A few months ago, I stayed at a hotel with VERY firm pillows. After the first night, my neck was…read morestiff...after the second night, it flat out hurt. Over the next few weeks, the pain extended down my left shoulder blade, then through my tricep all the way down to my hand. It eventually got to where a sudden turn of the head, a cough, a sneeze, or even a small laugh would cause excruciating pane. Clearly I had a pinched nerve - I made an appointment with a spine specialist at Stanford. She agreed, and suggested I try PT. My first three weeks of PT were elsewhere....and a complete waste of time. I decided to give Stanford a chance, and made an appointment. After arriving, I had a 20 minute conversation with two therapists....who left the room, discussed, came back in, and told me in no uncertain terms what my issue was, and more importantly, how to resolve it. They walked me through a few exercises, and told me to do them religiously (now, keep in mind, at this point, we're talking over four months of incredible pain). TWO DAYS after doing the suggested exercises, my pain was almost to zero. A week later (and to date), I have a slightly sore neck, but that's it. DEFINITELY worth the pain of travel and trying to find parking during their construction project. Can't recommend them enough..

Terrible communication, unprofessional & mismanaged care…read more !!!!I would leave negative stars if I could!!!! (never left a bad review before) My complaint is not about my actual surgery from Dr. Freehill, but the office's failure to handle routine paperwork and their total disrespect in their absence of communication. I had surgery 6 weeks ago and still have not had my EDD paperwork signed off. I call the office every 2-3 days since my surgery to try and get this. All I am ever told is my message is being flagged as urgent and they will forward it to the clerical team. It took more than 3 weeks for my work disability paperwork to be completed, and when it was finally submitted, it was incomplete and unsigned. My EDD certification is still unresolved six weeks later. I have been unable to receive my disability benefits and my leave of absence was not approved until more than a month after my surgery. I have repeatedly contacted the office, escalated the matter through Guest Services multiple times, and continued to follow up in good faith. The lack of communication and administrative follow-through and negligence is unacceptable. I never wanted to escalate to this level, but, I am stupefied that a reputable institution such as Stanford could allow such a straightforward administrative task to be handled with this degree of mismanagement, negligence, lack of communication, and disregard for the patient.

I saw Dr. Fanton after my knee got totally messed up by my first doctor who did two knee surgeries…read moreon me (ACL reconstruction & scope). He did the third of the five knee surgeries on my right knee (another scope, to clean out scar tissue). For a standard surgery (like ACL reconstruction), I think Dr. Fanton is great. However, I was a special case with special needs and problems. I found myself very frustrated that it'd take me up to TWO months to get a follow-up visit, that I would be seen by some resident first (different every time - which is the nature of a teaching hospital, which I understand), and that Dr. Fanton would only come in and see me for like 2 minutes at each visit. Basically, you become one of those barcodes that get stapled to your forehead like in those old Washington Mutual commercials. So if you're ok with long wait times for appointments and don't need special care from your doctor, Dr. Fanton will do a great job fixing you. However, if you are like me who have special circumstances and need special care, then I recommend Palo Alto Medical Foundation, where they focus on patient care (which is where I went after Dr. Fanton, and absolutely loved).

Dr. Fanton is Awesome! I've had surgery on my shoulder three times, the last by Dr. Fanton. I tore…read moreevery ligament in my shoulder -- the one holding your arm into the socket, and the ones connecting your shoulder blade to your collar bone. The first doctor didn't know what he was doing and shaved off the end of my collar bone. The second doctor reconnected the arm to the socket, but that wasn't the main problem. Dr. Fanton did the big job of reconnecting the blade to the collar bone, and in only 1 month my mobility is really good and I'm ready to start physical therapy. I saw another doctor before Dr. Fanton, for the same issue, and expressed to the doctor how important having the surgery site look good was -- I wanted minimal scarring. The doctor ridiculed me and told me "if you don't have any more important questions, I have somewhere to be"! After that I asked my GP to recommend a non-chauvinistic doctor, and he recommended Dr. Fanton. Dr. Fanton was super considerate and really listened to me. When I had my stitches removed he said "oh, by the way, we did internal stitches and made a real effort to make the incision as small as possible." The scar is small and really really clean, I bet in a year you won't even be able to see it! Fantastic job, and I'll update after physical therapy to let you know how the overall reconstruction went!

While ice skating I tore off ACL and PCL in my left knee. Instead of having to wait months and do…read moretwo separate surgeries, Dr. Laurel Mines of Bay Laurel Athletics used physical therapy to quickly reduce the pain and start healing. I didn't have to do the surgery and I can walk up and down stairs. I had never tried physical therapy before, so I really needed someone patient to explain and show me exactly what to do. After I had such fast results my husband went to Dr. Laurel Mines when he needed to recover from hip surgery. So she knows how to heal sports injuries and can get you off of pain killers after surgery by getting rid of knee or hip pain. I trust Dr. Laurel Mines because she knows what she is doing, is able to show you exactly what to do, and gets results to get rid of pain so you can heal faster. If you have a weird injury don't wait because delay doesn't get you well but starting with this doctor gets rid of pain fast. Highest quality care, pleasant to deal with, patient at explaining things. Her work at Stanford prepared her to run her own business. Yes, I would refer my family and friends to Dr. Laurel Mines of Bay Laurel Athletics for medical care and performance training.

Speaking of the space - it is within a dynamic gym where there are athletes of all ages working out, rehabbing and socializing while good music plays. Laurel made us feel comfortable, especially our son who is quite nervous about his surgery. She made sure to focus on his physical recovery and also his mental health as he prepares for a long recovery. She gave practical recommendations based on the tests she did and had advanced knowledge of his specific needs and best practices. My son felt motivated when we left to do what he needs to do to prepare for surgery. I definitely recommend Bay Laurel's practice.

An Outstanding Orthopedic Surgeon…read more I want to share my experience with an exceptional orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Roth, because finding a surgeon you truly trust makes such a difference. I was in an accident while riding an e-bike that resulted in a broken clavicle. I ultimately had surgery on July 27th, and I couldn't be happier with my experience and recovery. From my very first appointment, Dr. Roth took the time to sit down with me and explain everything clearly. He also spoke with me again immediately before surgery, going over what he was going to do and what I could expect during recovery. I really appreciated that time and personal attention. I've had other surgeries where the surgeon didn't speak with me beforehand, leaving me feeling uncertain about what was going to happen or what recovery would look like. Dr. Roth made sure I felt informed and comfortable every step of the way. My recovery has been going extremely well, and I recently had a follow-up appointment with May Shah, PA-C, at Dr. Roth's office. She was equally informative, professional, and kind. My incision looks great, and considering the circumstances of my accident, I truly couldn't be happier with the outcome. If you're looking for an orthopedic surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Kevin Roth. I'm very grateful to have been in his care! Dublin Office: (510) 498-2086 Palo Alto Office: (650) 853-2943

Dr. Roth's website was also incredibly helpful, with clear info for pre- and post-surgery which equips patients with knowledge and stay informed to fast track the recovery! Courteous, good bedside manners, empathetic, and most importantly, experienced. I've also found Dr Dragoo's medical assistant, Andrea, to be kind and very helpful as well. It's a bit unnerving to have one, two, sometimes as many as four fellows/residents/visiting doctors in the examining room at the same time, but they've never been anything but quiet and professional. Although all four sports medicine orthopedists (Dragoo, Safran, McAdams, Fanton) can treat all your joint ailments, they do sub-specialize a bit (i.e. Dragoo for knees, Safran for hips, McAdams and Fanton for shoulders and elbows). Dr Dragoo is a top-notch knee guy, and the only diagnostician amongst ~10 local orthopedists to really recognize the root of what was causing my symptoms. Be aware appointment slots are limited, as Dr Dragoo only holds clinic two days a week, so schedule a visit ASAP (you can always re-schedule or cancel if need be). Dr Dragoo currently has clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, operating on Mondays and Thursdays. I've appreciated the timely phone/email responses from Dr Dragoo's fellows and Andrea in between office consultations.

I had an arthroscopic reconstructive shoulder surgery back in 2009. I had one fully torn ligament…read moreand 3 partially torn ligaments. The condition was further complicated by the fact the injury took place 20 years earlier. Thus the ligament has atrophied and a significant amount of calcification has grown in place of the main injury. The reason I waited 20 years was primarily due to the fact that at the time of the injury, the surgeon required open surgery. Over the years, I saw more orthopedic surgeons and each confirmed that an open surgery is required to resolve the torn ligaments. Since the injury persistently flared up and caused minor and major irritations, I kept on seeing new orthopedics every few years. Luckily, I happen to come across Dr. McAdams who reviewed the old MRIs and ordered new MRI scan. He assured me that he can remedy the 4 ligaments arthroscopically. I'm am extremely fortunate to have met him and agreed to the surgery. Ever since then, the should has been great. Motions that I have long given up on became commonplace after the surgery. I highly recommend Dr. McAdams. I do not believe any doctor could've fixed my shoulder as good as he did.

I recently had an MRI that showed a tear in my shoulder. I made an appointment to see Dr. McAdams,…read morehe looked at the MRI, did some tests, and told me to schedule surgery. Thankfully, I got a second opinion. The second surgeon gave me a cortisone shot because she wasn't convinced the tear was the cause of my symptoms and that I should wait to see how my shoulder reacts to the shot before rushing into surgery. Fast forward a couple of months, and my pain is 90% better and improving slowly over time. If I didn't get a second opinion, I may have had an unnecessary surgery to fix something that wasn't giving me any serious problems. Dr. McAdams needs to realize that for most people, surgery should be the last option, not the first.
