My teenage daughter was hospitalized for almost three weeks in Albany Medical Center as she fought for her life after being diagnosed with a misunderstood eating disorder called Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Her Digestive system was shutting down, and every meal was causing GI pain. She suffered from extreme anxiety, PTSD, and depression and had zero quality of life. After "force feeding" her to get her to stabilize medically, the hospital discharged her without a solid care plan in place. She was still struggling through every bite and the anxiety and physical discomfort each moment brought her. She would no doubt have been re-hospitalized within weeks of her discharge if it had not been for Dr. Helm. He carefully evaluated her two days after her hospital discharge. Dr. Helm provided caring attention for four days straight, diagnosed some neurological issues causing her anxiety symptoms, and literally "woke up" her digestive system within one four-hour session. My daughter literally said that her food tasted good again after one of four sessions! She could actually enjoy food and get through a meal without pain, discomfort, panic, nausea, and anxiety for the first time in an entire year or more! What was just as remarkable was the fact that her anxiety was down. We saw peace come over her for the first time in years while working with Dr. Helm. We watched her transform before our eyes and now had a fighting chance to recover successfully. Our daughter left treatment with Dr. Helm, a different person than when first arriving at his door. After the treatment, he gave her some brain exercises to do on her own and followed up with us often to check in on her progress. It has been seven months since our visit, and she has fully recovered and moved on with new confidence, succeeding in college! Dr. Helm is nothing short of a miracle worker.

I'm a new member of the gym itself, so this is going off my first impression. I've also read…read morethrough some of the reviews (both good and bad). Many of the reviews are old and dated. (I've been a member of the Summer Club pool with my family for a couple of years). Pro - As many have pointed out, this is a CLUB and not a gym. The place is nice on the inside. Considering it's a club, the price seems fairly appropriate when compared to something like a BSC. The price falls very appropriately. If I wanted a Gold's or plant fitness, I'd pay 10 to 60 month, and I'd expect what I pay for. The interior style is a classic leather couch and finished wood vibe. Very comfortable. It's not sleek black and steel type place. The equipment is definitely new, and it is kept. I haven't seen any out-of-order signs. Pro - It offers an extensive array of things to do. From the gyms, spa, sauna, indoor track, classes like yoga, spin, pilates, HIIT, tennis racket, golf swing area, and more. There are tennis courts (see cons) and indoor rock climbing, a hair salon, martial arts dojo, massage therapy and associated treatments centers for rehab and more. I will note that a few things like martial art lessons or tennis lessons are separate costs. Most things that I've mentioned are included in your membership tho. Pro - The place is clean. I've been to other clubs where the locker rooms are dirty, unkempt, smell bad, broken, and neglected. This is not the case. I think this is important to note because it demonstrates the club keeps a standard. This seems true for the rest of the building and the gym areas as well. I appreciate this fact. Pro - Plenty of up-to-date equipment. I've gone early in the morning and at a few different times. I've never struggled. I once waited for a person to finish using something. It wasn't a big deal. I've experienced far worse at a YMCA or Gold's. Pro - Children and Youth activities. This is robust. I haven't fully explored it, but I've poked my head into that area, and it seems great. Unfortunately, I can't speak more directly about the offerings. Pro - The staff has been very helpful and friendly thus far. There are a few that seem busier than others. When I've had a question, I've just asked the person that wasn't as busy, and they were very nice and took the time to answer me. Staff are available, around and friendly. Pro - (Separate Costs) Outdoor Summer Club and Summer Camp. I want to mention them because the club is that BIG. There's a full waterpark with slides, enormous climbing structures, and tennis courts in the back, and you can watch kids and families play while on the treadmills. It's a cool way to zone out while burning calories. We do the Summer Club with some other families. Honestly, it's a hidden gem, and I feel it is cost appropriate. I can't speak to the Summer Camp experience. Cons - I would give this 5 stars except our experience with the Tennis courts. Even as members, we struggle to get a court. It's frustrating, as others have mentioned. On the weekend, my younger son wants to play. He's been driven off by some sort of program that is dominating the courts. The program is simply claiming all the courts and not leaving any available to the public. My wife asked last weekend why this was, and she said the person running the program became very defensive and told her to take it up with the director of programming. I will take his recommendation and speak to the director to understand and clarity. Unfortunately, I feel some of the other reviews are valid with their frustration in this area. As a well-invested member, I think we should have consistent access. As of now, I wouldn't even classify the courts as providing reasonably limited access. At best, it seems extremely limited access. It's an advertised feature to members, which understandably creates a degree of frustration. Cons - The rock climbing center is still down due to Covid. At this point, I believe we have been out of the woods from Covid, so I don't understand why it's not reopening. It's an also advertised feature, even if they just did limited hours on weekends or something. Cons - I feel like some of the facilities and areas are fully operational after Covid. I remember visiting this place pre-Covid, and the little Cafe was open and offering smoothies and things. It doesn't seem to be happening right now. I could also be missing the times when it is open. Idk. Hope this helps!

However, in November 2024 we had a bizarre experience. My husband was having a civilized conversation with a fellow member the day after the presidential election when suddenly the director of the fitness center broke in uninvited and launched into an unprovoked verbal attack based on false assumptions about his political views. After staying away for a year and a half, we recently considered rejoining because of a health need for specific classes that are not available elsewhwere. However, the management refused to speak to their employee about his bullying behavior or to mediate in any way. I would not recommend this club to anyone who expects to feel safe and respected.

When I asked when I could have another appointment they told me 4 weeks from now, which I considered outrageous. When I let them know how I NEED this procedure done, then they gave me an appointment for the week after. Dr. Hartshorn, is amazing otherwise, he takes the time to listen, and give you options. They have snacks, coffee, and the office is super clean. The staff is super friendly. I just feel like, as someone who can barely put any weight on her foot, and then pain is so bad that I can't sleep, that this is not considered urgent and therefore it gets canceled.

The pain was excruciating, and continued to get worse over time. One of my colleagues who was seriously injured in a surfing incident a year earlier, that basically destroyed his shoulder (broken bones etc) had been treated by Dr. Tim Hartshorn, and recovered completely recommended that I go see him. I did, and I IMMEDIATELY knew I was in the right place, with the right doctor. Ultimately, I required surgery to repair my shoulder, but prior to actually scheduling surgery, I needed to finish out the work season on light duty. Dr. Hartshorn gave me direct steroid injections to the shoulder joint over the course of the next few months to get me through the rest of that season. At the end of the season, I went in for surgery in the morning, and was back home that afternoon. Almost immediately, Dr. Hartshorn had me on a physical therapy routine that got me moving my newly repaired shoulder in short order. Over the course of the next several weeks, the pain subsided, my range of motion returned as I continued physical therapy, and in less than 3 months, I was back at work with no restrictions. What you need to understand is that prior to seeing Dr. Hartshorn, I could not even hold a coffee cup in my left hand without serious pain. The act of threading a belt through my pant loops required assistance from my wife. Sleeping was nearly impossible and I was a wreck due to lack of sleep. Surgery takes time to fully heal from, and I knew that going in. It also takes commitment by you, to do the exercises, and range of motion stretches prescribed by your physical therapist or doctor. If you don't do that, you will not recover completely. I knew that going in as well. Dr. Hartshorn made sure I knew that this was not going to be easy, or fun, but it (the PT and stretchers) was absolutely necessary for fast recovery and the best possible outcome. Without question or reservation of any kind, I can absolutely say that if you are reading this because you have injured your shoulder, and are at the point where a solution other than you just "roughing it out" is necessary, and you have found Dr. Tim Hartshorn, Your are one fortunate individual. It is my belief that you will NOT find a better physician, surgeon or human being than Dr. Tim Hartshorn. Congratulations, and rest easy. You are in the right place. For those wondering why, 2+ years later I might be here writing a review for Dr. Hartshorn, it is really simple. I have since injured my other shoulder, and have been in the care of a doctor who was prescribed by workers comp out here in California. I am miserable, I require surgery and I decided to reach out to Dr. Hartshorn to see if he would be willing to look at my MRI and perhaps give me a recommendation for surgeons he personally knows and would comfortably recommend out here in Cali. Well, being the rock star that he is, as I mentioned in my first paragraph, Dr. Hartshorn called me directly himself. Not his staff, or some mouth piece like I would have expected to hear from out here, but he himself. I was actually not surprised to be honest, because that is the kind of doctor Tim Hartshorn is. Like I said Boston, consider yourselves VERY fortunate to have this guy in your wheel house. It does not get any better than him. I wish you well on your treatment and recovery, but have no doubt that you will be just fine. THANK YOU Dr. Hartshorn. THANK YOU.
