We spend quite a bit of time driving our kiddos back and forth to various skate parks in the area. My son had been begging us to take him to the new Vernon Hills Skate Park, so we headed out on a beautiful sunny day. Getting to the park was a little tricky. For some reason we missed the turn. Aspen Drive is a little hidden if you don't look out for it. When in doubt, just turn around in the Vernon Hills Police Department parking lot ;-) The skate park is new and on the smaller side. For our kids, this was a little more on the beginner level. I don't recommend it for advanced riders. The rails and ledges are limited and it's pretty flat. But, it's so nice and new. The park district did a fantastic job. I have no doubt it will get used quite a bit. It's a great place to gather with friends! Take note: There is only a little shade with a couple of covered areas Tons of parking, and there is a Walgreens nearby for those wanting a snack. The nearby Sullivan Center is actually really nice. It was closed the day they went due to Covid19. Highly recommend for those starting out. Open dawn to dusk.

Trees, grasses, streams, and a pond are home to ducks, beavers, muskrats, and a colorful assortment of wildflowers. An asphalt trail circles through the preserve and on any sunny day you see families biking and rollerblading. To the side of the trail are signs highlighting various plants and animals you may see on your walk. On the east end, near Buffalo Grove Road, there is a skate park and roller/ice hockey rink. The hockey rink is busy year round and the skate park is very popular as soon as it warms up. Finally, the park is easily accessible from Willow Stream Park via the overpass over McHenry Road. Kids can safely get from the pool at Willow Stream to the skate park in Busch Grove.

For a little background information, this skate park is one of few poured concrete skate facilities in the state that are open to the public. The Vernon Hills skatepark is another one I've been to. This park is 11,000SF with one bowl, a vert quarter pipe, ledges, and rails. There's a hangout area that *had* benches, but the benches were most likely taken away to help avoid gathering and encourage social distancing. There are currently no benches or designated places to sit. There is no shade, so wear your sunscreen! In case you didn't already know from my other skate park reviews, I'm a mom of two boys who take their scooter riding very seriously. I've been to my fair share of skate parks, and Jewett has now been added to our rotation. However, the boys don't go here as much as I had hoped, because it gets pretty crowded.

There are multiple restroom areas in the park. Pets (dogs to be exact) are allowed for a walk. You get pretty views of sunsets from here over the small lake that's there as the area is scenic. I go here occasionally for either exercising or just to get my mind of things as I find this place relaxing and chill. Check this park out if you haven't been here before. It's worth the visit.

This I had to see for myself. So, the other day I offered to take my kiddos there, and it's not at Abt, but rather hidden in the large Glenview Park District Community Park West right behind Abt. Kids refer to it as the Abt skatepark, because I believe it was sponsored by Abt at one point in time (I mean of course!). The park is a ramp-centric 15,000-square-foot facility designed for beginner and advanced level skaters. It has a bunch of smaller beginning ramps, quarter and half pipes, and a grind box/ledge and rail. There are no bowls. Note: It says no scooters allowed, but there were both scooter riders and skateboarders. The park is off the beaten path. It has benches for taking breaks, and there is also a covered area for those who want to enjoy some shade. On the day we went it was super duper hot, so we were there for only 30 minutes. Plenty of onsite parking.

It's been awhile since I've updated my experience at Rosewood. This review is based on a recent walk I took to get some fresh air and much needed exercise. After parking the car in Downtown Ravinia and walking to Rosewood beach and back to the car (round trip about 1.3 miles), I noticed a bunch of beach updates that are worth mentioning. First of all, gear up, because the beach is open this year and you'll be able to swim! It's a private beach and not free, so you'll have to follow this link (https://www.pdhp.org/beaches/parking-2/) for resident and non-resident fees. This year you can purchase a swim pass and a parking decal. I entered via the dirt path that leads down to the beach so I could make my way back up the stairs for a good stair climb. The path was nicely cleaned up and breathtaking all on its own. Surrounded by lots of foliage and overlooking the ravine, I walked until I met up with the beach boardwalk. The boardwalk is all cleaned up and nicely refreshed. Looks like it did when it first opened! The beach sand is all freshened up and ready for summer. The play structures for kids are covered (but not sanitized). The best part? The steep, really-great-for-your-legs staircase now has handrails! This is such a huge plus for when you can't quite make it up and need to lean over a rail to hold yourself up (don't judge). It was a nice quiet walk, since the beach isn't actually open yet, but it will get crowded for certain. Parking lots have meters.

We often end up parked in our car staring at Lake Michigan at Forest Park Beach. We're convinced that all the other couples we see there are also doing the same thing ;-) Last week, our laziness and overwhelm forced us to get out of the car and take in a fresh air walk along the lakefront. We walked south past the concessions and over near the boating facility. We typically don't leave our car unattended, just in case we might get a ticket. We took the risk, and it was so worth it. TBH I don't think they are monitoring the parking lots or ticketing right now, but I'm not 100% sure. What an absolutely gorgeous discovery! We honestly felt like we were on vacation (without kids). The air was fresh, the water was fairly calm, and we felt grateful to be living near such a beautiful oasis. Along the walkway we discovered a play area for kids, boats ready to launch, a covered area with picnic tables, tall lampposts and pristine landscaping. At the very end of our walk was a goose waiting for her goose companion to come back from sea (lol). We learned from a local that the goose had been there for a few days. Anyway, the sidewalk came to an abrupt end, something like out of a Shel Silverstein poem. We turned around, took a deep breath, and received a call from one of our sons that he and his brother were about to bring a bunch of friends over to our house. And just like that, our peace and calm came to a stop. Until next time...

Lake Forest Beach is a public area with fees incurred for public access. I am a person with a…read moredisability and unable to walk far distances and can not use stairs (age 59) female. I was harassed/shamed when I requested a reasonably accommodation to be dropped off/picked up. I did not ask for entry/parking. All I wanted was a small accommodation to be dropped off and picked up. I was harassed and wasn't allowed to be picked up due to my disability. This is a violation of the ADA (American Disability Act) and was discriminated against due to my disability. LFB is considered a public park and was in violation of my rights as a person with a disability. I understand there are rules and I just wanted a reasonable accommodation to be allowed to be dropped off and picked up not harassed and shamed and left standing in the heat while my husband explained the situation. He showed the gate guard a copy of my "Illinois ID marked as a person with a disability." Beach management need to educate their staff as to making simple reasonable accommodations for people with a disability. They (staff) have no rights to judge and disregard persons with a disability. Such can be reported and subject to significant fines and lawsuits. I suggest ADA compliance and policies for persons with a disability are seriously reviewed and followed according to the American Disability Act. This should NOT have transpired and was humiliating, to be honest.

They therefore went back to the first area, only to have an employee scold us for going back there because "it was already cleaned for the next group." We had no idea they were getting ready for another party. Again, it would have been better to politely say in a microphone prior to moving (so all can hear) that "we are moving on to another area and to not go back to the former as it's being prepared for another group." When we got to the eating area, one of the employees was so intrusive with the bussing of the table! She kept reaching out under *everyone* to get every little wrapper, juice box or a plate that appeared finished. For the love of God! This was so aggravating and other parents noticed as well. At least twice I had to tell her that my kids weren't finished. You couldn't even set something down without fear it would be taken right away! Another thing I found rude is that the employee announced coldly that the kids "couldn't get the cupcake until their pizza was finished." What the hell? This was not enjoyable at ALL, and my 2 boys (7 and 8) did not like this place one bit. We felt shoed out the door. Suggestion: Have employees who actually interact with the kids with organized games. Employees need a microphone as well, for announcements. Smile and cease the cold and demeaning comments. When in the eating area, PLEASE let parents and children eat in peace. Clean up afterwards, not during!!

I recently visited the Asylum skatepark and had an amazing experience! From the moment I arrived, I could tell that this park was designed with skaters in mind. The layout is well thought out, featuring a variety of ramps, rails, and bowls catering to all skill levels. The concrete surface is smooth and well-maintained, making it easy to glide and perform tricks. I particularly enjoyed the Rails and ramps, as it really added to the overall experience. There's also plenty of space for beginners to practice without feeling overwhelmed by more advanced skaters. Safety is clearly a priority here, with plenty of seating areas for spectators and good visibility throughout the park. I also appreciated that there were trash cans and recycling bins available, which helps keep the area clean and inviting. The atmosphere was fantastic--everyone there was friendly and supportive, fostering a great sense of community. I loved seeing skaters of all ages enjoying their time, sharing tips, and cheering each other on. Overall, This place is a fantastic place to skate, hang out, and meet fellow enthusiasts. I can't wait to go back and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to have a good time on their board! read more

They have now extended there capacity back to normal because Aslyum does not care about COVID in any way. Their staff doesn't wear masks and you can but that the 100 scooters kids and skaters don't wear masks at all. read more

Now that I got how awesome these people are, I just have to say that we had a Goaliath Ignite basketball hoop for 4 years and we played on it every week. From the start it had a lot of shake to it that would luckily go away after the rim 'settled in'. However, because my son and I play on it weekly with plenty of hour long sessions, the wear and tear started to become very visible. From rust spots, to the net itself not 'wanting to give our ball back' every time it went into the hoop. We also noticed a forward lean on the rim and as my son got older... So did his friends! So safety started to become a concern of mine now that he was having hoop sessions with friends and I didn't want anything to happen to anybody on our watch. So naturally, we were looking to upgrade which led us to the awesome people at FENCEWORKS. They went over step by step how the process was going to go and it was as easy as pick a rim, and they handled the rest. When it came to buying from Dick's Sporting goods... That was not the case. I had to open a Julie ticket on my own, find an installer while having big heavy boxes sitting around waiting for all of that to be taken care of. Fence Works does all of that for you and they even removed my old rim........ ALL ON THE SAME DAY! Can't recommend them enough not just for basketball hoops but if you're looking to buy a play set for your young family or even setting up an awesome fence around your property... I expected there to be a lot of Christmas music at this event, but that wasn't the case, so that was kind of a downer, but the sound of other runners jingle bells and ho ho hos get ya through the 3 miles! Overall, it's a pretty enjoyable 5k and working out around the holidays when we're all shoving our faces with food with family and friends can't be a bad thing for anyone's health!
