We had a tasting flight of Sauv Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Call me a cab. Each wine lacked much complexity and had a watery element. The whites were pleasant on a warm day but didn't seem to have much of the traditional characteristics of a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Call me a Cab has a great name but I couldn't finish the sample. Wife ordered a glass of Pink Bubbles that was the best of the wines tasted. We did buy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Usually I buy a bottle or two from each vineyard we visit both to support their efforts and to take a second taste while not overlooking vines. Food wise we kept it simple and shared a Canadian Flatbread with mozzarella cheese, crispy bacon, pepperoni, and mushrooms. Hit the spot. Ridge Road Winery is well worth a visit if in the area. But that experience made us feel this place was not that organized for a group this size. Maybe they need to pass out drink tickets for a large group or have us seated. We didn't learn much about this place as a tour would've been nice but I guess with Niagara fun tours it's all about drinking.

According to the rep, Vieni specialises in Italian-style wines and they produce A LOT of bubbly wines for the region. (The carbonation tank is pricey, so not many wineries have it.) Vieni also rebrands their wines for other businesses/wineries. Out of what I tried - about 5-6 different wines - I liked their Sauvignon Blanc AND they also had a Lambrusco, one of my personal fav red, fruity, sweeter, effervescent wines! Family businesses like this are exactly what it's all about. The owners daughter and family were working FOH, taking care of us and their father was pressing grapes in the back. They have a very elegant tasting room and a small excellent menu to accompany your tasting. While they have some wines that are approachable the ones that impressed us were a touch on the high end of prices compared to other global choices. That said, my wife loved their Cab Franc ($45) and while that didn't hit the mark for me I was enamored with the Apologetic Red 2019 ($69 - on sale for $59 at the vineyard). This blend, 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Cabernet Franc using 50% Appassimento - same technique as my fav Amarone, may have been the best red from Ontario that I've tasted. Our 4 wine tasting ran $25 and was served in proper full sized wine glasses. They also brought us a sparking rose to start us off. Service was fantastic and friendly. Generous pours of the wine as well. We had a zucchini fritter to accompany the tasting that was delicious. While I always prefer a more picturesque vineyard to visit, Foreign Affairs does get the most important part right in making quality wine.

We picked a two top and made ourselves comfortable. Our server came over to explain how they offer their tastings and answer any questions we may have. My boyfriend enjoyed a tasting of reds and roses while I had a lovely specialty cocktail call the Peach Fritter Cocktail! Yes it came with a fritter on top!! This is what I love about smaller places: they take such pride in what they do, what they grow and what they produce. Three different people from the winery came to our table and made conversation with us. The draw here are the specialty wines that are only available in this store, and not at the LCBO. They are more interesting and full-bodied than the regular series of wines. Another draw are the large collection of wines available by the litre. They do 4, 8, 12 litre boxes that are very reasonably priced and are a great option for parties or cooking. They offer wine tastings and are very kind and friendly here. It isn't the most picturesque of wineries, but offers a lot as a wine shop. Lesser known, they also sell packaged cheeses and meats, as well as sell Plum Brandy, Ice Wine Grappa, Beer, Vodka and Gin.
