We ordered 2 Gryo Meals (includes fries & a drink). The Gryo meat with Lettuce, Onion, Tomato and tzatziki sauce is always so fresh & fries are always phenomenal! We also got a bag of pita bread, Garlic Hummus and Tabbouleh. I love getting their garlic hummus and using it as a veggie dip. Service is always fast and the kitchen staff is also very nice. The interior could use some new paint, a good cleaning & some updated decor but we usually order our food to go so it is not really too much of an issue. Athen's Cafe has been around for decades, but frankly, it looks like it's been around since "The Odyssey" was written in the seventh century, BC by that Homer guy (the one before Homer Simpson). Or perhaps that was when they last remodeled the place and it was opened even earlier. I have to get this part out of the way first: This is the saddest, least appealing restaurant interior that I've ever seen in the United States. The food photos on the wall are old and faded and the prices were removed years ago. I don't even WANT to know what the kitchen looks like. Athen's has no website. It's page on Facebook contains a menu from 2013 and the "Daily Specials" board in the restaurant has not changed since the Vietnam War ended. Also, this will be a bit tricky to find the first time you go. It's address is West Broadway in Robbinsdale, but you have to go to the BACK of the two-sided mall because it's facing Bottineau Blvd (which has way too many vowels) and it's off 41st Avenue. It could be a CIA front, but that's just a guess. OK. Let's move on. What propels this place from a one-star to a four-star rating is that the food is consistently excellent, the portion quantity is huge, and the prices are low. The gyros are excellent and the hummus is five-star quality. The salads have fresh lettuce and I appreciate the variety and freshness of veggies they include, even though it's a side-salad. The pita bread is soft and fresh. I have ordered the combo meals and they can easily feed three people. I advise you to order light because the quantities are surprisingly large. So despite what this place looks like (and what the FDA might find), the food really is good and I've never had any issues with it. If your partner is a clean-freak, I recommend take-out! In fact, if you were having a party, this food would be a great choice because it's actually plated very well. I have been coming to Athens frequently for at least 20 years, and do highly recommend it. I wish instead of a tip jar, they had a remodeling jar. I definitely would contribute to that. read more

I frequent Athens Cafe to get the gyro lunch combo. I haven't tried much else, but the gyro combo is a large amount of food for $13. Sometimes I'll get half rice, half hummus to go with the lamb and chicken that comes with. The side salad, pita and a drink also come with the combo meal. The chicken and lamb are great, the rice is a little on the dry side but still good. The pita is fairly thin and can end up breaking if you put too much in. Service is good, I think the owner recognizes me and is prompt on preparing my to-go order. Ambiance is what I would expect, although the restaurant is not up to date, it's fine to stop in and eat at a table. Yum yum yum. This is my favorite place to get Greek in the cities. It's a total hole in the wall, inside an old business strip type building. All of the employees are flirty and effortlessly kind in that hallmark Mediterranean way - it's my FAVORITE! The gyro is phenomenal. The stuffed grape leaves are okay, but I've got high standards for those. Truthfully, the best stuffed grape leaves you'll find are Holy Land ones - get them at Whole Foods or go to Holy Land in Minneapolis. I have yet to go, but have never been disappointed by their food. The beef was probably my favorite and I really liked the chicken too. And the grilled onions! Yes please! The Greek salad was good-I would have liked more olives and I love olives so there are never enough. My husband loved the falafel and I didn't. Hummus was super duper creamy! So creamy-yummy! The Mediterranean Platter for 4 (hint - it serves six easily - especially when you order a side of the great pita chips) is a terrific combination of all things good about Greek food. This place is a great ratio of good food for a good price. We both got gyro combos. Mine was with fries and my partner's was with rice. Both sides were great. We also got some hummus too in the side and it has a good fresh taste and was probably better than the Big Dog hummus maker in town. Both combos came with a bit side salad with tasty dressing and components. The meat itself tasted fresh and what I would expect. The beef gyro tasted like the sort of beef gyro you'd get anywhere, which is good in my book. It also came with a curried chicken gyro type meat too that was unique and worth getting. Been here twice now. Family orders both times.Ordered the chicken gyros platter for four of us last time. The food was so much and it was real. It was fresh. The chicken is real chicken cooked on a grill and seasoned in I think cumin and mild spices. Tasty. Really tasty. This time I ordered the same plus a lamb and chicken combo. Again very yummy. I also got more hummos than before because it tastes so fresh. I even liked their salad W feta, cucumbers. Flavorful. That 8.99 platter can easily feed two. We just ordered in to go boxes so we would have extra for tomorrow. Hope people check it out. It's close to North Memorial, I have to swing by there every so often. I've been living in Robbinsdale for 9 years, and I just recently discovered Athens Cafe. Their food isn't just good, it's fantastic - merging Greek cuisine with Lebanese food is pure genius! The place isn't much to look at - but the food makes up for it! Tucked inside the plaza, it's not easy to see from the outside, but judging by the line of people waiting, it's always worth the wait. My favorites are the Tabbouleh (better than my grandma's), the artichoke and spinach hummus, the flat bread and the spinach pies. SO much food for about $20 - enough to feed me and my partner. I've also tried the gyros and several of the specials, everything they serve is excellent! The guy behind the counter is so efficient and friendly - not sure if he owns the place, but he acts as if he does by giving such amazing service. When your to-go food is ready, he actually brings it out to you instead of calling your name or putting it on a board. I recommend everything on the menu! read more

I avoided this place for years after being put off just by peeping through the windows. For some reason, the girlfriend and I finally chose to give it a go. This is easily the most beat up and dirty restaurant I have even been inside. And I am one to frequent dive spots! I can totally forgive the worn cosmetics, but the grime was palpable, and everywhere. The inside of the cold case from which they sell pastry and dips was nasty and full of old food bits. The glass seemed dirty inside and out. Behind the counter there was visible dust/grease clumps on shelf tops, the menu board, and everywhere really. Ceiling was filthy. With all of that hanging around you just know it ends up in the food. The woman at the counter was filling little cups with salad dressing on a counter that was clearly not for food prep, and also under an area saturated with the suspended greasy dirtbombs. No gloves, or any signs of food safety concerns. Speaking of the help, this individual seemed pretty uninterested in being there, but powered through several phone orders and difficult walk up customers reasonably well, while visibly giving no fu*ks. To her credit, when filling a to go order for tabouleh, she grabbed a tub from the sketchy cooler, looked at it, made a face, and grabbed a different one after throwing the offensive one on the back counter. I assume she found a past date package, and am glad for that customer that she noticed and gave him a fresher one. We both got chicken platters that included chicken gyro, chicken kebab, rice, pita and house salad. We should have chosen more variety, but our moods were the same that night. The house salad was very enjoyable. Veggies fresh, dressing tasty. A little skeeved out by knowing the dressing cup was likely portioned out by a cranky counter person with no food safety training, and might also contain bits of grunge that had plummeted from basically anywhere above, but whatever. The rice was totally fine. The decent sized portion had some flavor, but was not too salty or oily, and was well cooked. Both the chicken gyro and kebab were super dried out, and were pretty basic in taste. Generic yellow curry powder seemed to be the only real seasoning. Again the portion was good, but it was just so dry and chewy. The pita seemed like packaged food service stuff, but was fresh. If they power washed the interior of the place, and kept it clean, I might consider going back to see if there was something else I enjoyed, or even to see if the chicken is not always so dried out. However the meal was just not strong enough to overcome the dirtiness and feeling that what you cannot see is far worse than what you can see. read more

Solid hole in the wall at a strip mall, some hits and some misses average to a 3 star rating. Tried a gyro/curry chicken combo with hummus and the kofta plate with fries. Both combos are served with salad. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, moist and deserves at least 4/5 stars. The gyro meat was average and a bit on the greasy side. Hummus was okay, slightly below average. As a reference point, Merhaba is the gold standard for hummus based on our palettes. Most disappointing was the kofta. It was overly dry, no seasoning and tasted like burned hamburgers. Fries are average. Overall, some good options if you're in the neighborhood but not worth an intentional drive. read more

Great fresh gyros. That's all you need to know. I prefer the sauce on the side with no onions but you know, whatever floats your boat. A little birdie told me that I was able to get the kids meal version of the gyro too, which offers the same amount of fries and a bit less meat but I mean if your a small eater like me, this is more than enough food. Plus you can't beat paying $2 less than regular for it. If you want to be adventurous and have a little bit more for your buck, get the gyro value combo.
