As soon as he looked at my wife's eye he immediately knew exactly what it was and reassured my wife that it was normal in our region of the country and nothing to worry about. Move to the area recently and scheduled an appointment based upon ratings. I was in the office around 2 and a half hours. The assistant conducted the entire exam, I saw Dr Duss for no more than 5 or 7 minutes, he rushed in the exam room, examined my eyes, asked me a few questions, and gave me the eyeglasses prescription that his assistant had come up with based upon the examination SHE conducted me. The Doctor suggested a procedure for dry eyes even though that is not what I came for. I don't suffer from dry eyes. In sum, around 1.5 hours of wait time. 30 minutes with the assistant, NOT a nurse, and a few minutes with the doctor. You be the judge if that is the type of personalized service you want to pay for. I give it two stars because he took a few minutes checking my eyes with a bright light and concluded that I don't have any conditions that require immediate attention. read more

Imagine having a potential serious medical eye problem and you find this business and you schedule an important in the morning for the next day at 7am only to receive a phone call at 5pm saying they don't accept your insurance when earlier they said they do amd now you cant even call after practice because everything is closed. To make it even worse you call your insurance and they inform they are on your plan and you call and set up another appointment and billing verifies you are covered only to receive another call at 510pm to cancel your appointment once again because they didnt realize they dropped my insurance. Then because after work hours the next day you must look once again for a doctor for you serious problem that should have been seen two days ago. I suggest to all to avoid this company at all vost because it is obviously its a money thing and not the care of patients. read more

I gave two stars since they were friendly and the place was clean. I brought my uncle to his appointment for a routine eye exam on a weekday afternoon. When we walked in, they seemed busy but I didn't think they were overly so. We arrived early, and didn't get out until 2 hours and 20 minutes after his scheduled appointment time. Apparently one of their machines were down as well. They were enforcing masks, but didn't offer any. There are great eye doctors in town who will value your time and get you in and out without it eating up your entire afternoon read more

when I made an appointment with Atlantic Eye Care I made it clear I had Medicare, that I had a spot on my cornea to watch and I needed a regular eye exam and I would pay a contact lens fitting out of pocket which I did. These people made appt. After discussing that I had a free eye exam at another optometrist who also followed a spot on my cornea I was concerned about. I was assured that my medicare would cover the exam and I would have to pay for a contact lens fitting separately which I did at the time of the appointment. One year later, with no bills in between I get a collection letter for $235 which is supposedly what Medicare did not cover. Steph coded this as a routine exam because some idiot here did not code it properly for having a medical reason ie: check the spot on my cornea as well as an exam because my vision I changed. Taft and Dr Calligeri knew I would not have come in for the exam if it had not been covered by Medicare. I am furious, disappointed and I'm cautioning you who read this to know that no matter what they tell you, don't believe it. How I could go from a covered exam at other eye care center and promise of same here to $235 is unbelievable. I made it clear to them that I was fine going to my former optometrist if necessary. A former employee of Atlantic suggested I go here. They told me that there was no problem. I give them zero stars for handling this so deviously. Calligeri gave me similar exam as I got from the optometrist last time at Walmart for free, chapped cornea and did glaucoma test for I believe an extra $20. No problem with her. The problem is all staff and billing. Incompetent. I left a message asking them to take care of this immediately and I've had no call back. I will remove these posts when they correct the problem and apologize. One on a fixed income you can't afford these kinds of careless mistakes anda effort to ruin your credit when they didn't even Bill me or give me an opportunity to correct it last January 2018. The waiting lobby was totally set up for social distancing. Every staff member was wearing an N-95 mask. There were a few moments of concern, when my own mask caused fogging of the equipment, but the staff were quick to reassure me of their steps for disinfecting the room, and that they were wearing N-95 masks, so I could safely lower my own mask during the testing. All-in-all, I felt confident the staff of Atlantic Eye Institute really had my safety first and foremost in their minds during my appointment. I've always felt AEI was a premiere eye care facility. They remain so, but now with a hard focus on protecting their patients. HIGHLY recommended for their pandemic protocols and their continued high quality eye care. read more

Pros: clean facility, the technicians have all been nice and courteous with me (although I sense some are not too talkative or happy); the wait hasn't really ever been too long for me for both my yearly and lasik appointment. The eyeglasses department have very nice ladies. Cons: I came from Texas, so I don't know if this is a different state thing, but the doctor had to specifically put in my chart every single colored eye contacts I wanted for me to order them. Usually I just tell my old eye doctor and they say ok but here, I have to wait for the doctor to ok even the color. Specifically about LASIK: the discussion about it with the lasik coordinator and measuring your eyes went smoothly. Very detailed explanation about the procedure. Calmed my fear and don't make me nervous. Accept Care Credit for 24 months interest free. They tell you when you will have your follow up appointments and such but the timing itself is last minute. I didn't find out the actual procedure time until my pre-op appointment. Then I didn't find out what time and location my follow up appointments are until my actual procedure date. Pre-op: make you watch a procedure to make sure you understand everything. You sign and pay. They give you eye drops and wipes to go home and start putting drops and cleaning your eye lids. Day of Lasik: quickly checked in, gave me Valium, put my hair and shoes in surgical cap and boots. The whole procedure was only 15 minutes. The surgical team was honestly so disappointing. I was sitting just outside the room, and this lady just opened the door (no introductions, did not confirm who I was) and just told me to lay down. Then she started preparing my eyes with drops but didn't even tell me she was about to put the drops in. Any normal person would flinch if you suddenly see stuffs coming at you. Then she admonished me for flinching and told me to not move. Absolutely no empathy for you. When the whole team came in, no one introduced themselves (I can't even see their faces at this point). They just put me under the laser machine and started. Minimal directions along the way (like you're going to feel the clamp pressure now). Then when they were pulling the tape off my face, they were tryna like just rip it off and that hurt so of course I winced- got told not to wince Overall: love my primary eye doctor and appointments. Do not regret the lasik surgery but the whole procedure did not make me feel like I want to come back for any other procedure with them because they have no customer service in that surgery room. read more

Great place to go for thorough eye exam. It had many customers but everyone (except 1 customer had mask on. Seating areas were full due to number of clientele. Staff mostly attentive to cleanliness protocol. Some customers saw signs to not try on glasses without assistance from staff but ignored signs and tried on anyway. No staff intervened. I will be getting continued services from AEI and I am hopeful they will continue to offer safe and efficient care. The professional care was excellent. read more

I thought it was a decent experience, especially with Dr. Felver, until my follow up for my contact fitting and realize that they were completely unprofessional, and charged me for services that was never explained to me. Then their response, from the woman in the optical department said "well, didn't you read your plan?" I replied with, "no, how could I? From the moment I got their the lady at the front desk said she lost my paperwork and I had to redo it, then they dialated my eyes and my eyes were giving me trouble even then." From that point on, all I got was grief, starting from their Office manager, Nicole, who was supposed to call me back to help resolve a matter, who never did. Then I was pawned off to the woman in billings, Julie, who I got disconnected from several times on a few occasions. That very first time of speaking with Julie from billing, who was even more unprofessional and quite rude, was in the middle of of getting my insurance information and never even bothered to call back. I waited for a return call but never did, nor was I ever even left a voicemail. When I finally got back in touch with her a week later, she lied, swearing that she had called me back over 5 times and left me several messages. In this day and age, with technology being fairly simple, I know she either must have thought I was stupid or gullible. Either way, I never saw a missed call, nor a single voicemail. When we spoke again, all she continued to do was emphasize how they were "not being shady", and never addressing how wrongly they mislead me to believe that I had no bill initially at the check-out counter (based on the insurance), and only after that was told to have a seat in the optical section to select the glasses, after having already gone through the whole process of exam and contact lens fitting. I explained how unfairly I felt that the bill was, she continued to show no empathy or concern, and kept blaming me for not knowing my plan. Then proceeded to belittle me for my inability to understand the plan, by telling me that even if I had selected the contact lens fitting and exam, that it wouldn't have been covered unless I purchased contacts, which technically nobody could've even determined at that point since I was still trying on lenses. On another occasion after speaking with my insurance I was told that I get an additional discount based on being a federal employee and she told me that if I don't have a member ID number then it's not valid. So I had my insurance call and leave a message, and not once did I get a call back or was that addressed. Then when I spoke with my insurance company again, they said that Atlantic Eye will not apply the discount unless I go in person so that they can look me up. Not once did Atlantic ever even call me back to let me know of this. Then I called again, to speak with someone different after all of the exhausting interactions thus far. and I was told administrator's info, Barbara Richmond. The sweet girl, Brittney, at the front desk politely said that she'd convey my message to her after everything I'd been through. Ms. Richmond, who clearly knew to call me back, decided instead, to call my insurance and have them call me to "inform of the plan coverage", not realizing that I had spoke to them several times. I have never been so insulted this many times, for just wanting to be treated with respect, empathy and courtesy. I can't believe how awful of an establishment this is. Not once did I curse or become disrespectful, so I really can't understand this ill treatment. Is it a race thing? I'm new to Jacksonville, and have heard a lot about this being a problem, and I'm beginning to wonder. I've never experienced anything like this before. I am extremely truly disappointed in the service and professionalism at this office, and wish I never came to this eye Care provider's establishment. Two thumbs down. I had started really thinking about LASIK recently and wanted to talk to someone about possibly getting it done. My mom goes to Atlantic Eye Institute and recommended that I go and talk to her eye doctor about it. I went with her to her appointment and they were able to squeeze me in for a consultation that morning. I met with Rodney Cunanan, the Refractive and Cosmetic Coordinator, and Dr. Duss. They were both very nice and gave me all the information I needed and I felt like I really understood the whole LASIK procedure and what to expect. I just had my procedure done yesterday and it went really well. I was in and out of the operating room in 10 minutes. Dr. Duss kept me in the loop the whole time, letting me know what he was doing and what was happening. The other surgeons were in the room as well so they know your case and can help you should your doctor not be available. When it was done everyone clapped and had a quick celebration which was fun. I would recommend AEI to anyone in a heartbeat. It's a great place for all your eye care needs. read more

The care and attention before, during and after the procedure was A+... Do not hesitate to contact Neil T. Shmunes, M.D. Surgeon & Ophthalmologist if you are thinking at all about getting this done. They have the most advanced equipment in JAX which ultimately minimizes the procedure itself as well as the recover time. After a 4-5 hour nap, post procedure I looked out my back window and I could see things in my yard I never saw before. I've been a loyal AEI patient for going on 7 years and have always had a positive experience! I wear both glasses and contacts and have dry eyes and an astigmatism. I've seen three of the doctors (Lancaster, Duss and Schmunes) and they're all great guys -- very personable and knowledgeable. Scheduling is hassle-free and the AEI website is easy to navigate. They also do LASIK and PRK, which is helpful to know. Would give five stars but have had to wait a while before in the afternoons (then again, I wait at almost every doctor's office, so not out of the ordinary). Anytime there's a sample of eyedrops or contact solution, I'm sent on my way with two or three freebies. The Bennett Road office is clean and inviting with plenty of great magazines to keep me occupied before and after dilation. Recently, on my last visit this summer I purchased both glasses and sunglasses from the on-site eyeglass store and both ladies were exceptionally helpful and friendly. read more

This place was recommended by a coworker who had great prescription glasses and most recently Lasik surgery. I was in search of a new optical place after the last one missed my husband's 2400 right eye and a left eye with very limited vision secondary to cataracts basically driving unsafely like a bat for years. Patient forms can be printed and filled out prior to the appointment. I scheduled with Dr. Lancaster. He also read my history and asked pertinent questions. Don't you just hate it when you fill several pages out and have to answer the same GD questions over when seen by the physician like you've taken time to fill out the forms for nothing!? Anyway, this office is quite efficient. I have not waited a long time for anything except when my eyes were dilated. The staff were very professional. A little friendliness can light up the place. I was able to obtain my prescriptions here without issues and will certainly be back. Last year I decided I would gift myself with a pair of contact lenses for Christmas. Having worn glasses my whole life I was excited about the change. After consulting my fellow yelp friends I decided to come to Atlantic Eye Institute. I booked an Appointment for December 1, 2016 with Dr Callegari and was super excited! During my appointment the staff was very polite and Dr Callegari was very comforting. After the exam I was told that hard lenses would be best for me and that I would receive a call once they came in. I do not have vision insurance and my health insurance didn't cover my visit so I paid about $1,000 that visit covering the exam and the lenses. I received a call a few days later and came in to try out the lenses. Sadly they didn't work. Over the next few months I came in trying out several lenses (all of which were soft lenses, which she explained would be more comfortable then hard lenses... But I paid the extra several hundred dollars initially because she said I needed hard lenses.) Each visit Dr Callegari was very kind but I was bummed being that we couldn't seem to get it right. After my last visit on May 10, 2017 I was told that we should revisit the idea on contact lenses in a years time since we couldn't get it right this time. I was bummed but understood. I asked if I could get a pair of glasses instead since I had already paid for lenses that I would not be receiving. There was hesitation in her voice and I was told her assistant would get back with me once they spoke with billing. A month or so went by and I didn't hear anything. I called up to Atlantic Eye Institute and was told the person I needed to speak with was on lunch and that they would email her about my situation. I received a call a few weeks later from her assistant saying that she needed to speak with billing and a refund could take up to 6 months even if I was purchasing a pair of glasses from them with the balance. Fast forward to now, I still have yet to hear anything else from anyone. I decided to purchase new glasses elsewhere but I'm still very much annoyed that 9 months after my initial visit I have nothing to show for. read more

HORRIBLE Patient Services!!! It's a shame that y'all go to the trouble and expense of promoting your company for new business at the Home and Patio Show, when y'all just lose your customers due to the lack of helpful customer service technicians. I called your Bennett location today to review and double check my VSP insurance coverage and tried to get your technician to assist me and she basically said that your policy is to NOT check out insurance coverage for your new patients....it's MY job. I explained to her that I had already contacted my insurance and rcvd different coverage from 2 other places....but was referred to you by an acquaintance so wanted to see what you covered. You guys are THE ONLY place I have EVER contacted that has declined to assist me/a new patient with insurance information assistance to gain a new account! How RUDE!!! I was referred to you and was going to be a NEW Patient (as well as my child). But, apparently you don't want any business that requires effort on your part! Our family has used AEI for years having lasix and cataract surgery even though it is out of our network. I've even referred dozens of patients to them. The service is good HOWEVER, if they are running behind or they tell you they have many emergencies today, turn around and RUN OUT THE DOOR! After a very long wait and treatments for dry eye following cataract surgery ( which I paid every dime out of pocket) Dr Samara was talking about a second set of tear duct plugs. He had already done the lower tear ducts, now he decided the upper needed to be done also. Because he was busy and other patients waiting he told me Dr Callahan would put in the plugs. Had I known..... It took only seconds to do, I paid my $70 co-pay and all was good, I thought. This year I receive another bill for $70 for the same date of service and when I called to question the charge I was told to call insurance company which I did. Insurance said all was paid and no issues why I should get a second bill. So I call AEI back and was told I owe a second co-pay because I saw a second doctor......WHAT??? I didn't ask for the second doctor and don't feel this is right. When my son had lasix surgery he saw all three docs for a week but we didn't get three bills... The girl I talked to in billing was a bit condescending and catty as she hung up. I've always really liked this practice but this business tactic has me looking elsewhere. read more

I initially went in for a new eyeglass exam and my exam had been scheduled with Dr Diaz, but upon mentioning an interest in contact lenses was changed to Dr Lancaster. I was long overdue for an eye exam. I also had a small pimple like bump in my eyelash line that did not bother me physically, certainly bothered me from a vanity and using eye make up point of view. Dr Lancaster took care of it immediately and without pain by plucking the eyelash and piercing the pimple and applying antibiotics so it didn't get further infected. I was so happy to be rid of it, I'd had it for months and have had no repercussions since with this issue! Dr Lancaster is very thorough, and takes a keen interest in making sure you are happy with your RX. He advised me that my previous glasses prescription was far too strong for my needs and it was over-correcting my vision. I had no idea because I could see fine with my glasses, but have gotten to the point where they are great for distance, but I have to remove them to be able to see up close. I do not yet need glasses to read or be on my computer. I do however need a little assistance with seeing fine print like that which is on a prescription bottle or small boxes with instructions etc. For that I had purchased an OTC pair of glasses from a pharmacy in a +1.00 which I felt was too strong for me, but was the lowest power I can buy OTC. Dr Lancaster agreed that power is too strong for me as well. Dr Lancaster provided me with quite a few different options when it came to lenses to gauge my tolerances. He has suggested that I wear only one lens in one eye for distance and allow my other eye to be for my close up vision. This process takes time to get used to. I tried the Acuvue products and used the 1 Day Oasys which I thought was excellent, but it is a single vision lens. He also provided me with the 1 Day Multifocal with a low add and a medium add to try. I felt like this lens gave me a little more depth and ultimately preferred the lens with the low add for my needs. Interestingly enough, during the course of my contact lens fitting and finalization of the prescription, my vision improved allowing Dr Lancaster to change my powers to a lower refraction and as such, it now allows me to be able to wear the same lens in both eyes if I choose to, which gives me a nice crisp distance vision and am still able to read a book, my phone or computer up close. Whilst the vision is not 100% perfect at all levels, it is at a great improvement and I love the freedom from wearing glasses every day and being able to see adequately. I visited the office 3 times over the course of a month to ensure that I was satisfied with my options and for Dr Lancaster to finalize my prescription, at which time he also wrote an RX for eyeglasses and has opted to give me a prescription for a progressive lens to cater to all my needs. I am yet to have glasses made up, but I look forward to getting updated lenses that will address all of my needs. Dr Lancaster was happy to spend quite a lot of time discussing and trying options and rechecking my vision to ensure I was satisfied with the RX. At all times the staff are very gracious and friendly and efficient. Dr Lancaster and his assistant are stellar, so much so that now my husband wants his eye exam done by Dr Lancaster as well, we were both very impressed. I spent quite a bit of time with Optician, Catherine, and she has made some great suggestions for when I get my glasses RX updated. I will say this, even though I always had appointments, there does appear to be a bit of a wait time, so allow for that when you visit. It is also a little difficult to schedule an appointment that is not well in advance. I guess this is testament to how popular this business is and how well they look after their patients! I did get erroneously billed for the visit, but I bought this up when I returned to the office for a 2nd review of the RX and upon checking up their documentation they realized they had submitted incorrect information to my insurance company. This was promptly resolved and I've not heard anything since about it. Overall the whole experience was very pleasing and I would definitely recommend them if you are searching for a good eye doctor and staff that are friendly and efficient. read more

Recently underwent LASIK here and was very pleased with my experience. The consultation was free and was very informative and adequately prepared me for all that I could experience with LASIK. Communication from that point on was excellent. The cost of the LASIK included everything such as all the associated follow up visits, medications/eye-drops, and enhancement surgery if it were needed. The day of the procedure was very well organized. I was seeing 20/15 in both eyes at my follow up appointment the very next day after my surgery. Within 7-8 days I felt completely healed and was enjoying excellent vision. I recommend Atlantic Eye Institute without any reservation.
