This place was recommended to me by an orthopedist. Although their regular clientele is runners, I was there because of bad knees. They really do know their shoes and the service was great. I went back for a second pair (of Brooks) later. The shoes aren't cheap, but the service is great and they know how to help you find the very best pair of shoes for your needs. read more

This happened a few years ago when I first started working as a server next door. I needed some comfortable shoes to work in and was searching all over the internet for shoes. I remembered this store and looked at their reviews on yelp and decided to come here. I must add that my family has owned clothing stores for 30+ years so I am very big on supporting small businesses. So I parked in their stall, and right in front of it reads "Customer parking only" which I was aware of and was warned by my coworkers not to park there because of the rude owner. However, I was a customer so I saw no problem parking there. So after I parked, I see the owner through the window and smile, then I walk next door (my work) to pick up my check and tips to spend it on shoes at this store. It took less than 5mins. I walk out and I see the owner speaking to the parking enforcement, and a $40 ticket on my dashboard. I WAS FURIOUS. On top of that, the owner was EXTREMELY RUDE, yelling at me saying that the spot is only for customers and that I need to learn how to read blah blah blah. What tops it off is that, SHE SAW ME PARK THERE AND INSTEAD OF COMING OUT AND TELLING ME NOT TO PARK THERE, SHE CALLS THE PARKING ENFORCERS! I explained myself to the parking enforcer and he actually told me that she is actually a difficult person and that she is their #1 caller, and the only way to get the ticket appealed to have her go to the office herself, in which it'll be impossible. Every time I pass by the store, I get furious and it brings me back to that day. You need to learn how to run a business. Being rude and making enemies is not the way to go. I am all for small businesses, but did not feel bad for telling a lot of people not to support this business. read more

You only have one pair of feet, so you better take care of them. I used to try and save a few bucks and go to the big chains for running shoes; not worth it. These guys are the best. Not only will you be properly fitted, but you will have the right shoe for the type of running you do. I have been going here for about five years and everyone that has helped me has been very knowledgeable about running shoes, and running in general. I am never going anywhere else. read more

Recently came back to the Athletic Outpost for a new pair of trainers. I have been made fun of by friends and family about being a shoe freak. I admit: I am picky about my shoes, twice as picky about running shoes. I was glad to find AO after few disappointing experiences with other athletic shoe stores, including New Balance SF (no longer there). I've been very happy with AO; shopping with Tim and Shannon is a treat! They have a good eye for individual needs of runners and walkers, and impressive knowledge of all things related to feet and to the sport. It's a small store, there is not a thousand pairs to look at; but the stuff they have is great and you get individual attention. There is also a parking stall in the back. I don't wanna forget to mention that great flip-flops with an arch support from Athletic Outpost. My wife say they are the best!!! read more

Shannon was very helpful today. I have purchased a few running shoes from them and I keep coming back. They are amazing there!

I came here to buy a pair of running shoes. The staff was very helpful and knowledgable. I am extremely pleased with my new pair of shoes from them! Before, I owned a random pair of Nike shoes. Every time I ran, my arches would hurt. After coming here and trying several pairs of shoes recommended by the staff, I don't have any more pain in my feet when I run. I would definitely come back here again. Plus, you get to support a local business. read more

I have now purchased running shoes there for my son, husband and myself. We all have different needs and we all wear different brands. Not only are they runners, but they are patient and I feel so lucky to have this type of store in walking distance. It doesn't matter where you are at in your running, they will find you the right shoe to make sure you can keep running comfortably! read more

The customer service at this store is amazing!! We brought out daughter in to buy her first shoes for the schools XC team!! They took time and had her try on several different types, she loves her shoes. When I needed to go back and buy racing flats the guy even offered to stay open so I could get them that night!! That is amazing service, I am a customer for life!! read more

Although I didn't buy a pair of shoes this day, Tim, the manager, spent so much time trying to fit my weird feet, even prefacing it with, I'm not sure we can find something that'll work for you, but, we'll try...and at least 1/2 hr later, after trying many pairs, we both conceded. It was a very noble attempt tho. He was so determined, and so very nice. After a multi-surgery, including bunion removal, my feet are different sized, and one is wide and looks like a duck-foot. Thank you Tim. You gave it hell ! I have recommended a couple of people to your shop since. (I live in Pleasanton, can't figure out why yelp says Hayden, although I did log in here once from there...) Max stars Athletic Outpost/Tim Ketron! read more

This place deserves every 5-star review they get. Several years ago I went in for shoes and had Shannan help me. She was patient, friendly, super informative, knowledgeable, and overall helpful in finding the PERFECT pair of shoes. Today, I went in again for shoes and found the same helpful, friendly, and kind treatment from Tim. This is by far THE best place to go in the Bay Area for shoes. read more

this is the best place for running shoes in the area. i've ran three marathons and always buy my shoes here. it's great! i would refer anyone here who is in need of new shoes. (i initially found it bc this is where my sports med doc told me to go to get the right shoes to correct my knee injury). runners - this place is for you! read more

The owners are knowledgeable and give great advice. I am just getting into running and have had fabulous experiences here. I find it so amazing how they explain why based on how I walk that one shoe will fit better than another. I keep going back! read more

This athletic shoe store is excellent. Both Tim and Shannon are very knowledgeable about the shoes and about foot problems. They take the time to help you find the best shoe for your foot-not what is trendy. They have a generous 2 week try it out policy. I would highly recommend this store over any other and anything on-line especially if you have foot issues like me. read more

I'm someone that puts in 30-40 miles of walking/hiking every week but lately I've been starting to feel some pain. I walked in and Shannan immediately noted my problem in how I was standing and feet were positioned. She suggested some shoes and soon after I walked out with new shoes that make a noticeable difference in how my feet feel. read more

This place is great. She helped me with my big feet and recommended a perfect shoe for running the hills in Oakland

Very helpful and knowledgeable about correctly fitting shoes. I will definitely be back for my next pair of shoes. We originally went for my girlfriend to get a pair of running shoes and she loved the way her new shoes felt. I was excited to let them help me choose a comfortable pair. I wear them everyday! read more

Extremely knowledgeable, they provide a proper fitting, and they stand behind each purchase. Don't make the mistake of buying running shoes online or at a "big box" store. Your feet will thank you and their prices are comparable. Highly recommended. read more

I have wide feet, like really wide...think duck. For my whole life I have never experienced a "good pair of running shoes." I thought I had tried everything until I came across Athletic Outpost. Within minutes of looking at my old shoes (definitely bring them with you) and watching how I ran, Tim suggested I try some inserts to help offset the way my feet were positioned in the shoe. Instant relief! I feel like he genuinely cared about my running experience and wasn't set on selling me the newest most expensive shoes. He gave me great advice not just on shoes and my feet but how to schedule out my runs to get optimal work out. I had such a great experience I don't think I'll go anywhere else. read more

Went back again a couple weeks ago to purchase another pair of shoes. The experience was again very good (despite having a different person helping this time). Once again we tried on a variety of shoes in order to find just the right fit. Still totally recommended. read more

Fantastic place! If you need running/walking shoes this is the place. Small but with excellent, friendly and very knowledgeable staff.

Look no further - get your shoes here. Tim, the owner, is really superior at knowing how to select the right shoe for your purpose/sport and how to determine the best fit for you. (Shannon is great too.) The reviews that say these guys are amazing are all true. My workouts are so much better since I started wearing shoes I bought here. Tim'll tell you why he's chosen the shoes he has - and then with those considerations in mind, proceed and pull a variety for you to try until you find the Right Ones. And you will. I come here from San Francisco just to get my shoes from Tim. It's worth it. read more

I've been coming here for years to get my new pairs of running shoes! The sales people here really know their stuff and have always done a great job finding the right shoe for me depending on the activities i'm participating in. I also love that they let you take a run around the block in every pair of shoes you try on to figure out if they're a good fit. Extra bonus if you're still in high school and participate in track or cross country: you get an added discount! read more

The only place I'll buy shoes anymore. I wear them about 5 days a week for almost a year. Comfort and quality is worth it. Pleasurable and easy experience. Had ankle pain before I got shoes here. Slowly pain went away. You know how good it feels to not be in pain? Priceless! read more

Just bought a pair of running shoes. The service was great! The staff is very knowledgable. The selection is not large but the quality of shoes are there. They also have Balega socks which is definitely a plus ! read more

Athletic Outpost - Shoe Stores Near Me - Walnut Creek, California

This is the place to go for running shoes, hands down. I've been buying my shoes here for over 10 years. They also helped solve an ache I had (morton's neuroma) that kept me running. They also have a great line of running clothes, too. Shannon & Tim are both knowledgable and provide superior customer service. read more

The best place to buy running shoes without a doubt. I moved to the bay area in May 08 from central Florida. There were tons of places in Florida that specialized in running. I was really happy to find this place because the employees were very serious, helpful and knowledgeable and better yet, it was 5 minutes away. I ended up buying a great pair of running shoes for a great price. read more

**Never going anywhere else, the staff is AMAZING** I've been running for the better part of 2 years but just slapped shoes on my feet. Over the last year I noticed that my new shoes were causing some pain which made running less desirable. Enough was enough and took 2 pairs of shoes with me (my favorite and the one's causing pain). Just by looking at my favorite pair, he could tell A LOT! How I run, which side I favored, why I was having issues. After about 20 minutes we narrowed the VAST selection to one pair. After a week in these new shoes, my pain was gone and my speed and distance increased back to what it was at the top of my game! I am a for life customer! read more

My first time here. Service was the best I have even received at a shoe store. The lady who helped me recommended a shoe similar to the one I had with same support. Noticed that foot was not quite right and suggested a different shoe. The first shoe felt fine but the second was better. If you have bad feet I would recommend going here read more

Athletic Outpost is the best! That is...if you want time, attention, expertise, and care. It's their passion and they are thrilled to serve you! If they don't have it in stock they will order it with no obligation to purchase...should it arrive and it doesn't make you smile. I have only purchased from Tim and he is just awesome! read more

I was visiting from NY and having foot pain. I Googled for an Athletic Shoe store in Walnut Creek as I wanted to get some good walking shoes. Boy, did Google hook me up! I walked in and picked up a shoe. The very friendly salesman started asking me questions. He redirected me toward an insert for my shoes, and spent the next 45 minutes trying different ones until we found the right one. He had redirected me away from a $200 shoe to a $40 insole! He was extremely knowledegable about feet. I really don't think I could have gotten better service from a podiatrist. He also told me to try them for a couple of days and if they were not helping to come back. They did help quite a bit. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

This place is the reason why you go to a physical store and buy a pair of running shoes.Sure you could read some reviews on an online website but until you try a pair of shoes on and see the difference between 5 or 6 different models- keep wasting your money. This place despite it being in the middle of downtown Walnut Creek, is more than reasonable and does not waste your money. I was surprised on the prices, and they validated my parking!. More than anything the service was phenomenal and personal. The store was busy, and its kind of small, but I was greeted and told that someone would be with me soon. Like a favorite stylist or barber I found that it was worth the wait. Shannon was friendly and interested in my athletic background and quickly had several shoes laced up and ready for my feet to test. I never felt hurried, it was a no pressure, try on as many as you want until you find the one you like. read more

Came here with a groupon deal and though the store is small, they stock the best items. Tim was extremely patient and nice, making sure I tried on various shoes. I bought some clothes and shoes from them and when a particular size was out of stock he ordered it for me and called me when it arrived. He also told me that they can order any shoe I am interested in, as I was interested in a tennis shoe as well. Yes, the shoes are expensive, sold at manufactures cost, but I would much rather buy a shoe that is a perfect fit and from honest people than buy it for a little discount at a superstore. read more

Don't go anywhere else! Tim is so knowledgeable and takes a personal interest . I've been going to him for years, and he always knows just what I need. Got an arch problem and use inserts, and my new shoes accommodate the inserts as well. Tim is amazing ..he gives one on one attention and takes care of your foot requirements. Price is reasonable as well.

I went here because I had heard great things about the male owner. I however encounter the woman that works there and as I had heard, she was rude, condescending, and short with me. She also had her child with her who was screaming and crying. In short I left without shoes and I won't be going back. The owner would be advised to hire new help. read more
