Band for Entry to one of the Clubs.

The Atlanta Hawks provides a great game experience and atmosphere. The cheerleaders are entertaining and very engaged during the game and their performances. They also have plenty of different acts and contests during timeouts for fan engagement that also give you opportunities to win prizes. If your privy to one of the many clubs available, your game experience is thrust to the next level as they are all inclusive which provides you with unlimited food and beverage options including beer, wine, and spirits depending on which club your in out of the Delta 360 Club, Harrah's Chef's Club, Atlanta Social Club, the Concert Club or the Player's Club. The Hawks also play a good brand of basketball that is very competitive. Trae Young is a must see young burgeoning star in the league that keeps you in edge of your seat waiting to see what he's going to do next. All in all if the opportunity presents itself to check out an Atlanta Hawks Game I'd say do not pass it up.

I'm giving the Hawks 4 stars because on Yelp, 4 stars means "Yay! I'm a fan." If I rated the Hawks based on their historical performance on the court, I'd give them 3 stars. I must preface this review by saying I am an Atlanta transplant. I grew up as and still am a die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan. However, since moving to Atlanta in 2000, the city and the Hawks have slowly grown on me. The Hawks are my "No. 2" team. I support them and consider myself a fan. I've attended Hawks games at Philips Arena every year for the past 13 years. At a minimum, I attend when the Spurs are in town. Over the past dozen+ years, I've seen almost all 30 NBA teams roll through Philips. Any time the Hawks are on TV, whether it's Fox Sports South ("FSHAWKS"), SportSouth, etc, I'm always tuned in. If the Hawks are playing on national TV (TNT or ESPN), I still prefer the local broadcast with Bob Rathbun and Dominique Wilkins. They know the team better. I'm also a fan of reporter Jerome Jurenovich and analyst Mike Glenn (the "Stinger"). If I'm in my car or in the shower and the Hawks are playing, my radio is tuned to Steve Holman's broadcast. My earliest memories of the Hawks are, like most people, the Dominique era. Dominique was one of the best dunkers in the NBA Showdown, NBA Live, and NBA Jam video games. Dominique was really the only true NBA superstar the Hawks ever had, which is kind of baffling to me considering the city of Atlanta. Atlanta is one of the top NBA media markets. Also, I once heard the "statistic" that more NBA players make Atlanta their off-season home than any other city in the country. Fans love NBA basketball down here, but the fans don't love the Hawks. Ted Turner and Turner Broadcasting/Time Warner owned the Hawks from 1977 until 2004, when the team was sold to Turner's son, son-in-law, and other businessmen known as the "Atlanta Spirit." You can read my review of the Atlanta Spirit here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/atlanta-spirit-atlanta. I didn't start following the Hawks closely until the 2000-01 season, when the Hawks' 1999 draft pick Jason Terry led the team. That season would be the second of nine straight losing seasons for the Hawks, almost a decade. The first eight of those seasons, we didn't make the playoffs. I liked Jason Terry, but he wasn't a franchise player. Moves were made to surround Terry with better players and eventually, a "Big 3" was formed in Atlanta with Terry, "Big Dog" Glenn Robinson, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The best that group could do was 35-47. The team went through three coaches in three seasons (Lon Kruger, Terry Stotts, and Mike Woodson) and the Spirit came in and blew up the team. The Hawks were atrocious. It was all capped off by the 13-69 season (.159 winning percentage) in 2004-05, which was the NBA's worst record that year. That terrible season resulted in the No. 2 pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, in which the Hawks made one of its worst all-time draft decisions ever: they drafted Marvin Williams instead of Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Marvin Williams turned out to be an OK player, but Chris Paul and Deron Williams turned out to be two of the best point guards in the NBA. What was mind-boggling was the Hawks needed a point guard, yet they drafted a forward, of which the team already had many. At the time, the thinking was Marvin Williams had the highest ceiling of any player in that year's draft class. CP3 and D-Will, however, were already proven commodities. The 2005 draft was one of two major blunders that summer of then-GM Billy Knight's career. Knight also oversaw the trade of Boris Diaw and two draft picks to Phoenix in a sign-and-trade for Joe Johnson. You can read more about my thoughts of the Joe Johnson trade in my review of the Atlanta Spirit. Joe Johnson was signed to a maximum salary contract and would be the face of the Hawks franchise for the next seven seasons. The Joe Johnson era in Atlanta was not a bad one. We made the playoffs the last five seasons. That's pretty good if you consider how bad we were the decade prior. The nucleus of Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford, and Marvin Williams (the latter three all Hawks draft picks) produced many wins. However, that group could never advance past the second round of the playoffs. June 2012: Enter Danny Ferry as new Hawks GM (replacing Rick Sund). In just a couple weeks on the job, Ferry was already able to trade away Johnson's enormous contract to Brooklyn for a bunch of role players *and* trade away Marvin Williams to Utah for PG Devin Harris. Amazing. Ferry means business and the next year should be exciting for Atlanta fans as we wait to see who the team gets with all of its salary cap space and pending big name free agents set to be on the market. I have faith in Danny Ferry, especially with his experience working in the Spurs' front office. He has given the Hawks the opportunity to sign a superstar like Dwight Howard or Chris Paul... or both.

The Hawks get one star for being a professional franchise, and one star for the show they put on at Philips Arena for games. And by performance, I'm talking about everything except what you're seeing on the court. Hawks games have turned into a place to be seen and to spot celebs sitting court-side. The team has been abysmal for the last few years, and hasn't made the playoffs since 1999. A large number of fans at Hawks games are there to see the superstars on visiting teams, not the Hawks. Atlanta's definitely a basketball town (huge TV ratings for NBA playoffs in Atlanta), and if the Hawks could ever put together a consistent level of play the fans would start to come back. But I'm not holding my breath for that one.

I attended State Farm arena on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, to watch them play the Washington Wizards. After talking to an usher, I found out the arena had recently (7 months ago) been renovated. I knew the team had a terrible record, and that was probably why I was able to see the game for $12, along with the fact that the Wizards were doing terrible too. My ticket was halfway up the arena behind the visitor's backboard. The arena was only half full, but I was able to watch an NBA game in a brand new arena, for a very cheap price. I'm a Lakers fan, but I enjoyed watching the Hawks and was actually sad when they lost, 131-117. Wish I could have seen a Hawks game when Dominique Wilkins was still playing, but I'm sure I couldn't have paid just $12 to watch that game. I was happy to see old Vince Carter and Jeremy Lin are second string Hawks. Got to see Carter slam dunk. Overall, a very good experience, and I'm glad I went.

Ahhh COME ON guys!!!! Where is the love because I am NOT feeling any here for the Hawks in this room today! I am new to the "A" but I am a die hard sports fan. I brought 7 (that's right) tix to see Hawks v Nets and we were NOT disappointed! Most of the ladies of my family came out and we represented! Even my 60yo aunt had an outstanding time! What is there NOT to love about these guys!?!?! I'm from Chicago so of course I'm loving Kirk Hinrich (former Bull) but Teague is a powerhouse and stole the show!!! The half time show was great, I love all that little stuff they add in to make the entire experience totally worthy. Win or lose, you gotta show love for your home team guys, come on, GET in the GAME. I was almost depressed to see so many empty seats, if you want them to win, you gotta show them love...I'll definitely be returning and BTW, they WON! It was an AWESOME game!!! This is even a great first date, don't believe me, just try it!!!

I can't believe how full it is on a Wednesday night!!!

I'm very much fascinated about the growth of the team, they are doing an amazing job and they remain grounded. I sure hope they keep it up. When we became members the beginning of year 2014, I was a bit disappointed that the fans were not supporting the team so much. The only time that the arena gets full was when a star player from another team played against the Hawks. We could walk in the Red Ciroc bar without reservation and still get great seats, you can't do that anymore. It's packed all the time. I'm not sad about that at all, it's quite the opposite. It's about time they showed up. It's definitely much more fun now, crazy Hawks fans everywhere!!! Even celebrities and sports personalities check out the game more often than beginning of the year. I also love the halftime performances of children from local schools of different counties. "Harry The Hawk" mascot is quite entertaining as well, you never know what he'll do, he dances, he sings, and do other crazy stuff. Come check out one of their games, you won't be disappointed.

I love the Atlanta Hawks. These guys are a team and play like it. Steve has added such depth into our community, and I'm so excited about the new owners. Throw in Kyle, Bazemore, Musky, Al and Teague always in the community, what could you ask for?? Oh, and name any team in the east that has been in more consecutive playoffs...not the Heat, Celtics, Bulls....your Atlanta Hawks!! #TrueToAtlanta

The Atlanta Falcons are my favorite NFL team…read more Born and raised in North Carolina, the Carolina Panthers were my first favorite team as soon as they were formed in 1995. The Panthers had immediate success in only their 2nd season (1996 season), making it to the NFC Championship game where they eventually lost to in-his-prime Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in January 1997. Just a couple years after that, it was the "Dirty Birds" who made noise. The Falcons won the NFC Championship in January 1999. They went on to lose to John Elway and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII. That Falcons team, coached by Dan Reeves, with players like future-hall-of-famer Morten Andersen, running back Jamal Anderson, and corner Ray Buchanan, made an impression on me. Since middle school (maybe earlier), I've always rooted for underdogs. I've never been a bandwagon fan and rarely root for dynasties or favorites unless I truly liked that team. In the 90s, I never rooted for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Packers, or Broncos. That's what I liked about Atlanta and Carolina. They were underdogs and I wanted to see them make history. I distinctly remember talking about both the Falcons and Panthers in high school. Kerry Collins and the Dirty Birds were hot topics at the time. To this day, both the Falcons and Panthers, fellow members of the NFC South, have yet to win a Super Bowl. Both teams have made it to the Super Bowl twice. The Panthers were able to do it in a lot less time than the Falcons, whose first season was in 1966. But enough about the Panthers - I'll review them separately. I moved from North Carolina to Atlanta in 2000 to attend Georgia Tech. It didn't take long for me to switch allegiances, at least as far as my No. 1 teams were concerned. I became a bigger NFL fan after I moved to Atlanta. Mike Vick had something to do with that. Also being a college football fan, I was well aware that Mike Vick was one of the best players in the country when he played for Virginia Tech (1999 and 2000). Georgia Tech was supposed to play Mike Vick's Virginia Tech team to start the 2000 season (the fall of my freshman year), but the game got cancelled due to lightning and was never rescheduled. Anyway, the Falcons drafted Vick with the 1st overall pick in the 2001 draft. The rest is history. Vick was the starting quarterback for the Falcons for the majority of the 2001-2006 seasons. The Falcons were mostly mediocre during those years. Regardless, Vick was an incredibly popular player and a regular fixture on SportsCenter because of his exciting style of play as the NFL's top dual-threat quarterback. It certainly got me interested more in the Falcons and the NFL, so much so that I purchased Madden NFL 2004 for the PlayStation 2. Vick was on the cover. It was awesome to have a Falcons player on the cover of the newest Madden game at the time. I played several seasons as the 2003 Falcons. I got to know the NFL rosters really well that way, especially the rosters of the NFC South: Falcons, Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - the 2002 season champs, and the New Orleans Saints. It was a lot of fun rushing with Vick in that game, the then-modern-day equivalent of Bo Jackson in Tecmo Super Bowl. The top receivers were Peerless Price, Brian Finneran, and Alge Crumpler (tight end) with starting running back Warrick Dunn and backup TJ Duckett. One Christmas Eve around that time (mid-2000s), I made eye contact with Warrick Dunn as he was headed to a set of escalators at Lenox Square with several shopping bags in-hand. He was by himself and it looked like he had just finished doing some last-minute Christmas shopping. Alge Crumpler played college football at North Carolina and was a regular on 790 The Zone, the sports radio station I listened to at the time. I now listen to 92.9 The Game, which is currently the official station of the Falcons. Since 2004, the Falcons' radio play-by-play announcer has been Wes Durham, who was the play-by-play announcer for Georgia Tech football and/or men's basketball games from 1995 to 2013. Of course, Arthur Blank and Matt Ryan have defined the modern era of the Falcons. Blank has owned the Falcons since 2002. He once walked right by me at an Atlanta United open training in 2018. Ryan has been the starting QB since 2008. I first saw Ryan in-person when he led Boston College to a road win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. That was 2007 and he was a star senior at BC. I was a big fan of Dan Quinn, the Falcons' head coach from 2015 to 2020. I met Coach Quinn and took a picture with him at a Georgia Tech men's basketball game in 2019. He was just as nice in-person as he was on TV and radio. Of course, Quinn led us to Super Bowl LI in February 2017. To this day, that 2016 Falcons season remains the most memorable and special to me. Matt Ryan was both the NFL MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year that season. North Carolina grad Arthur Smith has been the Falcons head coach since 2021.

After seeing my first 'bout' this weekend, two conclusions: 1) Yes. It would indeed be awesome to be an Atlanta Roller Girl in general. and 2) No. It would not be awesome to be a Roller Girl for ME specifically because I would whine about getting hurt, and probably try to instinctively dodge the other girls instead of whack! bam! smack! hitting them like they're supposed to. So, with shattered daydreams about my potential career as a Roller Girl, the second best thing to do, of course, is tell you why you should go watch 'em. The lovely ladies are all doing their bad arse rollin' and derby-ing for the passion . . .and not for the money, because, well, there isn't any. They are all much tougher than I, and nary a tear did I see. You can tell that they're having a good time, there's a ton of team camaraderie and of course, having fun wearing their crazy and fun 'uniforms.' With team like the Denim Demons and Toxic Shock, there are quite a few opportunities for creativity! As a spectator, aside from the roller derby action, the best part I must say is the BYOB functionality. You certainly can't BYOB (well. openly.) to a Braves game, now can ya? And the randomness that they are in the Yaarab Shrine Center on Ponce. Like, girls in skates and fishnets play in the the same place the dudes with tassel hats hang out. You can buy fried shrimp, roller girl t-shirts, and watch the Atlanta teams go head to head, then stick around for the out of town team games and show your Atlanta home team spirit. Their season runs March thru September, and the 2008 season opener tickets sold out a few days before the actual bouts, so plan ahead! The closest I'll come to actually being a Roller Girl is sitting on the front row danger zone, where girls slid into the audience a couple times. But with my BYOB and a comfy spot in the stands? Definitely how I like to roll.

Like the Seattle Sounders, Atlanta United is honestly one of the great success stories in North American football aka soccer. I would say that even more so because they managed to penetrate a market that usually isn't that great, as in, Atlanta sports, nah. The city is a transient city, a hipster city, a music city, a culture city, a liberal city, and a booming city, and none of those things support sports teams the way that, say, Pittsburgh does. All this time, Atlanta was begging for some kind of a less-All-American sport that was inclusive of everybody, the NFL is popular here but not like it is in a Dallas or a Philly even, and the city is a little more left-wing. The sports desires of ATL (parts of ATL anyway) showed up in the form of Atlanta United, who have been able to absolutely pack Mercedes-Benz stadium the same way the Falcons do (or moreso), in a way that only the Seattle Sounders can really be compared to. Bravo. Most clubs need to get into their own stadium so they don't have 3/4 of the stadium empty, whereas Atlanta United do just fine filling up an NFL stadium. It's remarkable and amazing. It helps that they were one of the best teams from day one. Hiring the best coaches (Martino anyway, less so DeBoer), and doing an amazing job all along. We're so proud of them and we're so happy with what they've managed to do. ATL is our southern home away from home, shared capital of the south (with Houston, not with Dallas). We will probably always be fans of them because of what they've managed to do and we're very proud as I said. I hope that they're able to sustain it and I think that they will do somehow. After LAFC, maybe alongside the likes of Toronto FC, Montreal, Sounders, and Red Bull NY, this is one of our fave teams in MLS.
