A fine hotel in the heart of Alsace!…read more I stayed at Le Colombier for 3 nights in the summer. The hotel is extremely charming with a courtyard and a winding staircase. The hotels rooms are all different. I initially was frustrated that I had to move rooms during my stay. However, I ended up moving from what I thought was the most pleasant room ever to an even more pleasant room! I started in a traditional room which was warm and inviting, with hardwood floors, comfortable beds and a great bathroom. Then next night, I moved to the top floor in a suite. This room had a sitting area, huge sleeping area, massive bathroom and a charming beamed ceiling. This room had a great view of the city. The hotel staff moved my belongings between rooms - I almost didn't notice that I had to pack twice. I ate breakfast each day in the hotel and it is not to be missed. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. Coffee, tea, eggs, toasts, cheese, meats. The hotel staff was very friendly - trying to help me find restaurants and spots to visit. They booked taxis as well. When my phone didn't work, the front desk person acted as intermediary between me and my mother. It was a nice touch. All in all, if I visit Colmar again, I will definitely stay at Le Colombier. The hotel is pricey, but worth it for the comfort and convenience. Oh - and the air conditioning works great!!!

All provided a comfortable, quiet sleep in a nicely air-conditioned environment but all were a bit different. The hotel name (house of the heads) is derived from the distinctive terra cotta heads that cover the front facade of the hotel. 203 had been recently updated so the bathroom was new with a spacious shower and updated fixturing and lighting. 304 was smaller but had access to the hotel's small balcony out front with a bistro table and two chairs. We had fun waving to the tourists taking pictures of the facade from it. This room was not updated and like our room, 206 had an older bathroom with a tub and hand-held shower wand. 206 was the largest of our three rooms with plenty of room to spread out although storage space for unpacking was quite limited-just a modest closet. 206 had the same tub configuration and also a single sink, but did have a tiny phone booth-sized shower. Our bed was firm but comfortable. My only nit (my wife's actually) was the hair dryer not seeming to work properly. Breakfast was included in the room rate and included the typical items you see in Europe-breads, cheeses, yogurt, fruit -and was served on the first floor above the lobby. We enjoyed our two-night stay in early August and found the front desk staff-especially the afternoon/evening duo - quite helpful and speaking good English. I'm hoping on a future visit to see all the rooms updated in the style of room 203 which would raise my review to 5 stars for sure.

This was definitely a unique hotel. The building is a historical landmark built in the early 1600s,…read moreadorned by 106 distinctive little heads (statues of course). The interior has been renovated to look like a quaint cottage with modern touches (the hotel lobby has a modern look, but the restaurant portion and room I was in had a more cottage-y feel). It's a good place for a romantic stay. I was in a room on the top floor that had a small balcony facing the street - pretty quiet in this part of town. The furniture was not the fanciest, but the room was cute, the bathroom amenities were nice, and I really liked their selection of complimentary soaps and lotions (Nuxe Paris brand). The hotel is gated and there is a beautiful courtyard in front of the entrance, where guests in the restaurant downstairs can sit. The rate I got was pretty decent for the value. However, something I did not appreciate was how they were sneaky about the breakfast situation... As a way of background, for this trip I had booked nearly a dozen hotels, so it was hard for me to remember exactly which hotels included breakfast. (FYI - this one did not.) When I checked in, they gave me an overview, then casually mentioned "...And breakfast is at (so and so) AM down this corridor..." without stating the price, in a way that made me think this hotel includes breakfast with its stays... until I received the final bill upon check-out and the total ended up being $40 more than what I had expected. This took me by surprise because up to this point, every other hotel that charged breakfast would say "breakfast is at [this time and location] and it will cost $xx.xx" and every hotel I've been to that included breakfast would say what this hotel had told me. Overall, nice hotel, but definitely be on your toes for any unexpected charges. It was definitely not a few dimes and nickels for me!
