I never expected to run into the girl who sat in front of me at the last Sleeping with Sirens concert I went to. Why I wouldn't expect such similar souls to reconnect, I should never guess. Perfect hair, an enchanting smile, her expert taste in pop punk music and admirable patience at her boyfriend's drunken banters were enough good qualities to make me realize that if I ever ran into this chick again, we were sure to be friends.
Sleeping with Sirens arrived onstage as the couple and their friend sat in the row directly in front of us. The drunk boyfriend screamed about his birthday and how he liked the lead singer's shirt. The beautiful girlfriend and best friend smiled at us apologetically, but my ex and I loved their fun vibe. Finally some human's had showed up that were more hyped us than us. We gave them high fives and sat down to fidget, drink, yell out slurs of excitement, and enjoy the show.
Four months later I sat in front of the girl in her barber's chair, as she cut my punk rock doo and we laughed at the irony of the universe. Crazily enough she'd moved two hours away from her hometown in Orlando, where the concert took place, into a house two blocks down from mine.
This super cool punk rock chicks name is Yoly and may I pronounce how excited I am to announce that she is my new favorite hairdresser! I haven't gone to a hairdresser in over four years, that's seriously how much I've grown to despise those who claim to cut.
Blessed with several embarrassing cowlicks atop my head it's extremely difficult for me to find someone to cut my hair who doesn't stick it up like I'm some kind of Alfalfa. The rooster mohawk is fine, but countless hairdressers have left me looking like a narwhal and I can't stand that.
That being said, I entered Atmosphere Reinvented, located in Cypress Point Plaza, with a dead head. My hair frizzed out like a witch who stuck her finger in a light socket and I couldn't run my fingers through it without getting them getting caught like a Japanese finger trap. I looked like a mad scientist each time I wore my favorite fedora, and that just didn't fly for fall season. Yoly and I began to discuss what I wanted to do about it.
After showing her a few pictures of the short hairstyle I desired, she asked me some important questions. We went over if I'd ever had my hair cut that short before. Since I had, she asked what I used to style it with and how I had it styled. While I answered her questions she shampooed my hair and suggested toner to accentuate the blonde in my hair. Confused as to what toner did for the hair, she explained the process and told me that it was free of charge.
While washing my hair we figured out how we knew each other. Once Sleeping with Siren's and a few more bands were mentioned she knew exactly who I was and had an image of the fun and funky hairstyle meant specifically for me.
"I'm going for an emo up front, punk rock in the back, party all around kinda doo," I explained to Yoly, "Trying to bring the scene look back, ya know."
"Are you ready?" Yoly picked up a pair of shears from her vanity dresser and aimed them at my locks.
I nodded excitedly and as she snipped I watched my shoulder length blonde hair fall all around me and onto my lap.
Years ago I would have freaked out, but this day I put all faith in Yoly and her rockstar capabilities. Not even an hour later I admired a brand new person in the mirror and she was stunning. Yoly had washed, cut, and styled my hair for a measly forty dollars. She'd taken dead mangled hair and transformed it into a fresh living work of art.
Now I can place my favorite fedora atop my head and know with confidence that if the lead singer of my favorite band turned in my direction, he would surely be struck with awe. With a hairdo as utterly original as the one Yoly gave me, I feel as though I'm complete. My weird fantastic self reflected in the perfectly angled side bangs and the carefully trimmed spikes in the back.
In three days I've received more compliments on my hair than I ever had with any other hairstyle before. Not only pleased but surprised, I recommend Yoly at Atmosphere Reinvented for anything from a slight trim to a brand new look. Not only did Yoly cut and style my hair, but she went above and beyond for my friend who wanted to try bangs for the first time. Braiding and fluffing my friend's hair, Yoly complimented us and made us feel like friends rather than just customers. Compassionate and insightful, Yoly continuously checks in on how you're feeling and gives you expert tips on how to care for and style your hair.
