Covell Gardens is one of the assisted living communities in Davis. It's a rather large place with 3 floors and an expansive lobby. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment with a small balcony. A reliable source indicated that my apartment is as nice as apartments in the University Retirement Community in West Davis. My caregivers are attentive to my needs and respectful. There are usually 3 caregivers on duty during waking hours. The dining room consists of 2 and 4 seat tables with one 6 person table, a private dining area and outdoor seating. You order off of menus and waiters serve your food and beverages. There are many varied activities and weekly excursions for residents to participate in. The most popular activities seem to be the daily exercise class and musical performances. If I could I would give Covell Gardens 4-1/2 stars. read more

I moved my mom into Atria Covell Gardens a couple weeks ago and could not be happier with the experience. The staff are friendly and compassionate and helpful, the community is beautiful and great care is taken to keep it that way, there are multiple menu options for each meal and the food is delicious. My mom's apartment is very nice and has made her transition from living independently in her own home to living at Covell Gardens much easier. I would encourage anyone looking for an assisted living facility in Davis to consider Atria Covell Gardens. read more

My father returned to Atria 3/1/2021 after a bout with sepsis. He is 87.5 and had been at home for four years after spending a recovery period at Atria Covell Gardens in 2017. Going back was comfortable because he was familiar with it and enjoyed his prior stay. One great thing about Atria is the ability to rent month-to-month. There isn't the pressure of a permanent move. He has the option of a rehab/respite stay or a longer stay. We were lucky to have him move in fully vaccinated (with the other residents). The dining room is open, exercise classes are in session, and the theater is open. He found an old friend and met a nice group of new friends very quickly. Having a rich social life with friends that are all vaccinated is really fabulous. This is so welcome after a year alone due to Covid concerns. Atria Covell Gardens has done a very good job protecting its residents during Covid. The staff are always wearing K95 masks and are all vaccinated. They are very strict about visits. This works for us. We can visit my father by appointment and we know he is safe. I think the best part of the move is that my dad is so happy. He is gaining weight (he needed to) and his latest blood panel showed that he is doing better than when I was taking care of him! We are grateful this community is an option for us. He has a first floor garden apartment which allows him to have his little dog. It is rare for assisted living communities to have garden apartments with patios and this was essential for us. His dog is so important to him. Leaving home especially during this pandemic is scary. I am particularly cautious and I am grateful Atria Covell Gardens has a safe environment for my father. Even with the restrictions his social life is thriving. I write this with a huge smile and a grateful heart. read more

Update to previous reviews. My mother has lived happily in the Life Guidance (LG) memory care section of Atria Covell since October 2018, about 65 months now. Previously, my mother lived in the Assisted Living section of Atria Covell since December 2014. We continue to appreciate the kind and compassionate care provided our Mom. Thank you for the daily fun activities provided and creative ways we can keep in touch with our Mom, whether by in person visits, phone, or video calls. Thank you to all the LG workers, past and present (Selam, Eva, Mia, Theresa, Martha, Elnora, Larissa, Cecilia and others). LG consistently provides a safe, healthy, and caring place for our Mom. Of course there has been some turnover in the LG caregivers at times, but the team is consistently high quality and caring. Thank you! read more

Not a whole lot has changed from my post 3 years ago except that this year (2021) rates didn't increase by a uniform percentage. Some people got 6% increases while others got as high as 11% (that I know of) and some rates in between. No real explanation. Doesn't seem fair. In addition, the food is not as advertised (even when Covid is taken into account). Meat is tough (not good for seniors), not much taste, and the menu is pretty boring & uninspired. My mother moved into Atria Covell Gardens in January 2021 during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Our family made the decision to move mom into an apartment at Atria while she heals from a broken hip. We liked there is 24 hour staff on site in case she has another fall. The staff has been incredibly friendly and professional. They welcomed us and have been taking every safety precaution and following state Covid-19 safety guidelines. While my mom is living there the staff is walking her dog for her since that is the one activity she can't do on her own right now. Lauren made us aware of a really good move in discount offer that we were happy to accept. She took the time to meet with my mom, sister and myself and go over all of our questions and available room options. Karla and Yanely helped us get all of the paperwork we needed to get done and were available to coordinate the movers and deliveries. My Mom went into quarantine at first upon arrival. She was covid tested and after negative test results she was then cleared to leave her room with a mask. And she has already received her first Covid-19 vaccination with the second shot scheduled in a few weeks. I was able to schedule safe social distance visits during the pandemic time. She'd sit in the lobby and they have doors that open to the outside on the side of the lobby with chairs 6 feet apart outside for family or guests to sit. They sanitize in between family visits. They still have limited occupancy dining experience available and limited occupancy classes for residents. So residents still get to safely socialize and exercise which was very important to my family. We want our mother healthy, happy and taken well care of and the staff of Atria is doing just that. Mom signed up for an exercise class and is enjoying that. We are very grateful knowing mom is safe and able to be social while she heals. They clean her room once a week and all meals are included. Breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner. They have many choices on the menu and some items are always available. I had the beef burger (an item always available) while I was moving her in. We ate isolated together in her room for safety. I would say the burger was just okay, but mom told me she's enjoying the meals there. Since my mom is still independently living, my mom has chosen to do her own laundry. But there are many options and services you can choose to get help with or not. And many different levels of care. These are all additional costs so you will need to review what level of care is needed. And senior living facilities can be costly, it isn't cheap, but they have a large staff and 24 hour care available if needed. My Mom also has a parking space for her car which is an additional fee. They have storage units available for rent too for those that need to store more items closely. We didn't rent one at this time. So my Mom is living happily with her dog at Atria while she heals. I waited to write the review to see how Mom is enjoying it there. She told me she is happy there but she does plan on moving home later. We moved her in knowing it might be a temporary situation while her broken hip heals. Time will tell if she decides to permanently move there or not. But for now, she's safe and happy. Our family is grateful to the entire staff. They took great care of me as I was making all of the arrangements and they are taking great care of my mom. Thanks Atria Covell Gardens. read more

My mother just left atria's Life Guidance (Memory Care). She had been at Atria for 6 years, the past ~2 years in LG. I have to echo the statements of Lesley M. who gave the place two stars. She said: "The Memory Care caregivers are kind and work hard, but are not able to handle typical Alzheimer's behaviors. Because of aggressive and violent behaviors (typical of Alzheimer's) conditions were placed on my mother's continued residence that were impossible to meet and I moved my mother out quickly. I understood Atria's decision and that my mother's behaviors could be dangerous to other residents - no argument at all. However, because of Atria's 30 day notice policy, we had to pay $7000 for 30 days of care that my mother did not receive, and we had to pay for the care that she actually did receive someplace else. This cost my family $10,000. Making us pay for care that she did not receive because of Atria's decision is not right. Be careful!" This is exactly what happened to us. My mother hit other residents 3 times in 2 months and we were told we would either have to hire a full time caregiver (which would about double the $7,000 we were already paying), or find another place. Fortunately we stumbled one a wonderful board and care home which has only 6 residents and is $2,000 less than Atria. In my mother's time there she lost: her wristwatch, a gold necklace, all 10 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of glasses, 7 framed photos of her siblings and I don't know what else. Nobody seemed to care, though they did finally buy her some CVS glasses and two pairs of shoes that were not hers and looked very well worn. Atria was great before my mother moved to the memory unit, but though most of the caregivers in memory care were wonderfully caring, the whole experience was disappointing, especially finding out what it CAN be in this new place, where she is perfectly happy and has had no incidents of violence whatsoever. read more

My mom lived here for about 8 months. Seemed pretty good at first, but within 3 months we saw it as pure salesmanship. They sucker you in ... and then they know how hard it is for you to orchestrate a move. Basically, they do the BARE minimum once you move in. They also seem to hire employees for lowest $$ possible. Some employees are great, but most are slackers and even manipulators. Also... They did a crappy "renovation" that has taken many months, during which my mom had to deal with uneven surfaces with her walker, moved laundry rooms, and contraction people and materials in the hallways. NOT elegant senior living... Also, my mom is diabetic. We were told that dining room had lots of diabetic options. But she was regularly served non diabetic food, even when she ordered diabetic. If she didn't catch it herself, and then wait 30 minutes for the corrected dish, nobody else would have caught it. Unbelievable... Basically, the Atria is a very frustrating place. It looks great at first, but once you're stuck there they take advantage of you, knowing that it's really hard for older people to move. If you are considering the Atria, ask a current resident if they would be willing to talk to you * in private*. Once in private, you'll hear the truth. I'm now looking for a better alternative and will post what I find. read more

My father-in-law moved in after his quadruple bypass. The staff and residents have been incredibly kind and welcoming. They restaurant staff accommodate his special needs (diabetic friendly & soft foods). He encountered complications with his heart procedure and blacked out briefly in the dining room. They called 911 for him and saved his life. He wouldn't be with us anymore if he had been at home. Atria saved his life! read more

My Mom has been here for over 6 months. Her experience here has been wonderful. Staff is caring, professional and joyful. The facilities are always spotless and lovely with fresh citrus water and flowers. They have provided extra care that we did not ask for to insure my Mom is comfortable. In the beginning I was all against Atria because of the reviews that I read. I looked at all the options for my 82 year old Mom, this is the most impressive available in the area. read more

It's really a great place to live. We couldn't be happier knowing our Mom and Dad are in a safe place with wonderful staff there to assist them. They love the activities, dinning and being social with other residents. It's in a great location and the apartments near by aren't all college kids so it stays very quiet. My mom is living at Atria Covell Gardens. It is painful to watch a loved one lose their memory and need assistance. But I feel that my mom is in good hands, that the staff show her respect and love, that she is given the opportunity for social interactions that are fun and meaningful. I couldn't do this by myself. Atria is bright and cheerful, a lot of light and open space, plenty of music and entertainment. The staff are wonderful. read more

My father lived there for 3-5 years. I tried to get him to move 2 years ago as I didn't think the rent was worth the services provided. It's not bad in appearances but not homey either. This is suppose to be assisted living with 4 levels of care. In the span of a month or two recently his condition deteriorated for some reason and he needed more care which they didn't think they could provided so they wanted him to move ASAP. Prior to this he needed no extra care. They assisted me in this by calling several times a week, hiring private caretakers at $23.00 an hour, 24 hours a day, in addition to charging for their own staff. Atria also kindly stacked boxes outside his door. This did nothing but add to his anxiety and exacerbate his Parkinson's symptoms. Within two weeks I moved him to the assisted living facility in Granite Bay where I wanted him to go two years ago. He is doing much better there and all the reasons Atria wanted him removed have fairly well resolved. For the basic level of service Eskaton of Granite Bay is $1000.00 less per month and more like a home and in a country setting but still with nearby services. Also during his time there he had a collection of very valuable gold coins removed from a hidden location from which only he and I knew the location. A burglary report is on file with the Davis PD with a loss of $15,000.00 I would not recommend this place. read more

I needed emergency respite care for my mother with Alzheimer's and Atria came through for us. My mother ended up in the Life Guidance, Memory Care area and the staff was wonderful. The residents get very personal treatment here, there are lots of activities, an enclosed, large outdoor patio, a quiet library area, a large group / TV room and a nice dining area. What I loved because I have them at home are the colorful Fiestaware plate and cups which have a festive look. The memory care area seems new. When I first arrived there, there was remodeling going on and I was very impressed that the company re-invested here. I don't live in Davis, and in my home town, many of the assisted living homes are run down, we only have one decent one. Sarah, Ryenn and Melissa were super supportive during this difficult transition. One of our family members who lives out of the area was able to stay a few nights here with my mother. She observed that the regular assisted living area had so much going on as far as entertainment, good food and activities. I was there on a Friday afternoon and they were serving wine and cheese in the lobby, I wanted to stay but had a long drive ahead of me. Even my young adult daughter said she would stay here, it it like a fine hotel. Many residents seemed very healthy and active, it is not a place for those who cannot take care of themselves. I was mostly impressed with the care and support of the staff, not only for my mother but for the extended family, we were having a difficult time and I am grateful for the kindness shown to us. read more

After four years that my mother has been there, we can see such a deep decline in almost everything. The food service is absolutely terrible. When you get a meal, after 20 minutes of waiting, and it does not include several of the ingredients listed on the menu, something is wrong. The food that does arrive is close to inedible much of the time. And no one seems to care. I guess they figure the old folks don't know the difference, and unless the family members are eating there, they won't know either. I have to wonder how closely they are monitoring the residents in their care, too, when something as simple as preparing meals doesn't seem to happen. read more

My mother lived at Atria Covell Gardens for 4 1/2 years. She was extremely happy here as was the family. We loved the safe, friendly, caring and fun environment. The absolute best part of this assisted living facility is the staff! Our mother received friendly greetings by staff everywhere she went. Over the course of 4 years, the staff seem genuinely happy to be working there. I was so impressed by this that I asked several staff how they liked working there, and received glowing reports from all. What mattered to me is that all staff treated my mom with care whether it was the unfamiliar staff who work in a different part of the facility, the fantastic med techs who distributed medicines to Mom three times a day, the attentive people at the front desk, the caring support staff who checked in on Mom if she missed a meal, the incredibly hard working wait-staff in the dining room (who know everyone by name), the kind and protective nurses, the charismatic, fun head of maintenance, or the pleasant, skillful director...all of them treated my mother with a loving presence that made her feel special. Thank you Atria staff for taking exquisite care of my mother for 4 1/2 years. read more

Although ACG is a nice looking community and the dining staff are friendly - management of the accounts is awful. There has been a lot of management staff turnover within the last few years - billing statements start reflecting undocumented charges without proper notice, correct charges get dropped, and then reapplied when accounts are audited, etc. Communication with management is virtually impossible - phone calls aren't returned (and they ALWAYS ask to call you back - never do), e-mails don't get responded to, and when you try to meet with someone in person during office hours, forget it - they are always with a "client" or "prospect". I am very disappointed in management and can only hope that things will improved because my father-in-law is basically stuck there. read more

I would give negative stars if I could. The sales person will commit fraud to make a sale. The director and one and only LVN on site are incompetent. The staff are kind but they are not properly trained for any kind of situation. Don't plan on going to management with any issue they will ignore you. read more

The facility is quite beautiful, however, I would not recommend it. My experience is with the new Life Guidance (Dementia Care unit) area where my mother lived for 5 months. I was told that they could manage and provide care for all the stages of Alzheimer's Disease which turned out to be VERY untrue and false. Problems: The 5 to 6 activities listed each day on the calendar were rarely carried out. There was usually just one activity in the morning, and maybe one in the afternoon; usually residents were sitting in front of the TV in the living room. There were several occasions I came to visit, and they were understaffed. The staff told me themselves that there needed to be at least three caregivers present, but there were only two staff for around 16 residents. The caregivers were also very busy and unavailable to residents because they were required to do the residents' laundry, serve food at meals, and clean the dishes. Other facilities usually have other staff that can provide these services so that the caregivers can be available to the residents. Due to Atria's licenses and policies, the staff is not allowed to help with feeding if needed and can only facilitate one person transfers. The facility is not accommodating to hospice needs, like being able to give PRNs. These are just a few of my concerns. Unrelated to care, my mother's account was overcharged by $1,500 when she first moved in. The community business director admitted the mistake, yet I am still waiting (over 5 months) for it to be resolved! read more
