Robert is not only very thorough in his inspections, he's also extremely courteous and punctual with his reports. We called him on a Sunday with a very tight deadline and he was eager to get to the property and provide us with a detailed report (photos included) within hours of the inspection. As we were making amendments to our home contract (based on the report), he was available to answer our questions and explain exactly what it was we needed to ask for. Not only does Robert look in every nook and cranny, he also uses that newfangled thermal imaging thing that other places charge $200-400 extra for. With it, he found that there was insulation missing behind a firewall in the attic. An honest mistake by the contractors, but one that would've resulted in a hotter summer in the master bedroom. ATEX Inspects is one of those local businesses that you only hear about through great word of mouth and I'm really glad we were lucky enough to get a referral. The inspections are carried out by the owner, Robert, and he does a great job during the walkthrough of identifying problems and explaining how to fix them. He also goes into a lot of detail about basic home maintenance and offers suggestions about little improvements that could be made, though not technically necessary/problematic. On our first inspection, he saved us a huge mistake on a house we loved by finding cracks in the foundation (our inspection on our next home went much smoother). Their rates are very reasonable compared to a lot of the other companies in the area and, if a deal breaker is found in your first home inspection, they offer a discount if you use them again for your next inspection...which kinda helps with the sting of having to go thru the buying process on a second house. As for customer service, Robert set up our appointment himself, just a few hours after we emailed him thru his website, which, to be honest, is not nearly as flashy as his competitors...but that kinda sums up ATEX Inspects. Ive lived at my home for 5 months now and everything that he inspected was terrible, still. The gentleman that inspected my home was Robert Welch. All he did was check everything with deficiencies and put an excuse in each box saying that he was unable to reach certain areas because of obstructions and things like that. Even though, as inexperienced as I am, I was able to get up in my attic and move around just fine. There were no obstructions and I was able to take pictures of every little thing up in that attic without having a problem and without having to move anything around. It was not obstructed at all. Every single contractor I've had come out to the home has apologized to me because my inspector didn't do his job correctly. When I'm having friends, family, coworkers, lawyers, Realtors, and everyone else that I know that owns a home telling me that the inspection was what screwed me over on this house....its terrible. now, I'm out of pocket for everything. entire inspection report is bare minimum and is extremely unacceptable. I've complained about this before and his unprofessional response was pathetic. I have the entire inspection report I'd be willing to show publicly if you're unsure. He also pressures whoever he inspects to go on right then and there and leave a 5-star review for him and I believe that he does that because he knows that once you move into the home or once months go by and you realize that he didn't really do a good job that you've already given him a 5-star review and it's bullshit. I've asked him to rectify the situation or at the very least give me my money back so I can go and get the things fixed that he did not inspect properly and all he did was talk trash to me and try to belittle me and belittle my review. Had my inspection been extremely thorough, I could have made an educated decision on this home. However, the things he mentioned were small things that could be fixed. Turns out that was just a cover up for the big things. For example, he says that he could not move around the attic because it was obstructed and because of the insulation. I have pictures which I will put on here of my attic and I was able to get up there and take pictures of the entire AC unit all the way around it just by taking a few steps forward he did not even enter the attic he took two photos of my attic from the stairs and tried to say that he could not access it I've had two 350 lb men up in my attic who were able to access it just fine. So tell me, why would you tell somebody and right on a report that you could not access something when other people that are bigger than you are able to access it just fine? My problem now being that since he didn't point out those issues I'm finding out that my AC/heating unit was improperly installed UNSAFELY. so, my home warranty won't cover it and contractors are telling me that I need an entirely new heating unit. When I took photos all the wiring and everything is just hanging out of the boxes which you could have seen if you just stepped into the Attic. That's just one example of the many things that I found to be inaccurate on the report. In my personal opinion, I think that inspectors like this mark down as deficiencies and then write that they couldn't access it as a loophole to get around the system so that way they can do the bare minimum and you can't take them to court.. My realtor was here with me when he did the inspection so she is my witness. All I can say is that if you choose this gentleman to inspect your home you better walk in every room with him, walking every area with him, watch him like a hawk, and I highly recommend recording the entire thing so that way later on when something goes wrong you have that video documentation and visual proof of what exactly he did. I'm going to small claims court unless my $ is returned. I'm already taking the seller to court for lying on the seller's disclosure form but according to my lawyer the inspector needs to be held accountable as well because it's their job to warn me about things before I purchase a home and since I was not warned about these things and these things were not pointed out to me.... I bought a home under false pretenses which is causing a lot of trouble now. I'm more upset that I have a 1 year old son and an 85 year old veteran grandfather that I'm a caretaker for and and they are suffering because of this money pit that I could have been warned about. And mr. Robert Welch unless you're going to give me my money back I really don't need an unprofessional response to my review because you've already done that on the last review that I left and I'm just updating it to include all of the new information that I have. read more

Robert came out to inspect our new home in Pearland in March 2012. I found him online via his website after a google search and I felt confident enough to hire him. Robert was very thorough and performed an inspection all over the inside and outside of the home and allowed me (the prospective buyer) to walk through with him. He showed me all the nooks and crannies of my new home, and told me so many things I would never have known to look for or find in the home. This was my first home so I had never done this before. The entire inspection lasted at least 2 hours, maybe more. Robert's report was very detailed with pictures and I was able to send that right over to the builder and they acknowledged all of the items and were able to fix them prior to closing. Robert did such a great job that I hired him again in March 2014 for my 2 year checkup and he did the same thing again, pointing out things I didnt even notice myself after living in the home for nearly 2 years. I performed the walkthrough with him again and he was just as detailed as the 1st time. One thing he noticed was a crack in a large livingroom window on the 2nd floor and the builder replaced it free of charge; that repair saved me hundreds of dollars alone. I again was able to send the report to the builder and they fixed everything as part of their 2 year full warranty. We hired Robert to do a commercial property inspection. Our experience was bad. Report had no substance to it. Property being old we were concerned about hvac, plumbing,electrical in his report Robert didn't even mention about these. Report was like 40 pages out of 40 pages 30 were just the exact copy of the report he initially shared with us for an example as a reference.Report was very sloppy. Will not use this inspector again. ATEX came out and inspected our house for a buyer. He was pretty quick, although he was really weird towards me (the owner) when I came home. He found some little things that we didn't even know about, including thermal seals on three panes (the mist was so subtle on two of them that we needed a flashlight and magnifier to find it!) and a smoke detector that wasn't working right. That was cool. I appreciate thoroughness. My problem was that he apparently felt some bizarre need to trump up non-issues. I guess maybe if you don't find something scary enough for the buyer to justify your presence, you haven't earned your keep? High-security thick strikeplates specifically designed to make the deadbolt secure and make kick-in difficult was noted as a defect. Of course the door lock is tight (duh, that's the point), but there was no problem with the gap or the alignment. The door opens and closes easily with no rubbing, perfectly plumb, etc. That was just annoying, not really a big deal. Secondly, there were hairline settling cracks in our concrete slab. Like 4 of them, somewhere in the vicinity of 1/64" to 1/32" wide. I wish I could post pictures of these scary, scary grand canyon cracks in our foundation. The foundation company laughed when they saw the situation, as a crack less than 1/8" wide is considered normal settling - especially when the structure shows no signs of shifting, twisting, wall cracks, unlevel floors, sagging, (inside or out) or dirt disturbance. The number of settlement cracks was actually remarkably small. (I guess Centex pours a good foundation, even if they put in cheap thermal windows?) Of course, I didn't find the added stress of a completely unnecessary call to foundation people on a 5 year old house funny at all. That was some complete BS. If I was the buyer, I don't know that I would appreciate the extra stress any more than I did as the seller. read more
