So on a…read morerecent cold and wet Melbourne night when I had a hankering for something hot, soupy and delicious I decided to give Fomo a crack at my all-time favourite Thai test: Tom Yum. Such a simple dish is sadly so easy to bugger up, and it seems that so many places don't bother to get their Thai soups right because they have all those strifrys and curries to wow people with. I'm pleased to say that Fomo did a mighty fine job. Their Tom Yum is loaded with seafood, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass and what I think was shredded coconut bits. It came served with it's own little candle heater underneath so it remained hot as I slurped my way through it, dipping my sticky rice in to the broth. At just under $17 it certainly wasn't the cheapest Tom Yum I've ever had, but it was satisfying and very tasty and coupled with some rice and a Thai iced milk tea, I got out of there for under $25. Next time I'm keen to return with a group of friends, as the menu here is just a little bit different with seven types of Som Tum (madness!) and all manner of grilled meats to choose from.

It is not that I don't like Thailand, or the food, but rather because they don't use chopsticks. I even asked my friend who had spent some time in Thailand whether they use chopsticks to which he replied that they just use the humble fork. When I eat Asian food I like eating it with chopsticks, but then that is just my preference. This was an odd restaurant though because despite it being a Thai restaurant, the wall had a number of paintings of scenes from Greece, and one from Australia. The only reference to Thailand that I could find (with the exception of the name and the food) was a photo of the Floating Market tucked away behind the counter. The food was okay (though I forgot to spice it up) but the one dish that really caught my attention was the one that my friend bought. I can't remember its name but it was a curry with bamboo shoots in it and it reeked. I thought it was just me until a number of other objections also began to float up from the table, so I decided to hold my nose until we ended up leaving.

But be warned, even their medium spiced dishes are quite full on and may be too much for anyone not ready and/or willing. One of the other stars of this restaurant are the two sweet older women preparing all of the food in the front of the house. They have thoughtfully created and prepared each dish and it comes across in the satisfying flavor. You can't go wrong with any dish here.

My colleague and I…read morehad been pining for Thai food - me because I had found it unaffordable to have dinner in Perth with each main costing around 27-30 dollars and him having just moved over from Leeds. The restaurant is pretty large and busy and as soon as we entered at around 6.30pm on a Friday we were asked if we had a booking. We said no and were told that we only had the table until 7.30pm. Despite the limited time the waitress did not rush us to order. We ordered the fish cakes (5 on a plate for 8.90 - what a bargain), pork skewers (4 for 8.9), three servings of jasmine rice, duck red curry and chicken massaman curry. The massaman curry actually comes with wagyu beef but they happily exchanged it for chicken. The food arrived fairly quickly. The fish cakes were soft to cut into and very favourable and were complimented by the sweet chilli sauce. The pork skewers were delicious and came with a vinegary soy chopped chilli sauce. The massaman curry contained large pieces of sweet and golden potatoes and succulent large chicken pieces. The red duck curry contained thinly sliced pieces of duck with lychee and peppercorn. The rice was slightly undercooked and crunchy. Though the food tasted great I didn't think it was fresh. I asked for the food to be made slightly hotter and both curries had a kick to them but were not spicy. The red curry tasted exactly the same as the massaman curry. The curries did not have any veggies like carrots or beans that you usually find in a Thai curry. I was really disappointed by the undercooked rice. Though the kitchen is visible and looks clean, the bowls that we ate in looked dusty and old. The food was delicious but the curries did not come with alternate options. For example you couldn't order vegetarian red curry or a tofu green curry like you can in many Thai restaurants where you have the option of which meat you would like to pair with the curry or whether you would like the vegetarian option. They had mushroom rolls and not the usually vermicelli vegetarian spring rolls on the menu. Fresh coconut juice was unavailable and you had to order coconut juice for 7 dollars that came from a can. Outrageous. The bill for two starters, two mains, and three bowls of rice came to around 60 bucks. Pretty cheap compared to Perth and I was pretty full and satisfied but think the menu needs more options.
