Each time we have visited, we've been very impressed with Dr Roh and his staff. We primarily deal with knee injuries and we found him to be very highly skilled, very thorough, knowledgeable, and patient. He explains everything very well, explaining the different treatment options and helping us make the right decisions. He often mentors Residents and Fellows who also may examine you, and we have observed he's very patient with them, and explains details well. We get knee injections and we always feel a big difference afterwards. We really appreciate how accommodating Dr Roh and his staff is, especially EMELY who has been so helpful to schedule our appointments on the same day as we travel four hours away to come to this clinic. They both have been very accommodating adjusting their schedule to help fit us in. So we really appreciate Dr Roh and Emely and all of the staff and we know that we need more doctors like him.

After injuring my knee in a fall, I was referred by the Stanford ER to the Stanford Sports Medicine…read moreClinic. At my initial visit, Dr. Roh did not propose any treatment until I specifically asked whether surgery might be necessary--prompted by my chiropractor's advice that an MRI was needed to assess the damage. Only then did Dr. Roh order the MRI. He mentioned he would be on vacation but said someone from the office would follow up once the results were available. When the MRI results came in, Dr. Moth called and informed me I had a partial quadriceps tendon tear. Without physically examining my knee, she recommended a wait-and-see approach and scheduled a follow-up with Dr. Roh. However, I had noticed a gap across my knee, which I suspected was from the tendon tear. ChatGPT had indicated that tears involving more than 50% of the tendon typically require surgery, so I was doubtful that rest and physical therapy alone would be sufficient. Seeking a second opinion, I visited an orthopedic surgeon in San Jose a few days later. He physically examined my knee and confirmed that surgery was necessary. I eventually underwent surgery nearly two months after the injury. The surgeon confirmed the tendon was fully torn, with only the bottom portion still attached. I do not believe the Stanford Sports Medicine Clinic provided adequate care for my injury. Once the MRI results were available, a proper in-person examination should have been done to make an accurate diagnosis. The delay caused by their advice resulted in lost time and potentially worsened my condition.

I saw Dr. Fanton after my knee got totally messed up by my first doctor who did two knee surgeries…read moreon me (ACL reconstruction & scope). He did the third of the five knee surgeries on my right knee (another scope, to clean out scar tissue). For a standard surgery (like ACL reconstruction), I think Dr. Fanton is great. However, I was a special case with special needs and problems. I found myself very frustrated that it'd take me up to TWO months to get a follow-up visit, that I would be seen by some resident first (different every time - which is the nature of a teaching hospital, which I understand), and that Dr. Fanton would only come in and see me for like 2 minutes at each visit. Basically, you become one of those barcodes that get stapled to your forehead like in those old Washington Mutual commercials. So if you're ok with long wait times for appointments and don't need special care from your doctor, Dr. Fanton will do a great job fixing you. However, if you are like me who have special circumstances and need special care, then I recommend Palo Alto Medical Foundation, where they focus on patient care (which is where I went after Dr. Fanton, and absolutely loved).

I tore…read moreevery ligament in my shoulder -- the one holding your arm into the socket, and the ones connecting your shoulder blade to your collar bone. The first doctor didn't know what he was doing and shaved off the end of my collar bone. The second doctor reconnected the arm to the socket, but that wasn't the main problem. Dr. Fanton did the big job of reconnecting the blade to the collar bone, and in only 1 month my mobility is really good and I'm ready to start physical therapy. I saw another doctor before Dr. Fanton, for the same issue, and expressed to the doctor how important having the surgery site look good was -- I wanted minimal scarring. The doctor ridiculed me and told me "if you don't have any more important questions, I have somewhere to be"! After that I asked my GP to recommend a non-chauvinistic doctor, and he recommended Dr. Fanton. Dr. Fanton was super considerate and really listened to me. When I had my stitches removed he said "oh, by the way, we did internal stitches and made a real effort to make the incision as small as possible." The scar is small and really really clean, I bet in a year you won't even be able to see it! Fantastic job, and I'll update after physical therapy to let you know how the overall reconstruction went!

Courteous, good bedside manners, empathetic, and most importantly, experienced. I've also found Dr Dragoo's medical assistant, Andrea, to be kind and very helpful as well. It's a bit unnerving to have one, two, sometimes as many as four fellows/residents/visiting doctors in the examining room at the same time, but they've never been anything but quiet and professional. Although all four sports medicine orthopedists (Dragoo, Safran, McAdams, Fanton) can treat all your joint ailments, they do sub-specialize a bit (i.e. Dragoo for knees, Safran for hips, McAdams and Fanton for shoulders and elbows). Dr Dragoo is a top-notch knee guy, and the only diagnostician amongst ~10 local orthopedists to really recognize the root of what was causing my symptoms. Be aware appointment slots are limited, as Dr Dragoo only holds clinic two days a week, so schedule a visit ASAP (you can always re-schedule or cancel if need be). Dr Dragoo currently has clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, operating on Mondays and Thursdays. I've appreciated the timely phone/email responses from Dr Dragoo's fellows and Andrea in between office consultations.

I had an arthroscopic reconstructive shoulder surgery back in 2009. I had one fully torn ligament…read moreand 3 partially torn ligaments. The condition was further complicated by the fact the injury took place 20 years earlier. Thus the ligament has atrophied and a significant amount of calcification has grown in place of the main injury. The reason I waited 20 years was primarily due to the fact that at the time of the injury, the surgeon required open surgery. Over the years, I saw more orthopedic surgeons and each confirmed that an open surgery is required to resolve the torn ligaments. Since the injury persistently flared up and caused minor and major irritations, I kept on seeing new orthopedics every few years. Luckily, I happen to come across Dr. McAdams who reviewed the old MRIs and ordered new MRI scan. He assured me that he can remedy the 4 ligaments arthroscopically. I'm am extremely fortunate to have met him and agreed to the surgery. Ever since then, the should has been great. Motions that I have long given up on became commonplace after the surgery. I highly recommend Dr. McAdams. I do not believe any doctor could've fixed my shoulder as good as he did.

I recently had an MRI that showed a tear in my shoulder. I made an appointment to see Dr. McAdams,…read morehe looked at the MRI, did some tests, and told me to schedule surgery. Thankfully, I got a second opinion. The second surgeon gave me a cortisone shot because she wasn't convinced the tear was the cause of my symptoms and that I should wait to see how my shoulder reacts to the shot before rushing into surgery. Fast forward a couple of months, and my pain is 90% better and improving slowly over time. If I didn't get a second opinion, I may have had an unnecessary surgery to fix something that wasn't giving me any serious problems. Dr. McAdams needs to realize that for most people, surgery should be the last option, not the first.

At my first appointment, he lectured me on his relationship with his nurse of 20 years. First words out of his mouth. I had said nothing about his nurse who had just showed me to his office and had spoken to me when I made the appointment. He glanced at my knees, which is why I was there, and said nothing. I had x rays taken on my own which showed arthritis near the knee cap. I explained to him a previously seen doctor had removed arthritis 5 years ago and all pain disappeared. He told me to ride an exercise bike and he left the room. I tried riding the exercise bike but the pain continued. He was very angry when I returned for a follow up visit.
