I really appreciate the Stanford students, staff, and physicians getting together every weekend to provide free health care to the community. I am writing on behalf of my grandparents. This review is more or less the same for the other free clinic run by Stanford Med School. My family has pretty good PPO insurance, but because my grandparents are visiting on a 6 month visa from China, our insurance doesn't cover them. Due to their various medical conditions, it was tough finding a place for them to be seen by a doctor. Arbor free clinic is absolutely free which is definitely a plus. My grandparents told me that they had a very good time here. The Stanford Physicians were very knowledge and the staff were all very war and friendly. Definitely recommended!

I trust him and trust his opinion (shout out to Doctor Kim at the Fremont Clinic, he's the GOAT). I've been to Palo Alto VA several times now and trust them unequivocally. They have a partnership with Stanford Medical, so when I go to this VA campus, it "feels" like Stanford. In other words, the bedside manner, quality of care, attention to detail, etc have all been on par with Stanford and Sutter Health (two organizations which I hold in high esteem). I've been a licensed healthcare provider myself for close to 20yrs, I have worked in medical field in some capacity non-stop since 1999, close to 30yrs now... Suffice to say, I am very vigilant and pay attention to the little things. I advocate for my own care and I hold hospitals to account when I or my family are being seen. Palo Alto VA hasn't let me down once, I've seen them for routine issues, both inpatient and outpatient. To include a surgery (hernia repair) - VA PACHS is solid. In closing - if any of my fellow veterans have had issues or poor service from other VA hospitals, VA PACHS is different. They break the mold & I firmly believe they go above & beyond to care for us. Give them a chance.

Both times were for post-surgery rehab, mainly there for PT/OT to regain her strength. I should preface that my mom is in generally good health for her age (95), no dementia, heart condition or diabetes, and did not require special meals or medication. The Vi's facility and meals are excellent- private rooms with attached full bathrooms are essential to have the proper rest for recovery. All the staff are friendly and courteous. Keep in mind that the job of a CNA is neither easy nor pleasant and we truly appreciate the level of care they treated my mom. The in-house physician, Dr. Hussain, and her assistant, Nan, were very attentive and diligent. Nan visited my mom three times a week, ordering any tests necessary, always on top of her condition and medication, and patiently addressing our concerns. A special shout out to the therapy department-all the PT, OT, and ST are highly qualified, provided the appropriate challenge and motivation for my mom's rehab which was essential for her to regain her independence. The rooms and bathrooms are always clean, no smell anywhere in the entire facility. No patients 'parked' in the hallways or nursing stations. There are plenty of activities and live performances which are shared with the Assisted Living and Memory Care residents, a bonus where the SNF, AL, and MC are physically connected. The VI SNF, as good as it is, is not the same as having your own personal helper 24/7(which some patients do hire). Patient to CNA ratio about 6:1 (I think). Some patients require 2 person-assist and some don't. The promptness of care really depending on the level of care your neighbors require. There are times when my mom rings the button for help and no one comes for a while; then there are times when 2 people come within minutes. Of course, I wish help would come within minutes every time, but with my experience visiting relatives and friends at other SNFs, this is about as good as it gets. We cannot thank all the doctors, nurses, RNAs, CNAs, therapists, activities coordinators, cleaning and kitchen staff, front desk receptionists, and administrative staff enough in helping my mom with her recovery.

What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. It's rare to find a place where excellent care, kindness, and professionalism all come together so naturally. This community exceeded our expectations in every way, and we left feeling confident, grateful, and comforted knowing that residents here are treated with dignity and heartfelt care.

Our 88-year-old mother was referred to this "beautiful" and highly recommended rehab facility in November of 2024 and spent 20 days there. It has a very low staff to patient ratio and my mother didn't get the care that she needed. She used her call button often if we weren't there with her and often needed repositioning. One of her complaints was that the call button was often placed out of her reach at nighttime. My family and I split time at the facility and were there 8-10 hours a day. We saw the doctor one time during those three weeks. It often took a number of days to get medication changed and implemented. Nurses and CNA are overworked and understaffed, therefore, toileting and dispensing medication was often late. My mother developed a horrible bed sore that we are still dealing with to this day. I'm well aware of the issues plaguing these types of facilities, but this experience was beyond disturbing. On my mother's last day there she told us about an "issue" from the night before with one of the CNAs. I immediately went to the director of nursing to inform them. The directors of nursing and administration hopped on the complaint immediately and interviewed with my mom with me present. My mother was able to articulate exactly what she told me when interviewed by the directors. I left at 3:30 PM and told the staff I would return at 5:30 PM to help her with dinner. As I was on my way back to the facility, I received a phone call that my mother was being transported to the ER on a 5150. During the course of the facility's due diligence, the Los Altos police department was called to come interview my 88-year-old bed-bound mother with no family present with her. I would have had no issue with it, save for the fact that there was no communication to the family that would happen as the outcome of the complaint, or I otherwise would not have left. My mother has always been a very timid and non-confrontational person and having two imposing men in dark uniform with guns on their belts come into her room made her anxious and frightened therefore she made some concerning statements, which is understandable. I also understand the need to 5150 someone when appropriate. The hospital never issued a 5150 and my mother's medication was changed, as needed. This change could have been done at the facility if the doctor was present half the time they said they would be and/or would have communicated with us in a timely manner. Granted, it was a blessing to get her out of there and home with us. It's unfortunate that some facilities have the reputation they do, but understaffing and lack of communication with a "non-present" doctor is the common denominator. This place was a horrible experience.

Within the last year, I have had two family members -- neither a resident of the retirement community -- spend time in that new facility. This review is about the facility, not about the retirement community as I have no experience with it -- beyond meeting many delightful residents. Everyone working at Channing House is friendly -- they do a first-rate job of hiring topnotch people, not just the kind and knowledgeable nursing staff but all the employees who work behind the scenes to keep the place humming, greet visitors, drive patients to medical appointments, and bring gourmet meals to residents. Everyone gets personal attention. Our most recent experience was with the SNF, and everyone who came to visit the patient commented on how clean and cheerful it was. I was told that many of the residents of the retirement community volunteer in the SNF -- one of the volunteers said to me "we figure we are all going to spend time here at some point, so we want to make sure it's nice!" I credit Channing House with the fact that both my family members recovered from serious health setbacks and progressed to the point that they could be discharged back home. The location -- perfect for walks (and always lots of parking) -- is a nice bonus, and let us take outings to coffee shops, the nearby park, downtown library, and even Sephora.
