was calm, most welcoming, genuine, sincere and most helpful. I needed to run some much needed last minute errands and returned in an hour. Our canvas was extremely beautifully framed by her amazing husband Mark. They both are incredible and so warm and friendly. They invited me to an an art showing that evening and I would have loved to attend. They have beautiful signed, numbered paintings from various artists. Mark, Tammy, and beautiful small doggie Abby are an asset to Texoma Land. I have a numbered canvas I bought for my son recently and will take to them to frame. So proficient in art and framing. I left with a beautiful canvas and a custom necklace made by a 73 year old artist which is stunning. Thank you, Mark, Tammy, and precious Abby. For this class all you need is clothes that you can get paint on, they provided everything else, including a canvas, a glass of wine and snacks. The class is held in the gallery surrounded by some incredible works by local artists. The gallery itself is beautiful and inviting. Tamie holds classes in a lot of different mediums and has kids, family and couples classes too. Check them out even if you're just curious about it. She's fun to visit with and makes art a do-able hobby for anyone.
