We opted for this known hotel restaurant because the place looked promising and being already…read morerather late (1:30pm!!!) it was also a pragmatic choice since it was open and offered a reduced menu selection, better than nothing. Alsatians are not known for their flexibility... and you don't get easily food on a Saturday afternoon if you come to the idea of lunching so late in a small village, even a touristy one! Anyway: we ordered to start with a platter of crudités, a carafe of Pinot Gris and a bottle of pétillante. I explicitly specified that we wanted to share the appetizer. After 30 minutes we got the crudités, and the white wine. No water, no bread, no silverware, no additional plate for sharing. I also kindly demanded to clear the table but nothing happens for at least 5 additional minutes (thanks God the crudités don't get cold). The place wasn't by the way anyone so full and there were several waiters around looking distracted. Still we didn't get any attention. I called eventually a waiter from distance and she asked me from 10 meters to tell her what I needed. Finally - after almost one hour - we got our main. But they never brought the glasses for the water, the silverware used for the starter was taken away but never replaced. Eventually after me talking to the reception we get the silverware and the glasses. I guess two stars are probably too much. Food quality is not bad at all, but the management doesn't train enough the many young servers. Their manners might be ok (they smile a lot), but there is a total lack of true attention of what customers need. I have no big expectations from a simple place like this, but I expect the table to be cleared before food comes, silverware to eat and separate glasses for water and wine. Is it asking too much? Otherwise I can eat at Quick or Burger King.

A fine hotel in the heart of Alsace!…read more I stayed at Le Colombier for 3 nights in the summer. The hotel is extremely charming with a courtyard and a winding staircase. The hotels rooms are all different. I initially was frustrated that I had to move rooms during my stay. However, I ended up moving from what I thought was the most pleasant room ever to an even more pleasant room! I started in a traditional room which was warm and inviting, with hardwood floors, comfortable beds and a great bathroom. Then next night, I moved to the top floor in a suite. This room had a sitting area, huge sleeping area, massive bathroom and a charming beamed ceiling. This room had a great view of the city. The hotel staff moved my belongings between rooms - I almost didn't notice that I had to pack twice. I ate breakfast each day in the hotel and it is not to be missed. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. Coffee, tea, eggs, toasts, cheese, meats. The hotel staff was very friendly - trying to help me find restaurants and spots to visit. They booked taxis as well. When my phone didn't work, the front desk person acted as intermediary between me and my mother. It was a nice touch. All in all, if I visit Colmar again, I will definitely stay at Le Colombier. The hotel is pricey, but worth it for the comfort and convenience. Oh - and the air conditioning works great!!!

I have been on the top (3rd floor) twice with the slanting roof and wood beams on the ceiling. This visit I enjoyed the quiet and a view of rooftops as well as part of the canal. There's a refrigerator in my room and wonderful air conditioning - which was needed when I visited last week (mid July). The housekeeping staff fill a glass bottle with water for me to enjoy each day. If you don't like steps, ask for a lower floor. This hotel has a buffet breakfast and a fine dining restaurant - unfortunately I didn't experience either because of planned activities. You can't get closer to the Le Petit Venise canal than this (!). A cute bridge at the beginning of the neighborhood is where everyone takes photos (Kodak moments...if you know what I mean). Hopefully, I'll be visiting Colmar again and staying at Le Maréchal.

Our room was comfortable, the staff friendly, and the location great. But we were disappointed…read morethat our room, one of the more expensive options available, did not have a view. And it was a VERY long walk up many flights of stairs to get to our room. We picked one of the more expensive rooms - a room with a jacuzzi - and it did not have a view. You could see a parking lot out a window, but that is not a view. The hotel does not advertise this room, if you look at our type of room on the website, you won't see it. And we were under the impression that we had booked a room with a view. Overall, that was very frustrating. Not as big of a deal, but carrying all our suitcases up the very long and windy passageway to get to our room sucked. It was a total of about four stairwells, and some of them were pretty long. When the receptionist offered to help said there are stairs, they did not clarify what "there are stairs" meant. "There are stairs" was a huge understatement. These issues were not the biggest deal in the world, because the room was very well decorated and pleasant to stay in. In other words, while I do not consider these issues really acceptable, I still enjoyed my stay here very much. And the jacuzzi was very nice. But I probably would not stay here again. Great location, and I'm sure some of the rooms have amazing views, but there are a lot of other great looking hotels in Colmar - I do not feel as though I need to come back to this one.

I am pleased to be the first English speaker to review this wonderful gem of a restaurant. When I…read morefirst entered this restaurant, I felt that I had hit a true French restaurant. Unpretentious, (the name roughly translates to the "Table of the Market Salesman" friendly and warm, its all about having a good time. I very highly recommend this restaurant. Now, for some details . . . First thing you have to know, is that you must reserve a table in advance! This restaurant is very popular with the locals as well as the odd, well-informed tourist. I saw a few unhappy couples turned away due to the lack of space. The restaurant is truly a small gem and very much worth the visit if you can. The second thing you should know is that the hostess / owner / waitress, Isabelle speaks perfectly good English so language should not be a problem. Her partner, Marc resides mostly in the kitchen working his magic, but he did pop his head out from time to time to see that everything was all right. It was more than all right! Finally, what can I say about the food? My girlfriend had the appetizer of snails, and I had the appetizer of fois gras. The snails were amongst the best I ever had - and since the portion was abundant, served shelled and in a charming glass jar, my generous partner allowed me to sop up the remaining sauce after she had finished the actual escargot. Was it divine? It was divine. I'm a bit of a fois gras fanatic. It's hard to get here in the USA, and when you do, it's very pricey! At Isabelle and Marc's the fois gras was, literally, as good as it gets. It is served sautéed in a pan (not in a pate) with a wonderful side of fresh fig. I wholeheartedly recommend both these appetizers to anyone that wants an outstanding rendition of typical French fare. Our main courses were both wonderful and very memorable. Mari, in keeping with her non-meat preference had the fish, and I had the lamb. They were both wonderful!! Don't think that the French portions are small, we practically rolled out of the place and that's having split a dessert! One final counsel. . . if you can, have some of the eau de vie that they serve there. This is a very strong alcohol similar to vodka, but infused with whatever fruity thing they make with it. I had the pear and Mari had the apple. Wow! If you are familiar with these drinks, you will see that the quality of the eau de vie served here are truly outstanding. Overall, this was not just a great meal, it was a wonderful experience. Isabelle made us feel very much at home, like we were honored guests, not just tourists passing though. Everyone else at the restaurant was (at least) speaking French, and if you can read the French reviews, you will often see something to the effect that this is where the French go for their French food. Please go, and let me know what you think! Say "bonjour" to Isabelle and Marc for me!

This place was filled by 8:00 on a Tuesday night and no one looked ready to leave in less than two hours. When we entered just before 7:00 no other customers had yet arrived and most tables contained a "Reserved" sign. The gracious lady who seated us took the time to read the menu, including the specials, to us English-speaking folks. She even allowed us to sample two different Pinot Noir's so we got the one we both liked. Who even bothers to that nowadays?! My better half ordered the Escargots and the Cordon Bleu nature and I ordered the Spring Roll special and the L'onglet De Boeuf medium rare. Both starters arrived pippin' hot and were delicious. The American-sized entrees were as good as we have ever had. The potatoes, cauliflower, zucchini and carrots were amazing as were the shallots covering my perfectly cooked medium rare steak. It was an experience not just a meal. Though it took a bit of effort to find this fine gem in the Colmar maze, it was definitely worth it. Don't forget the reservation.
