He mentioned maybe replacing my garage door rollers as they are old and it would help the door run smoother. I asked about the cost and he said exactly $100 and explicitly confirmed that price covered "everything," when I asked him if it was everything! I agreed to the work. I was shocked when he handed me a bill for $239 because he didn't tell me the labor was not included. Nor did I realize the high cost of the service call, which was my fault. I said to him what?! You told me $100 when I asked if it covered everything and he went on telling me how much it cost at other places! And other places he worked and what they used to make him do to trick people! I told him he should have made it clear that it did not include those additional charges. If the true cost had been made clear, I would have declined the rollers, paid the service fee for the visit, and been on my way. When I called to discuss the lack of clarity on the bill, the owner showed no intention of apologizing or offering a small gesture of goodwill to make things right for a multi-decade customer. When I expressed my disappointment and mentioned that I, along with my family and friends, would have to take our business elsewhere in the future, his response was to tell me to go ahead and see how much other places charge. After 44 years of loyalty, I expected a simple acknowledgment of the misunderstanding and perhaps a small apology stating this would not happen again. This was not just about the money; it was about honesty and customer service. Instead, a lifetime of business was completely dismissed.
