I tore my ACL in April, had surgery in late May and am back to walking normally now in July. Though he is the Phillies head physician he was down to earth and extremely helpful. Obviously he is a wonderful surgeon based on how my knee is feeling now. Would definitely highly recommend him to others needing to see an orthopedist.

The first time I went i had a peroneal nerve injury at the top of my fibular head. He could not diagnose and and gave me a cortisone injection which took the pain away for about a day. I had to go to another doctor to figure out what was happening. around 8 years later I went back to him b/c I had severe pain in both of my knees after hurting them both playing basketball one day. I had gone to one doctor Larry Miller who had done minor scopes on my right and left knees earlier and Dr. Miller could not figure out what was wrong. I was in tremendous pain and limping with both legs depending on the day. Dr. Ciccotti could not figure out what the problem was either. I then had to go to Dr. Mitch Friendman also of Jefferson who told me that all the problems were in my head and that there was nothing wrong with me. I then went to a 4th doctor in Farmington, CT to get a 4th opinion. I then sent my MRIs to a 5th doctor, Keith Meister (the orthopedic surgeon of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club who also verified that I had a tear of some sort in my right knee. I then went back to Dr. Ciccotti to see if he would do the surgery and he declined saying that he would not perform surgery on a knee that was previously operated on... I then went back to Dr., Meister and he recommended Dr. Paul Sethi of Greenwich, CT. Seeing all of these doctors was over an 8 month period while I was in severe pain and depressed that the first 3 told me there was nothing wrong with me or that they couldn't find anything wrong. I I went up and saw Paul Sethi and he took a half hour with me to talk about what he saw on the MRIs. He said that there was definitely a cartilage tear and maybe a severe one in my right knee and that I might have had a minor tear of my later meniscus in my left knee. He said he could not promise me anything, but that he would do my best. When he went into my right knee he not only saw a tear of the right lateral meniiscus and a tear of the artitular cartelige that lines the femor in a weight bearing area. A part of the meniscus had torn off and rolled up into a little ball which caused the tear of the articular cartilage as well. He performed Microfracture surgery as well. I was on crutches for 5 week while I still needed surgery on my left knee. It took me 18 months for my rehab on my right knee to recover. I then had surgery on my right knee and it had a 5% lateral meniscus tear. Paul Sethi was with me the whole way while Dr. Ciccotti didn't even really try to help me. It's kind of frustrating to be a baseball agent and rooting for the Phillies your whole life and then to have the team Orthopedist not know what to do and then not want to help you. I am so lucky to have had Dr. Meister and Dr. Sethi take the time out and really help me when I need them. This review should really be one star, but that would be really vindictive. Well... this is my story. I am sure Dr. Ciccotti has helped many get back to health. He just didn't help me.

Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by Affia. I've had the pleasure of encountering her before, and each time, she consistently brings such a kind, calming, and genuine presence. From the moment I arrived, she acknowledged me by name, which immediately made me feel seen and welcomed. Affia kept me informed throughout my wait, letting me know that the doctor was running behind. While I completely understand that delays can happen and are often outside of anyone's control, her thoughtful updates and communication made a meaningful difference. Her attentiveness helped ease the waiting process and made me feel respected as a patient. What stood out most was her warmth and sincerity. In healthcare settings, it can sometimes feel like you're just another number, but Affia's demeanor reminds you that compassion and human connection still matter deeply. She carries herself with such professionalism and kindness, and it truly enhances the overall patient experience. I'm very appreciative of her and wanted to make sure her efforts and positive energy were recognized. She is a wonderful reflection of the care and compassion that patients hope to receive.

As I often say, if I were a horse, they would have put me down…read more I was born with hip dysplasia and parents were told ballet would help my body. So, I danced until my mid 20s; I was preparing to audition for a NYC dance company when my ballet instructor noticed something odd in my back and hips. I had a pretty bad fall off my horse, but thought nothing of the pain because of dancing and riding. It happened that I had an injury due to a congenital malformation in a vertebrae that hadn't been diagnosed. I rode horses in Hunter-Jumper classes and fox hunted from 7 until my mid 30s and rowed crew and Erg-rowed from 20 until my 40s when I broke that damaged vertebrae and had severe nerve damage from a car wreck in 1993. I had a fusion at Rothman done by Alex Vaccaro MD (the best as far as I'm concerned). I was doing well for the injuries I suffered and was being treated for chronic pain and osteoarthritis. I no longer rode, but kept very active lifting, Pilates, swimming and hiking. In 2010, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, it wasn't a surprise as autoimmune disease runs in my mother's side. Things devolved from there. By 2020, I went back to Rothman for hip pain. I had Stage 4 avascular necrosis of the hip. I was told the hip had to be replaced as well as the other hip and both knees, but I had to lose weight. I'm embarrassed to say that I gained a considerable amount of weight. I was in a wheelchair at this point and getting worse. I went back to Rothman twice, but every time I went, the doc said I had to lose more weight. As good as Rothman is, I think they gate-keep and only accept patients they are sure will recover well, but that's only my opinion. I went to Virtua and was told flat out they would not take my case, no reason given. I asked and was told my case was too complicated. By 2023, the pain was horrendous and I was hospitalized and sent to rehab three times because I could not care for myself, by myself. A local surgeon agreed to operate, but I was concerned with his experience level. I decided to go to Penn and the surgeon I saw could not have been more rude or nasty. He insisted the pain was in my spine until he read the xray and agreed I needed a THR. He still insisted the pain was mostly my spine and told me to see their physical medicine service. By this time, I could not put weight on my leg or get in a car, so I paid out of pocket or medical transport ambulance service, which is very expensive. I was in so much pain that I was barely functioning. I only went to my pain management Dr and my rheumatologist because going anywhere was too painful and expensive. I didn't go to the Physiatrist because I had seen one already; I chalked Penn off my list after that awful experience. I was becoming more and more determined to find someone to help. I spoke to others with my disease who recommended surgeons in other cities, but I couldn't believe no one in our area could not help me. I saw several other surgeons-each one nastier and more shaming than the other (Cooper was the absolute worst and will never go back. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. I was ready to go to NYC, when I happened to see the name Charles Nelson at Penn. I never saw his name before and his name never came up even when the Penn surgeon told me he couldn't help me. That man had to know Dr Nelson would take my case. By the time I went to Dr Nelson, I was at the end of the road. My body was beginning to shut down from the pain and I knew I'd be dead in two years if I continued to live in such pain. I saw Dr Nelson in June of 2025; there was no shaming no nastiness. From that day forward, my every contact with Penn was more than I could have expected. Dr Nelson's team is stellar. My surgery and hospital stay were as good as such an experience could be. Everyone is so kind and caring from the people I speak to when making appointments to the housekeeping staff. I'm doing better than anticipated and Dr Nelson will do my knee later this year. I'm thrilled with my whole experience at Penn! I must mention Dr Bell from Penn's Pain Management service as well and Dr Scott, my anesthesiologist. Both are extremely knowledgeable and exceedingly kind. Please don't ever give up. You just have to push and advocate for yourself.

It has now been 11 months, and I am still not "back to normal". Still experiencing stiffness and pain. I also did months of P. T. but this did not seem to help. One of my biggest frustrations is that Dr. Nazarian did not schedule any follow up exams, except to remove the staples. The only time I saw him after the surgery was when I called for an appointment because there was an issue. First, I experienced bleeding from the incision. He addressed that issue. Next, I experienced an accumulation of fluid around the incision. A large "bubble" of fluid appeared below my knee cap. I called for an appointment and the doctor drained the fluid. When the pain persisted, I called for yet another appointment. After an exam, Dr. Nazarian said the pain was due to a "hip problem." I honestly got upset when he made that recommendation, but I followed through with the doctor that Dr. Nazarian recommended and who did an injection into my hip. That did absolutely nothing to alleviate the pain. I followed up with Dr. Nazarian again, and he then recommended a pain management doctor who would perform an "ablation of the sensory nerves around the knee." Of course, this is a totally "symptomatic" approach to my pain. Dr. Nazarian never once considered that there may be something wrong with the knee itself. Following Dr. Nazarian's advice, I had the ablation done. Of course, since the nerves were chemically destroyed, the pain was reduced by about 85%. But I am told, this is a temporary fix. It may last only 6 months or so, or perhaps a year. Never once did Dr Nazarian take any images of my knee, nor perform a complete exam of the knee to see if it was his handiwork that was causing my pain. What frustrates me the most, is that I was a regularly active person prior to my knee issues......I walked trails, I biked, I play racquetball, pickleball three times a week, worked out at a gym, and now simply walking around the supermarket is a challenge. If you ae considering knee replacement, do your due diligence, get several opinions. I hope you have a better outcome.
