After a failed attempt at staying at a different property on Poipu that turned out to be ant infested (ants were literally crawling all over the bed, walls, floors and shower), my wife found Aston Islander available for a VERY last min booking on the same day at a reasonable rate. Check-in took awhile, but the front desk people were super friendly and provided us a complimentary bottle of wine when they heard that we were staying for our honeymoon. Daily housekeeping is apparently not offered, but we did ask that fresh towels be provided daily. This request was hit or miss, and we often found ourselves needing to go to the front desk to ask for a change in towels the next day. The room itself is surprisingly spacious and clean, although older and dated. It was quite amazing to wake up to the sight of the beautiful Pacific Ocean right outside our patio window every morning. Although the waters on this side of the island were not protected and too rough for us to think about jumping into the ocean safely. We were told that seals and sea turtles would occasionally make their way onto the beach, however this was apparently more of a rare sighting and never materialized during our stay. We actually just wound up going to Poipu most evenings to see the sea turtles come in to rest on the beach. There is a DVD machine near the front desk where you can rent movies for free. And a Playstation in the room to watch the DVD's with. However, the dual shock controller definitely had taken a lot of abuse and would just rumble randomly whenever the power was turned on. And most of the buttons either did not work or would only work sporadically. There are no elevators here, despite the various buildings being at least 3 stories tall. We wound up having a 2nd floor room and found ourselves hauling all of our heavy luggage up multiple flights of stairs. If you are elderly or disabled, you should definitely request a 1st floor room. Additionally, they do not have any real lighting on the outdoor common areas that connect the rooms with the front foyer. Instead, there are just the small, garden solar lights stuck into the ground along the paved path. This is honestly quite a safety issue as the area is literally pitch black at night as you're either leaving the property or coming back. With only the small lights on the floor to guide your way while you hope you don't trip over any cracks or unseen objects. The hotel has a large, private parking lot that is shared with the nearby businesses on the same property lot. However despite the large amount of parking spots, we constantly found ourselves needing to circle the lot looking for a free spot whenever we returned back later at night. We suspect that some locals may be using their parking lot for temporary/long-term parking, as we did see a few vehicles that had multiple tickets on the windshield during our stay with warnings of towing due to abandonment. Despite the tickets/warnings, we did not see any of these vehicles actually towed during our entire stay here. Despite the issues outlined above, we did overall enjoy our stay here. And would recommend this property if you're looking for a slightly more affordable option than many of the high-end resorts that dot this island. read more

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Kauai for the first time and stayed at the Aston Islander on the Beach. Booking through Costco was a breeze, and I felt like I got a good deal. Overall, I'd give my experience a solid three stars. First off, the staff was wonderful. Peggy at the front desk was the sweetest and made us feel right at home. The hotel grounds were stunning, with a beautiful pool area and lush surroundings. And those chickens? They were everywhere! A fun surprise for a first-timer like me. We had a garden-facing room on the third floor that still offered a decent ocean view. The room was a bit dated, but I loved having a little kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, and sink. Plus, the DVD rental in the lobby was a nice touch since every room has a DVD player. There were a few surprises, like no elevator, so lugging our bags up three flights was a workout. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, but we got two free drink tickets for the Tiki Bar, which made the wait more enjoyable. However, the Wi-Fi in our room was spotty, and there wasn't much help available. Luckily, I managed to hop onto the neighbor's Wi-Fi to stream Netflix, though the local TV never worked, which was a bit of a bummer. The early morning rooster calls were definitely new for me, but I came to appreciate them as part of the island charm. Parking was tricky if we got back late, but on the bright side, the location was fantastic. We could walk to the Coconut Marketplace, and the vouchers and coupons we received were a nice perk. A pretty decent place to stay in Kauai. I booked through Costco and didn't have to pay the $27 daily resort fee, which was a nice bonus. The rooms themselves were actually pretty nice. There were some things that were really good, while others were just okay. What was great: The rooms were comfortable and clean. They provided beach towels, and the DVD rental was a cool touch. The location is great and very central, making it easy to get around Kauai. There's no shortage of food nearby since Coconut Marketplace is close by. They also had a refillable water station in the lobby, which was super clutch. What was just okay: The pool isn't heated, and the jacuzzi was only lukewarm. There are also no elevators, so if you're on the third floor, expect to carry tour luggage up quite a few stairs. Lastly if for some reason parking runs out you'll have to park on the public street, luckily for my time it wasn't fully occupied so I didn't have any issues. Overall, if you come in not expecting anything fancy, this is a great place to stay! read more

I booked a oceant front room for a couples trip for 4 nights via Costco Travel and really enjoyed our stay at Aston Islander on the Beach. We loved being steps away from the ocean, and because the hotel is located on the east side of the island, we were able to catch sunset every morning. We spent some time relaxing by the pool/hot tub and on the chairs provided on the beach but also spent some time exploring the rest of the island. I thought the hotel's location was very conveniently located for that, as it was less than an hour's drive to both the north and south side of the island. The town of Kapa'a is minutes away, and the hotel is very close to the Kapa'a bike path where you can walk/bike along the ocean. Speaking more to the hotel's location, it was amazing that there were stores and restaurants within walking distance. Coconut Marketplace is right in front of the hotel, and there are two fantastictic restaurants (Lava Lava on the Beach and Hukilau Lanai) you can access in minutes. The room itself was decent but not amazing. It felt a bit dated. We found the wifi spotty at times, though sometimes it was fast enough for us to get some work done on our laptops. Other times I had to turn on my phone hotspot because the internet was so slow. There weren't enough outlets in the room either. We struggled to find easy to access outlets and could only find one near the table / patio door, so it was a bit inconvenient to charge our phones there. Two resort amenities we really appreciated: 1) the water filtration machine in the lobby was super helpful and I don't understand why every hotel doesn't have one, and 2) the DVD rental machine. We didn't expect to rent any movies, but we ended up watching 3 movies, mostly at night while we were relaxing in bed. The movie selection was very updated and included a lot of newer movies, which was nice. We were always able to find parking in the parking lot, but there's a lot of additional parking for Coconut Marketplace, so I was never stressed about returning late and not being able to find a spot. Although we recently stayed at this property, I want to provide a caveat up front that we did not stay here via Aston but through Vacasa, the company managing the unit in which we stayed (unit 354). So this review is more about our experience at this property and not so much about the service provided by the property itself. We did indeed love our stay here. Though we have stayed at larger and better appointed condos in the past, we have no complaints about this particular unit, which is arguably one of the two best units on the property in terms of location--third floor, corner unit, and oceanfront. The corner gives you an additional window to make the smallish unit feel larger, and the view front the lanai is amazing. We spent many hours out there just reading, talking, and enjoying the view. (When I say "smallish," I'm not saying the units here are tiny. They are about the size of your average hotel room.) The unit was very quiet, especially with no one above us and a neighbor only on one side. Even while we were on the lanai, what you mostly heard were the waves. The pedestrian traffic on the beachwalk is minimal here. Another bonus is that you are literally steps away from both the Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant, Imua Coffee Roasters, and all of the shops and restaurants at the Coconut Marketplace. I'm not exaggerating. The location is superb. But if you do want to drive somewhere, you are not more than a few blocks to two miles from just about everything else in Kapa'a. The grounds were beautifully landscaped, and we enjoyed every day that we walked through them to our unit. Whoever is taking care of the flowers, plants, and the grounds in general is doing a really great job. During our stay, we didn't encounter any problems with parking, and the walk isn't very far to just about any unit on the property. Our unit had a king size bed, a small table for two, a small kitchenette with a sink and microwave, and a shower/tub combo in the bathroom. The sink is inside the bathroom where the toilet and tub are, but you do have the kitchenette sink if a second person needs to be using a sink while someone is in the bathroom, provided you don't need a mirror right in front of you. Our unit was air-conditioned, which was a plus, and it worked very well. Because we rented through Vacasa, we did not have regular housekeeping--only extra linens and other items provided via Vacasa's housekeeper, as needed. Some people have complained that Vacasa isn't very responsive, but I didn't find that to be the case during our stay. You can easily communicate via text with them, and they respond pretty quickly. We made one request while we were there, and the first person I texted with seemed a bit hesitant to help, but the extremely friendly housekeeper did get back to us and got us what we needed in a very reasonable timeframe. I highly recommend finding a unit that suits you here at the Aston if you are looking for a decent place to stay on the Coconut Coast. You can check directly with Aston, but the best deals are usually found through Vacasa or services like VRBO and Airbnb. read more

The town of Kapaa itself is an excellent location if you want to visit Poipu and Hanalei areas. We stayed 12 nights at Islander on the Beach in March 2024, and we absolutely loved it as our home base on Kauai :) The grounds of the property were incredibly well maintained.. the tropical plants were beautiful & smelled so good each morning! The hot tub was the perfect temperature & big enough for 8-10 people cozily. The location in Kapa'a is very central on the island so you can get to Princeville or Poipu in 45 minutes! Our oceanfront unit was on the 3rd floor & it was awesome to have a balcony with chairs & a table to watch/hear the waves crash! The units are all studios with a bed, loveseat pullout bed, & a little kitchenette with a fridge & microwave but no stovetop, hot plate, or toaster oven. There were 3 grills by the pool for cooking too. The air conditioning worked great & the bathroom was pretty big too. The property does have a cute tiki pool bar called The SandBar. The hours were random (6a-11a then 3p-10p).. and sometimes the bartender didn't show up for the afternoon shifts. Weird that you couldn't order a drink at the pool from 11a-3p... at least you can BYOB at the pool! Parking was free & in a lot out front, you get a hang tag from the front desk so you can come/fo as you please; the lot does get full though & the overflow is at Coconut Marketplace. All in all, our stay in Kapa'a was wonderful & the Islander made it even better :) loved the hot tub, our oceanfront balcony, & the property grounds! read more

The only recommendation would be the view and the beach bar, oh and location. Service was mid at best. They put us in a room with a super loud a/c unit (I thought it was an alarm going off), and when we told them that was a deal breaker for us they pushed us to the back of the line for a new room. Check in was supposed to 3pm and we didn't get in until almost 4. They seemed unconcerned with the lout a/c unit and a little offended that it bothered us. Piña coladas are on point, tho, and the view doesn't suck. Lots of rust in the units themselves and furniture could use updating. read more

My main complaint during my stay is the limited parking. With the number of buildings and the small parking lot, it's a pain trying to get parking if you don't come back early. Also of note, their website hasn't been updated in a while and some things are no longer available like their coffee coupon. The hotel's location is very convenient. It's next to the beach so you can get that nice sunrise view. There is a shopping center right next door. They also have a bunch of different plants around the property with labels you can read about. The hotel room itself was good. They have a kitchen with boilers, fridge, toaster, microwave, and all your kitchen needs. No room service or towel replacements since we stayed only 4 days. read more

Amenities are good rooms are a little outdated no room service unless you have a stay of 5 days or more. Tile floor twin beds, when we booked we put 2 don't know how to get a queen a bed. For us the twin bed was hard to sleep in we barely fit. good running water for the shower shower gel, shampoo included. Little kitchen no stove sink a few dishes no silverware. microwave. Ac works quiet people respect your space. Pool spa and the beach right in front of you. Towels in the lobby. No food service in this place need to go to the market places. Parking does get full. No elevator stars only up to 3 floors. Balcony locks make sure don't sleep with it open there was a break in at 3am when we were there no security on the premises you need to call 911. Pool and spa are clean. The premises was very clean and well kept. The beach was nice the even had a few chairs out there. There was a homeless guy sleeping behind a log but he didn't bother. Lobby staff most of them Not friendly. For the price it's a good stay.. for me no I am all about customer service we felt very unwelcome here. The room accommodates is a hard no we need sleep and we sleep together I don't know why we didn't get a queen bed booking does not give you an option. Check in is very slow and they are full here more than likely you cannot check in until your time or even later. read more

We had a really good experience here at the Aston. Overall the beachfront rooms are nice, bed was comfortable and the kitchen amenities were great. It was wonderful to wake up and see the sunrise and then end the day with the sunset. So pretty! The only complaint was that they told us our kids could not go in the hot tub :( We partially chose the place for the pool and hot tub and it was super disappointing! On days that are chilly or raining, a hot tub is a great solution for kids. We also have one at home, so they know how to handle themselves. Just came to check in to my room and was told that there is no room available and that check in "starts" at 3... it is now almost 4....was given the option of hanging out at the pool or some random assortment of 10% off coupons for restaurants. Was told my room "may" be ready in about an hour. I called twice earlier to see about early check in because I landed three hours ago at no point was I informed that my room would not be available until later. This is incredibly unacceptable and unprofessional. The room I PAID for is unavailable and I'm being told that it is my problem because they don't have housekeepers...well maybe they shouldn't overbook themselves then. I will NEVER stay here again!! I had the pleasure of staying here with my wife during my 50th birthday. Couldn't have picked a more perfect spot to enjoy our 4-day getaway. The location is just steps away from the beach and the lanai was such a pleasure to spend mornings and afternoons while being greeted by the local moa-moa (chickens) and roosters patrolling the common grounds. The bed we slept in was so comfortable adorned with plenty of pillows. Every morning we both woke up refreshed and ready for our daily adventures on the beautiful island. I enjoy having a small fridge to store our bottle waters. We also enjoyed having the Coconut Marketplace just a short walk away with some places to eat, shop and also grab some groceries at the market. The only subtle issues we ran into with the unit is the musty smell when you first arrive but opening the sliding door and allowing fresh air to come in quickly relieves that issue. Also the front door lock was confusing to figure out. We found out that it's best to leave it as is because it's already set to lock from the inside but check it first by testing it from the outside. Having a keypad entry was convenient to have and easy to enter. Also keep in mind that the property we stayed in was booked through VRBO, although shares the common ground with other units, is privately maintained meaning that if you need clean towels, you will need to contact the unit manager. The only thing the facilities will provide you is a parking pass to avoid having your car being ticketed. read more

The Aston Islander ground floor ocean view rooms are directly on the beach. This is a casual beach hotel that is centrally located where everything you need is with in walking distance. The Coconut Market Place has shops, restaurants, and a market. The Lava lava Beach Club is near by and has live music and a great happy hour. There are paths that lead to the beach and safe places to swim and see the monk seals that nap on the shore. They have a pool and hot tub and BBQ area as well. read more

It was a beautiful place to stay. I picked the ocean front rooms ground floor so that the walking distance to the beach and lounge on the chairs were closer. Bed was comfortable, AC was strong, the shampoo and conditioner were good quality too. I have to comment on that because I have long hair and different hair products cause tangling but theirs conditioned and softened my hair. I would have given it a five star but I dropped off a star because it is not mobility friendly. I use a cane and a Walker at times and from the front of the lobby there was no elevators or ramp to get me down the stairs into the lobby to check in. I asked 2 staff members before struggling down the stairs and then asked the front desk gal if there was any other way to get into the lobby without the stairs and they said, "No". So that, I didn't like. The next day I found that you can access the lobby from the rear but to exit you still have to walk up the stairs. read more

Our room was great, and overall, my girlfriend and I enjoyed that we were so close to the beach, and could walk there every day The only reason I WON'T give this place 5/5 is because on the website, the hotel stated that guests would receive complimentary non-alcoholic drinks upon arrival, and we did not receive any shell leis as the website also promised. It's a small thing, but I do not like false advertising. 4 stars because the staff was very nice, and offered to hold our bags for us due to us having a late flight, and having to check out early. The first thing I booked for our Hawaiian honeymoon, after our flight, was our room here at Aston - we were in the Kauai building, room 330, and I highly recommend it. Check-in and check-out were easy, property is beautiful and right on the water as the name implies. I debated between booking a garden view room and an ocean view room, and the ocean view was worth the splurge for our special trip to wake up to that view each day. I am unlikely to return to Kauai specifically with so many different places we'd like to travel to, but would recommend this property - it came up well ranked several times as a good value during my research process, and my experience confirmed this info. Our room was somewhat dated for decor but very clean. If my vacation is going well, I'm not spending much time in my room, so this is a minor point to me - the bathrooms are updated but it's not a resort and they don't bill themselves as a luxury property, but the room was good and had what we needed (TV, microwave, refrigerator, comfortable bed/linens, etc.). You will need a car to get around Kauai, but you can easily walk to a good number of shops, restaurants, and coffee shops from here. Upon check-in, they provided coupons for free coffee and bike rentals, which was a nice touch. A couple of things to note: the beach is pretty rocky here, so it might not be ideal if your plan is to bring small kids and play in the water all day. I had to crab-walk on my butt over the rocks to get to the water, and even then proceed with caution. It's not really something they can control or fix, but something to keep in mind. Also, their parking situation - it's a fairly large lot but if you get here at night, you will probably have a hard time finding parking. Spaces are also kind of narrow. We had good luck finding parking around the back by the bar/grill, or you can park on the road leading to the property. read more

If you're visiting Kauai, I highly recommend not staying here. The building and rooms are nice, but the customer service was really bad. The GM would not even speak with us about the temp of the room. We had paid for a 6 night stay, the first night it was so warm and muggy in the room, I soaked the bed with sweat. Maintenance came and said "it was an old system and that's why it doesn't cool properly." Management said they don't move guests just because they're uncomfortable. There was another unit available that said it had central air. We ended checking out the next day and into the Outrigger Kaua'i Beach Resort. What a huge difference, without a price difference. I highly recommend staying there. Super nice and accommodating employees, beautiful grounds, live local band for happy hour. Had to actually adjust the A/C it was getting to cool. I live on the Big Island so I'm used to the heat and humidity. Learn from my expensive mistake, skip Islander and book Outrigger. read more

This is a great little hotel. It's a quiet and cozy hotel, a very Hawaiian hotel, a place you relax in. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the staff is genuinely friendly. They welcome you with a real smile. It has everything I want - comfortable and clean rooms, a bar in a thatch-roofed palapa, grills, a pool that feels heated even though it is not, and a nice hot tub. We've really enjoyed getting in the water when we get back in the late afternoon. I love to grill fresh fish or Kauaiian prawns when we're in Hawaii. Two bonuses: 1) free DVD rentals, 2) a book of coupons that you can use every day for a mango lemonade at the palapa or a free coffee next door at Imua Coffee Roasters. They have *really* good coffee. This is a lovely hotel. This week marks our fourth time here, and it will not be our last. Can't wait to return. read more

This place started out as a 3 star but it kind of grew on me over time. Upon arrival, I was a bit disappointed that we ended up with a ground floor room when I requested a quiet 3rd floor unit and had heard other guests being asked if they had a preference. Even though it was an oceanview room, the windows and patio doors were so dirty that you couldn't really see much through them and you can tell it needs a remodel as the doors still say ResortQuest from the days before it switched back to Aston which has been quite some time now and the screens quite old and hard to open at times. So why the 4 stars? Having the ground floor room meant I could walk out and catch the sunrise as soon as it peaks or be at the beach within a matter of minutes and not have to worry about the stairs since they do not have elevators. Once you do get the doors open, it does have some nice ocean and surf views from the chairs outside and security does patrol the grounds making you feel pretty safe leaving your patio door open during the day. Overall, this is a no frills hotel that gives you a pretty good value if you do not plan on spending too much time on site but because it is no frills, a $20 daily resort/amenity fee does seem a stretch for essentially lemonade or coffee and dvd rentals and free detergent for their coin operated washer/dryers on site . The sand is on the coarser side and not quite a swimmable beach but nice to hang out first thing in the morning to catch that sunrise or enjoy your cup of coffee. read more

As many have said the outdoor areas and beach by the property are beautiful. The landscapers are doing a great job at maintaining the property. I would say that overall the stay was enjoyable but there is plenty of room for improvement. Keep reading for a list of my pros and cons but ultimately as one other reviewer said "motel 6 quality rooms" they are dated and are showing their age. Maintenance has not done a great job inside the rooms. Shower curtain has mold spots Plastic shower liner has mold/mildew around the rings Tile in shower has screw holes from where something use to be - fill in holes and buff out or remove and replace tile (could be leaking into the wall causing a much more serious issue/health hazard) Curtains by sliding glass door are stained with what looks like blood and the other curtain is filthy. Bottom of door in bathroom is splintering and needs attention Air flow is so horrible you have signs saying leave doors open. Electrical work is questionable as there is a sign saying no more than 2 appliances at one time or maintenance will charge you to reset the faulty breaker/electrical work..(seems like a building issue/code violation. Not a customers problem for you to charge more) Horrible nickel and dime tactics 2 safes in the closet (1 doesn't work at all, the other one you have to use a key because the code has not been reset) No phone in the room (so basic it's not basic) Door slams exceptionally hard and pushes you out of the room when you leave. Slams on you when you enter. Door dead bolt doesn't work (HUGE SAFETY issue) All things considered I would give them another chance, but not before I gave their competition the same chance I gave them. read more

Beautiful local kanaka Maoli working at the front desk. Great customer service. The property and the grounds are beautiful. Our room was as expected. But no shower gel in the shower. Went to the front desk and that was easily replaced the next day. We would stay there again. read more

The services is too bad. The hotel Receptionist is rude and unprofessional. She Doesn't show any kind of respect for the guests. She skipped me twice She first started talking with other guest when I was the first one in the line and told hold on after that another guy came and gave her the cell phone to speak with some one else on the phone and also she ignored me and start taking with the guy on the mobile. Stayed here in 2017 for a solo-travel trip, it was a wonderful experience. Stayed in a Garden view room and was woken up every morning by the friendly neighbor. At first it was annoying but by day two, I woke up to go out on the beach and watch the sunrise. Good choice. I'm planning another trip to Kauai and will definitely stay at Aston... it was such a good experience before. Easy check in, friendly staff, free movie rentals, beautiful sunrises, yummy food choices nearby, gorgeous island, farmers market with huge juicy mangos and just spectacular views. read more

It was my first time to Kauai. We booked an ocean view room but got a garden room instead. Immediately opening the door to the room, I noticed the tile floor was really dirty. It was so dirty that my husband & I couldn't even walk barefoot. It had debris & spillage stains. It was so hot in the room so we turned on the ac & it seemed clogged because it was making a loud noise. We slept very uncomfortable in a hot noisy room. Definitely wouldn't waste my hard earned money here again. read more

My wife did an extensive search to find a deal on the beach in Kapaa. We booked through a realtor and got a condo on the beach with a kitchenette at the Aston and damn was it great. Condo is connected with the resort but booked differently. Also this isn't a normal resort. It has a pool a hot tub and pool bar but no connected restaurants and that's beautiful. By the pool are three gas grills which I used four nights of our five night stay. Great cooking local ono fish, local grass feed meat with things like shrimp, local Japanese eggplant and potatoes. Saved big money cooking for our selves here and that was a huge win. Our room was right on the beach. Loved this place because the next property over has the Lava Lava which was a regular happy hour stop for us every night. Also next to the property is the Coconut Marketplace which has a couple more eating and drinking options, shopping and an ABC store, which was helpful. If seeing sunrises is important to you, this is perfect spot. I'm a photographer and photographing sunrise is a key event for me when traveling. From our room we were seconds from being on the beach photographing. We were even lucky enough to see whales heading north from our balcony; super special. When we return to Kapaa, this is the only place we'll stay at. read more

I was a little hesitant to book a room here after seeing all the negative reviews. We wound up with an oceanfront room that was just fabulous. About 100 feet from the ocean, the room exceeded our expectations. The location of this place is great and a short walk to shopping and a wonderful market and deli. The kitchenette saved us a ton of money because the restaurants here are pricey! Now, if all you whiners are expecting a 5 star hotel, go somewhere else! These places are older, but the grounds are absolutely beautiful and the landscaping and cleaning crews do a fabulous job. And, we found the folks at the front desk were really friendly (regardless of what the haters said). We will certainly be back! read more

First of all, let me say, we paid almost 400.00 for one night. When we found out that our room had an ocean view, we were like jackpot!! Once we to the room, we noticed the floors were stained, the door was hard to open and close, the vent of the air conditioning had a lot of mold, the drapes were old, and the whole room smelled moldy. Then we had a DVD we tried to figure out how to play it....we called the front desk and told her our problem, her response was "I'm here by myself so I can send maintenance" when I asked how long before they come? She said tomorrow..really? When my husband got on the phone, she kept making excuses...I'm by myself, I'm new, I dont know what to do. She finally told us, OMG, I'm hanging up, i cannot handle you.
