Having grown up in a running mecca, I have high standards for running shops. I have been to a couple other running stores in the east bay and left unimpressed (how can a store that big with that much space be THAT disorganized?!). I happened upon this matchbox of a store in Walnut Creek and was wary, but I have to say I am super impressed! Both times I've been there I've had the pleasure of working with Tim, who is knowledgable, efficient and kind. He seems to approach the experience as I would; namely, a good product at a good price. He doesn't 'upsell.' In fact today he 'downsold' and got me a fantastic deal on a new pair of shoes and shirt, both of which were on sale at a screaming discount. And despite the small size of the store, they have a lot of merchandise...more importantly it is displayed in a thoughtful, organized way that makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I'm extremely late in writing this review. My experience at AO was last August! I had a half marathon coming up in 1.5 months and the pair of running shoes I had been training in were starting to hurt my feet. Time to get a new pair, especially if I wanted to break them in before the race. I decided to atop in at AO and see what they were all about. I enjoy supporting the local businesses. I was greeted by Tim, who asked me questions about my running style, how my previous shoes had worked for me, etc. He brought out several different pairs of running shoes to try on, and allowed me to jog down the alley next to the store so he could examine the way I run. My last pair of shoes were a heavier, more solid shoe, and I expressed interest in possibly trying out a lighter shoe. I asked tim about their return policy on the shoes if they proved not to be a good fit. He said that as long as they were still in sellable condition (i.e. they were only run on a track or treadmill for a few miles), then I could bring the back. I ended up leaving with a pair of Brooks. Loe and behold, when I went to the gym the next day to try out my new running shoes, I got terrible shinsplints barely past the 1 mile mark. I came back in to AO the following day with the shoes and receipt, and was glad to see Tim working. I explained to him that the shoes gave me shinsplints and that I wanted to exchange them for a different pair. I tried on a few more pairs of shoes and ended up with the Saucony Hurricanes--coincidentally the same brand/model as the shoes I had just worn out. I never write reviews, but this place really deserves one for giving me a really great experience. The store owner, TIm, watched me jog down the alley behind the store to see what my stride looked like, and then recommended a few different shoes that would help correct the way I land (on the outside edge of my foot). I tried on several different shoes and took each of them for a test jog, and found a pair I really liked. You'll pay a little more than you would at a bigger retailer, but it's worth it. read more

They take the time to help you find the best shoe for your foot-not what is trendy. They have a generous 2 week try it out policy. This place was recommended to me by an orthopedist. Although their regular clientele is runners, I was there because of bad knees. They really do know their shoes and the service was great. I went back for a second pair (of Brooks) later. The shoes aren't cheap, but the service is great and they know how to help you find the very best pair of shoes for your needs. read more

You only have one pair of feet, so you better take care of them. I used to try and save a few bucks and go to the big chains for running shoes; not worth it. These guys are the best. Recently came back to the Athletic Outpost for a new pair of trainers. I have been made fun of by friends and family about being a shoe freak. I admit: I am picky about my shoes, twice as picky about running shoes. I was glad to find AO after few disappointing experiences with other athletic shoe stores, including New Balance SF (no longer there). I've been very happy with AO; shopping with Tim and Shannon is a treat! They have a good eye for individual needs of runners and walkers, and impressive knowledge of all things related to feet and to the sport. It's a small store, there is not a thousand pairs to look at; but the stuff they have is great and you get individual attention. There is also a parking stall in the back. I came here to buy a pair of running shoes. The staff was very helpful and knowledgable. I am extremely pleased with my new pair of shoes from them! Before, I owned a random pair of Nike shoes. Every time I ran, my arches would hurt. After coming here and trying several pairs of shoes recommended by the staff, I don't have any more pain in my feet when I run. I have wide feet, like really wide...think duck. For my whole life I have never experienced a "good pair of running shoes." I thought I had tried everything until I came across Athletic Outpost. Within minutes of looking at my old shoes (definitely bring them with you) and watching how I ran, Tim suggested I try some inserts to help offset the way my feet were positioned in the shoe. Over the last year I noticed that my new shoes were causing some pain which made running less desirable. Enough was enough and took 2 pairs of shoes with me (my favorite and the one's causing pain). I was visiting from NY and having foot pain. I Googled for an Athletic Shoe store in Walnut Creek as I wanted to get some good walking shoes. Boy, did Google hook me up! I walked in and picked up a shoe. The very friendly salesman started asking me questions. He redirected me toward an insert for my shoes, and spent the next 45 minutes trying different ones until we found the right one. He had redirected me away from a $200 shoe to a $40 insole! He was extremely knowledegable about feet. I really don't think I could have gotten better service from a podiatrist. He also told me to try them for a couple of days and if they were not helping to come back. They did help quite a bit. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

This place is the reason why you go to a physical store and buy a pair of running shoes.Sure you could read some reviews on an online website but until you try a pair of shoes on and see the difference between 5 or 6 different models- keep wasting your money. This place despite it being in the middle of downtown Walnut Creek, is more than reasonable and does not waste your money. I was surprised on the prices, and they validated my parking!. More than anything the service was phenomenal and personal. The store was busy, and its kind of small, but I was greeted and told that someone would be with me soon. Like a favorite stylist or barber I found that it was worth the wait. Shannon was friendly and interested in my athletic background and quickly had several shoes laced up and ready for my feet to test. Came here with a groupon deal and though the store is small, they stock the best items. Tim was extremely patient and nice, making sure I tried on various shoes. I bought some clothes and shoes from them and when a particular size was out of stock he ordered it for me and called me when it arrived. He also told me that they can order any shoe I am interested in, as I was interested in a tennis shoe as well.
