The Atlanta Falcons are my favorite NFL team. Born and raised in North Carolina, the Carolina Panthers were my first favorite team as soon as they were formed in 1995. The Panthers had immediate success in only their 2nd season (1996 season), making it to the NFC Championship game where they eventually lost to in-his-prime Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in January 1997. Just a couple years after that, it was the "Dirty Birds" who made noise. The Falcons won the NFC Championship in January 1999. They went on to lose to John Elway and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII. That Falcons team, coached by Dan Reeves, with players like future-hall-of-famer Morten Andersen, running back Jamal Anderson, and corner Ray Buchanan, made an impression on me. Since middle school (maybe earlier), I've always rooted for underdogs. I've never been a bandwagon fan and rarely root for dynasties or favorites unless I truly liked that team. In the 90s, I never rooted for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Packers, or Broncos. That's what I liked about Atlanta and Carolina. They were underdogs and I wanted to see them make history. I distinctly remember talking about both the Falcons and Panthers in high school. Kerry Collins and the Dirty Birds were hot topics at the time. To this day, both the Falcons and Panthers, fellow members of the NFC South, have yet to win a Super Bowl. Both teams have made it to the Super Bowl twice. The Panthers were able to do it in a lot less time than the Falcons, whose first season was in 1966. But enough about the Panthers - I'll review them separately. I moved from North Carolina to Atlanta in 2000 to attend Georgia Tech. It didn't take long for me to switch allegiances, at least as far as my No. 1 teams were concerned. I became a bigger NFL fan after I moved to Atlanta. Mike Vick had something to do with that. Also being a college football fan, I was well aware that Mike Vick was one of the best players in the country when he played for Virginia Tech (1999 and 2000). Georgia Tech was supposed to play Mike Vick's Virginia Tech team to start the 2000 season (the fall of my freshman year), but the game got cancelled due to lightning and was never rescheduled. Anyway, the Falcons drafted Vick with the 1st overall pick in the 2001 draft. The rest is history. Vick was the starting quarterback for the Falcons for the majority of the 2001-2006 seasons. The Falcons were mostly mediocre during those years. Regardless, Vick was an incredibly popular player and a regular fixture on SportsCenter because of his exciting style of play as the NFL's top dual-threat quarterback. It certainly got me interested more in the Falcons and the NFL, so much so that I purchased Madden NFL 2004 for the PlayStation 2. Vick was on the cover. It was awesome to have a Falcons player on the cover of the newest Madden game at the time. I played several seasons as the 2003 Falcons. I got to know the NFL rosters really well that way, especially the rosters of the NFC South: Falcons, Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - the 2002 season champs, and the New Orleans Saints. It was a lot of fun rushing with Vick in that game, the then-modern-day equivalent of Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl. The top receivers were Peerless Price, Brian Finneran, and Alge Crumpler (tight end) with starting running back Warrick Dunn and backup TJ Duckett. One Christmas Eve around that time (mid-2000s), I made eye contact with Warrick Dunn as he was headed to a set of escalators at Lenox Square with several shopping bags in-hand. He was by himself and it looked like he had just finished doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. Alge Crumpler played college football at North Carolina and was a regular on 790 The Zone, the sports radio station I listened to at the time. I now listen to 92.9 The Game, which is currently the official station of the Falcons. Since 2004, the Falcons' radio play-by-play announcer has been Wes Durham, who was the play-by-play announcer for Georgia Tech football and/or men's basketball games from 1995 to 2013. Of course, Arthur Blank and Matt Ryan have defined the modern era of the Falcons. Blank has owned the Falcons since 2002. He once walked right by me at an Atlanta United open training in 2018. Ryan has been the starting QB since 2008. I first saw Ryan in-person when he led Boston College to a road win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. That was 2007 and he was a star senior at BC. I was a big fan of Dan Quinn, the Falcons' head coach from 2015 to 2020. I met Coach Quinn and took a picture with him at a Georgia Tech men's basketball game in 2019. He was just as nice in-person as he was on TV and radio. Of course, Quinn led us to Super Bowl LI in February 2017. To this day, that 2016 Falcons season remains the most memorable and special to me. Matt Ryan was both the NFL MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year that season. North Carolina grad Arthur Smith has been the Falcons head coach since 2021. read more

We went to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on 8/13/21 to watch the Atlanta Falcons preseason game with the Tennessee Titans. We took a MARTA train from Brookhaven/Oglethorpe station, and parking there is free. After transferring to another train, we got off at Vine City station, and it was a short walk to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on the side where the Falcon statue is located. If you drive, prepare to pay a lot for parking, and you'll generally pay more for the convenience of parking closer to the stadium. Mercedes-Benz Stadium looks great, both inside and out, and it's kept clean, even during events, like football games. Most of the employees seem to be customer focused. I love that concessions here are the least expensive of every professional sports venue that I've visited, and the portions are reasonable. There needs to be more places in the concourses for fans to sit or stand at and enjoy their food. I know I would prefer this, because I've bought hot food from a vendor at a professional sports event and walked back to seat to eat, only to find out that the food was cold and/or soggy. Stadium seating was comfortable, and the views from our seats were great. The stadium sound system was outstanding, and the huge, 360 degree ring-shaped video board in the center of the ceiling/roof is simply breathtaking! The Atlanta Falcons didn't play well, and lost 23-3 against the Tennessee Titans. I was glad that we went to this preseason game, since a win or loss didn't really matter. This is what a good fan usually says when their team loses a preseason game, but it's true. However, if the Falcons don't improve quickly, this is going to be a long season, and, so far, it has been. :-( read more

PROS: This franchise always had good players and their stadium is beautiful. With recent success over the past few years it looks like they're heading in the right direction CONS: After losing Ryan and Julio and blowing it in the Super Bowl it may be a while before you see a reappearance. This will cause a lot of stress for the fan base unless they get a franchise QB soon OVERALL: Be weary when liking this team. The three stars is to acknowledge a great first three quarters, and the fact they came close to beating the Cheatriots. However, it can't be a 5 star review because we did lose the big game. Although we (and yes I say We because as a Dolfan I can't cheer for the other team) had some great plays on offense and defense, we slacked off at the end. Even during the game, we relied a little too much on the prevent defense and didn't apply pressure in the pocket to the other team's QB. Our play calling was also lacking in trick plays, unlike the evil empire. Although the NFC trophy by itself is just a participation trophy, good job and good effort to the Falcons for at least making that team from the northeast work hard for their Lombardi trophy. read more

The stadium itself is spectacular . Parking in the GULCH is horrific so beware there are no signs posted and you will walk over glass, rocks ,railroad tracks, mud ,around portable toilets, through narrow chain link fences and dodge cars along the way. I was amazed and shocked at not having any staff directing pedestrians and no signs anywhere . Terrible and very unsafe ! Once in your car you are on your own because evidently Atlanta defunded police because no one was directing traffic. There was garbage overflowing around the city and homeless people living under bridges which had garbage scattered about them. Again, the Mercedes stadium is great and I love my Falcons but be careful when attending the games! Come on elected officials Atlanta deserves better ! read more

It seems fitting that my 200th review cover one of the most popular sports teams in Atlanta. Especially now that Mike Vick has finally been indicted by the Federal Government on charges of having a connection and contribution to illegal dogfighting. The Atlanta Falcon's history of victories in the NFL is not something that any of the owners and coaches of the past and present should ever gloat or brag about. Back in the days of "Neon Deion" our team had several seasons where there were only one or two wins on their record. The team was a joke those seasons, and the best part about going to a game at the Dome was never the game itself, but the fat guy from 96 rock that would dance during half-time. When they acquired Mike Vick it initially seemed like the Falcons losing record past would forever remain a distant memory because of the sensational play maker ability in that existed in our coveted quarterback. Instead of carrying the Falcons to the promise land of a Super Bowl win, Mike Vick has guided the falcons to only two playoff game appearances in his 6 years of playing for the team. While this may be a somewhat great achievement, it becomes an inadequate performance expectancy when you consider the fact that Vick is the highest paid athlete in the NFL. With the love hate relationship between Vick and the fans of Atlanta set aside, I think it is necessary to address the specific qualities of the fan base surrounding the Atlanta Falcons. While there are many die hard Falcons fans in the city of Atlanta, there are just as many "fair weather" fans that only cheer for the team when they are winning. The Falcons are not alone when it comes to a majority of their fans being strictly "fair weather." The Braves, Hawks and Thrashers also know all to well how dismissive the Atlanta fans can be when the chips are down. It is going to take one hell of a staff change to get the Falcons back on track. I honestly hope that Vick is suspended by the NFL and kicked off the Falcons. After they get rid of the disease that Vick has become to Atlanta, the Falcons can rebuild and get a QB that has a decent amount of intelligence and can keep himself out of trouble. The QB is supposed to be the team leader. How is Vick going to lead others when he flicks off the fans after a game and follows that up with a slew of off the field issues? read more

Someone once told me to get a Falcon clue. So I did. I read up on the Falcons and found out that fans are called the Falconers, and their mothers are called Motherfalconers. If I was a mother, I would definitely want to be a real motherfalconer. But I'm not, and I don't have a Falcon hope in hell of ever Falcon being one. First-Hand Experience: I've seen the Falcons beat the Panthers away, and lose to the Texans at home. Both times were really awesome. I love the fans inside the Georgia Dome but I don't really love the team. Matt Ryan doesn't inspire me, Julio Jones is great but not as great as people say, and honestly they haven't been exciting since Vick, although Gonzalez was an amazing addition. Wish he'd stayed at my Chiefs. I do love the city of Atlanta and respect this team a lot having seen them in person twice, so I'll give them a 3. Now that I've seen every NFL team play live & been to every NFL stadium (current and former), time to review them on Yelp! I love stadiums! I've been to every cool stadium in the UK & North America, due to my obsession with travel & sport. I've toured America as a musician for 7 years. In that time, I've seen sports games at (or visited when empty, or both) almost every major stadium in US and Canada. I have pictures of most which I'll upload at some point. Also, on future travels, I plan to take new pix, and add more stadia! Watch this space! ***back to regular review*** I have very indifferent feelings about the Falcons. With Mike Vick, I loved them, but that didn't work. I think Falcons fans are a little fickle sometimes, but Atlanta is a young city and maybe that sometimes lends itself to fairweather support. Whatever the case, it hasn't been a team that has inspired a lot of excitement. A few great talents but it's never blown me away. And Gonzalez should have stayed with the Chiefs and should still be playing now, for Andy Reid. Anyway, a pretty average rating for a pretty average team, I have nothing against them. If you're hungry in Atlanta, get a Gyro from Nick's Food To Go and a burger from The Vortex. I've heard a lot of good things about the Ghetto Burger at Ann's, and a few other things, but I can neither confirm or deny the rumours. Also try the Fish Tacos at El Rey De Taco in NE Atlanta, and some Crawfish from the nearby Crawfish Shack on Buford Hwy. I loved the Georgia Dome, the Falcons game, and everything in between. This was my first NFL game and thought it was really entertaining. Also, I went to a great game against Tampa Bay and they WON!! The beers were cheaper than those at a Fenway game, a Pats game, or even a Celtics game (are you getting the drift that I am from Boston or something?!). The Falcons are a GREAT team and always underrated... Coy Wire is from where I grew up in PA, Brent Grimes played ball at Ship, and a good friend of mine knows Matt Ryan well. Georgia dome is awesome. First visit, in town for football game. Redskins v Falcons. While we had good seats (section 111) it really looks like there isn't a bad seat in the house. Even the "nose bleed" seats appeared to still give good views. Good variety of food vendors, overall helpful staff. Over time game and while the outcome wasn't in my teams favor, really had a good time. One and only complaint is leaving can be chaotic. So many people all trying to get out at once, but no incidents and over all the fans do a great job of understanding it's a process no need to be rude or difficult. Good times! read more

I *heart* the Falcons! I didn't even think about reviewing them until I saw that someone had reviewed the Braves. I am a die hard Falcons fan that has been through it all with this franchise. Sure, management has made some idiotic decisions (like Mike Vick) but finally the Falcons are on their way to being a great, respectable club. Matt Ryan is what Atlanta has been needing for a long time. I'm glad the club has purged the thugs and bad attitudes replacing them with seemingly good guys who care about the sport and the team as a whole. I say "seemingly" because you never really know what goes on behind closed doors. Mike Vick had a lot of people fooled but not me, I knew he was trouble from the beginning. Hope that works out for you Philly. One thing that is pretty neat about the Falcons is the game day experience is really family oriented. In some cities its just all about the men going to games and getting sloshed up and talking shit. Sure there is some shit talking at Falcons games but you'll find many kids and women at the games too. Falcons landing is a really neat experience for kids and adults. Enjoyed my first NFL game against The Vikings. Front row season ticket seats on the 10 yard line!!!! The food choices were numerous. I chose a taco salad (the fried shell bowls are one of my weaknesses). It was great!! I asked for dbl meat and rec'd with no charge. There was really no need bc the amounts are plentiful. My sister had chicken and waffles. The syrup/butter dip was AMAZING. Happy...Happy. read more
