Ordered traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. Food was good, nothing special but the service was definitely lacking. Our server was more interested in talking with his co-workers than checking on customers. If I'm ever in the area I would probably give them another try. read more

We did Sunday brunch here and ordered off the menu. Waitress was sweet but messed up our order pretty good (his eggs on my plate and my bread on his) but we fixed it simple enough. Food was ok; chicken fried steak was mostly breading. Was patiently waiting in line to pay when a lady cut in line ahead of us....hate it when people assume THEIR time is more important then mine. read more

Delicious salsa, rolls and CFS dinner. Comfortable setting. Service was a little bare. My pet peeve is sweeping up near my table while I'm eating, but to make matters worse mopping with strongly scented disinfectant so near that is all I smell and taste. read more

I'm in the area for work and we usually like to try local restaurants. We decided on this because it was local and close to where we were working. The interior is really spread out so we had a hard time getting the attention of our waitress. The food was okay but the temperature of each item on my plate varied widely, a sign of a disorganized kitchen. The marinade on my chicken was pretty good, I just wish it wasn't flattened to heck and almost cold. As we left, we saw the majority of their awards were for their breakfast so maybe we need to try that instead. Not impressed with lunch. read more

I've been a Dallas mexican food diner for years, but not too impressed with this dull interior, 'dive'. Food is mediocre at best. Decent, but don't go in expecting much. Their name should be "Athens Mexican Cafe" with more than half the menu being mexican food. read more

My kid LOVED this place. The chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, and green beans were great. My dinner - taco salad - was a little salty but very good. Prices were great, and service very quick and courteous. Definitely will go back!!! read more

The quality of the food seems to be in decline and there is some issue about the management's integrity. This restaurant was a mainstay in Athens, TX for some time. They have several awards on the wall which were well-deserved. However, my last few visits haven't been so good - the food is getting bland and the service spotty. I dared to try it once more when they showed up on groupon with a restaurant.com deal. They refused to honor it. I think they are falling into decline and would recommend staying away. Having moved to Athens a bit less than a year ago, Athens Cafe has been a regular go-to place for probably the best Sunday Morning breakfast venues in town. The food is good and while the atmosphere is neither cozy nor posh, it certainly is not unattractive -- always clean and uncluttered. We highly recommend the Sunday buffet, well stocked with a variety of meats, misc Mexican dishes, fruits, biscuits and gravy -- and the best treat, wonderful omelets prepared by an on-duty chef right at the buffet bar -- allow about 3-5 minutes for your omelet so get a plate of goodies and indulge while not forgetting to go back and pick up your wonderful made-to-order omelet. We occasionally go there for dinner or lunch as well. Their generous supply of salsa and chips is a great way to sit and relax while waiting on your favorite Mexican fare or that chicken-friend steak. A good variety of menu items available, we've never gotten a bad meal there, though admittedly there has been a variance in our experiences over the course of repeated visits. read more

I should have looked up this restaurant before going. I ordered enchiladas with green chili and they put hormel chili on my enchilada. The inside was very dry and I had to put the salsa from my chips inside to make it palatable. The green beans were soggy and the strawberries were strawberry pie filling. Hubby ordered chicken fried steak and it was extremely tough and very hard to chew. I would not recommend eating here if you are in town. read more

We were just passing through Athens at lunch time and searched Yelp for some recommendations. We chose the cafe because it was close to downtown and had good reviews. At first we were concerned that there were few customers. But as soon as we sat down and began eating the free chips & salsa, our fears were relieved. We wanted a light lunch. Athens Cafe serves the best Mexican food. The servers are always friendly and accommodating. If you stop in on either a Saturday or Sunday morning, be sure to take advantage of their fully loaded buffet. I also recommend their daily specials. read more

This is our go to cafe for Mexican food. Best fajitas and Sunday breakfast in town. Priced reasonably. Excellent salsa.

Stopped here driving the back roads to Shreveport. We ordered a plate lunch of roast beef with veggies. Do NOT order the roast beef. It was stringy, tasted like it was a packaged deal that was warmed up, the gravy was out of a can, not a gravy made from the juices of a nice cooked roast. The potatoes tasted instant but the other vegetables were ok. Ask them to put your salad dressing on the side of you'll get at least a half cup of dressing drowning you lettuce. The reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because I think we ordered the wrong thing. I think they may have pretty good Mexican food. They serve salsa and chips with each meal and the salsa was very good and fresh, homemade tasting. So don't give up on them, just don't order the roast beef. read more

We were the only patrons on a Saturday evening in the large restaurant. Service wasn't good as the staff seemed preoccupied with texting or watching other folks in the parking lot. The food was average frozen fare. It was the only restaurant listed as open and serving American food so we tried it. Instead it seems to be mainly a Mexican restaurant. read more
