My boiler shut down. I called Astar, (I have a service contract with) and 2 hours later their guy showed up, he was polite but seemed inexperienced, he changed four different parts on my boiler and each time he changed a part he would look confused and say he doesn't know why it wasn't working, and than would change another part and after changing 4 parts while on the phone with his boss John the whole time, said he didn't know what else to do and that they would send another tech in the morning, charged me an outrageous $3800 for parts ranging from $150.-200 each and 4 1/2 hours later left my house with half the heat working. John comes the next day and checks my boiler, does some adjustments and the boiler starts up again and left it in working condition, until a week later the boiler shuts off again. I called Astar, and this time they send 3 guys and 2 trucks to my house They checked the boiler and told me, I had a bad zone valve, an additional $700 to fix. At this time I was furious, you would think being a service contract holder, and them being here just a week ago for 4 1/2 hours and $3800 later, I'm out a days work, they would replace the valve for free or at a discount, no they wanted to robbed me again and I just couldn't allowed it, I asked them to do nothing and leave. I then called another plumbing company D Rohde their guy Brian was great, professional and experienced he did a complete thorough check of my boiler. something that Astar didn't do, diagnosed the problem it wasn't a zone valve like Astar said. It was JUST A LOOSE WIRE. He tightened it and the boiler turned on, it's been two weeks and my boiler is working fine. I'm very disappointed with Astar. They are very overpriced. I spent a lot of money replacing a sewer pump that they misdiagnosed as not working at a cost of about 1800.00. What a shame it never occurred to them that the issue was actually due to a loss of electricity in the room. I also spent a fortune on a new gas boiler about a year ago. I have been calling them for a month for a very simple cleaning service. The staff answering the phones keep promising me they will look into what was recommended from the comfort care technician about this simple maintenance service for my boiler, but never get back to me. Perhaps they don't make enough money in this, but it is very unprofessional. When asked, I was told that the manager or owner would call me back, but of course, they also don't call back either. I should be able to get service in getting little compartment containing these small white pearls cleaned as they now sit in dirty, rusty orange tinted water. I spent about 25,000 on this boiler system. If I knew they are so bad at helping me keep this expensive heating system well maintained, I would have never ever given them my business to begun with. Extortion? Exploitation It's about the words I can describe their service and my experience. Unfortunately I had a pipe burst and to be clear. I found the burst spot myself after being told it's impossible. The guy doesn't even give it any effort even i told them I don't need their warranty. Just fix it!! Here comes to good part thou. After I found the problem spot, they wanted $400 to fix it by simply putting copper cap on the end of a copper pipe. The cap probably cost $1 at Home Depot. Under worrying situations, they really name their price. (See image if you want know what $400 for) after some negotiations and misunderstanding, I got away with a $200 bill. It's stupid of me to call these big company with 24/7 service like jones. Never again. The scariest thing is they have my information and knows who calls every time. S#!tshow heating & A/C; an absolute catastrophe from the moment I sent them money until they finally got their act together to finish the project four and a half months later (with mediocre results at best). Their ability to communicate was abysmal and they utterly failed to take any sort of meaningful responsibility several times over. They proved unable to track information both internally and especially coming from me (even by email!) and in the end seem not to have much of an understanding of the products they sell. The trouble started when they failed to note the several times I told them I was in Putnam rather than Dutchess county. Turns out they're not licensed in Putnam, but instead of doing the right thing and telling me that so that we could find a solution, they gave me nebulous excuses about how there was a snag with the electrical permit and that it was going to take a little more time. They were quick to get some things installed (probably so I couldn't walk away from the contract), but then were unresponsive and would only give me a runaround on when things would happen and never answered my questions fully. This issue almost screwed me out of a rebate as I had to tell them several times that I'm with NYSEG instead of Central Hudson before they got it right. Their initial timing estimate left me with the choice of shlepping diesel for a few weeks to keep my hot water running or dealing with 100+ gallons of fuel oil when the job was done, so I went with the former. That would've been easy if it had hit their early target of two weeks and a reasonable but manageable hassle at their late target of six. They left me cold for three unexpected months (Jan-Apr) during which I spent many hours and hundreds of dollars on diesel, firewood, and electric heaters (not to mention an astronomical electric bill). In compensation they took roughly $1200 off my $43000 bill, which feels about like getting a dollar tip on a $50 check. Along the way, there were other issues (such as their plan to leave the boiler "as a backup" for me to deal with despite my having told their sales rep point blank that my whole aim was to remove the boiler). The quality of work was OK, but by no means great. The vents they use are absurdly cheap, don't really open & close properly, and the control knob frequently comes out when I try to operate them. Information from the installation planning meeting was either ignored or changed on the fly but their technicians, and one of their guys gouged my mechanical room door while removing the old boiler tank (which would've been easily avoided with the extra minute's work to put a blanket over it) & didn't so much as apologize for it. On top of it all, I'm still finding trash from the job around my property. Finally, their design of the system doesn't allow different rooms to run different functions; an issue I never would have accepted if I'd known. (for what it's worth, that seemed a surprise to the technician who came back to address the non-functioning thermostat they initially left me with). Also: upon the end their last scheduled install day, and with zero warning that this was going to happen, the installer demanded that I pay the remaining $23000 balance right then and there as though everyone simply has that amount of cash in their checking account or available on their credit card at all times and would not leave until I put half on a card, only accepting the half payment because I could name issues they still needed to come back and fix. The rep that sold me the system in the first place was kind, courteous, and gave me lots of faith in that company but I deeply wish that they'd sent someone less likable and more reflective of their actual business. After installing a new water pressure tank, I have been told by several other plumbers that I was basically robbed by you, charged about 2/3 more then what would be a fair price. After this replacement, the issue we originally called for, air in our lines, was still there. You then quoted us a price of $2000. to find our well, 10% more then the $200. we paid a well guy, to find. You also quoted an additional price of $11,000. to replace our pump and raise the well cap to above ground, again, priced well above the actual price we've paid of $4300. I will never do business with this company again. NEVER! They are vastly more expensive than any similar company and a lot less competent. The owner claims that they are more expensive because they have the best techs who stay updated on all the latest HVAC/plumbing stuff. A bunch of BS. WE requested a tech to come out and diagnose our pressure issues. I thought he would look closely at our well pump and pressure tank. He didn't look at the well pump at all and hardly did anything with the pressure tank. Then quoted me over $7,000 for a new well pump and pressure tank. Again he didn't even look at the well pump. Very generic written estimate with absolutely no specific info on what kind of tank and pump would be installed. When I requested a bit more info their employee Jim sends me a revised estimate with a specific model tank that when I checked the specs, I discovered was much too large for the crawlspace that the current tank is located in. I informed Jim of this. He said he would speak to the tech and get back to me with a quote for a tank that fits. Over the course of the following two days he sent me a couple of emails saying he still needed to speak to the tech. That was last week and I haven't heard back from him since. If I had green lighted his original quote, Astar would have shown up on installation day with a tank that wouldn't fit wasting their time and mine. Since when is it the customer's responsibility to check the specs of equipment to see if it will fit? Aren't their "best in the business" techs supposed to figure that out by maybe taking a measurement of the space? Absolutely incompetent company in my opinion. I still haven't heard back from Jim. Now $17,000 later, countless cold nights, more service calls requiring my attendance and additional fees for a myriad of "simple fixes", a re-install and we STILL HAVE NO HEAT. Well that's not entirely true, we generally have heat for a few minutes here and there before the unit turns off altogether AGAIN. After a full system replacement of the original "top of the line, name brand" furnace, by Astar, in the fall they were advised that the system shut down during one brief cold spell. And in full disclosure, I did acknowledge with warm weather approaching the fix wasn't urgent. That said, my most recent calls have resulted in absolutely NO follow up. Granted my last schedule was challenging to work within as I'm on a 6 day work week. That said, one would think their services had 7 day coverage. Still though, NO FOLLOW-UP. On a positive note, their office staff, manning the phones are always kind and understanding. Their techs clean and tidy. Ed Engle and his next in line Jeff as well as additional staff willing to gouge you for every penny and leave you and your loved ones frigid, with no recourse through cold NY winters, should be ashamed of themselves. After quoting me a price and I had no choice I needed water. I went with it. It took them 4 days to come out with the tank. And once installed water was running. Smaller tank which I was not happy with but installed. Next to the tank was my washer and dryer. They had to move it but I. The process now no longer works. Thanks to Astar. If you have someone that can watch what they do and is knowledgeable of things. Watch them. They will break other things just to come back and charge you more for what was already working. Issues with water heater (silt and brown water). Contacted ASTAR with this plumbing issue asking that a plumber be sent out. Sent HVAC tech who was not knowledgeable about this issue, although this is not to disparage the tech as he may be wonderful for HVAC. My husband told him he thought we needed new anodes but wasn't sure. Tech left and placed order for anodes. When the anodes came in, we received call with installation date and time - Tues 04/26/22, 12:00PM-5:00PM. Kept the afternoon free for the tech by scheduling an app't for that morning. Monday the 25th, call from the original HVAC tech stating he'd be here on the next day. I asked why they weren't sending a plumber. Said he was trained in plumbing also, but I questioned why he couldn't diagnose the problem when he was here, and that I'd like a plumber. Said ok, he'd let them know. My husband called later that same day with a question, and confirmed the time, 12:00-5:00. The following day, I was on my way out the door for a 10:00 app't when my husband forwarded to me a text stating the tech was on his way. I called the office and reminded them that our app't was for the afternoon and I was on my way to an app't. Sorry, but he needs 3 hrs for the anodes replacement so needs to come now. I reiterated that I was on my way to a 10:00 app't and he needed to come at the stated and confirmed time. Again, sorry but he must come now and didn't know why we weren't informed. We could reschedule for next week. NO! I rearranged my day to accommodate them and I expected them there no earlier than 11:30, at which time I was sure I'd be back home. Put me on hold and another women answered who I believe was a supervisor. No idea I was being transferred. Explained again and was greeted with a condescending and patronizing attitude....I apologize for the inconvenience but he must come now, not at 11:30 or 12:00-5:00. No concern for the fact that we were never informed of their change in time, or that I'd scheduled an app't that I now needed to cancel just minutes before my arrival time. In the long run, I was forced to cancel my app't in order to have the silty, brown water corrected as we'd been living with it for several weeks already. The plumber was very knowledgeable and professional, taking care of the problem. He spent time testing the water and filling the tub mid-way in order to visually see the problem (something the HVAC tech did not do. He merely ran an inch or so of water and said it wasn't happening for him, which wasn't true since I'd informed him that it happens when the tub is filled quickly to capacity, not just an inch or 2). Noah also called the mfg of the water heater in order to help diagnose the problem. No other issue with the water so far, but we'll see as time goes by since our total bill was for well over $800. Noah is the only reason I am giving 3 stars. I also don't blame the original HVAC tech for not knowing how to diagnose as this was not his area of expertise, although I was still charged the $200 plus tax for a diagnosis. The office supervisor/manager was unprofessional; uncaring; patronizing, rather than making it right. For that reason alone, I would not recommend this company. The salesman that took my order in October 2020 (it is now July 2021 and I am still dealing with them) gave false information on my furnace and ac replacement, as well as failed to measure the gas conversion unit for my fireplace. $20k investment and they proved to be extremely incompetent and their work was less than professional. They left a huge gaping hole above my fireplace that my two year old can climb into. More than once they promised to re-install the marble surround they removed to install the conversion. They measured the unit wrong then left me with the hole that I now have to pay a carpenter to custom a surround for. We no longer live in New York, but I knew I wanted Edward Engle's help to design a supplementary heating system for our home in Maryland. Our house is 100+ years old, and had been retrofitted by an earlier owner with an inefficient and poorly designed heating system that left the ground floor almost unheated. On cold days, it could be 72 in the bedrooms and 54 in the kitchen and den! Unfortunately, the old system was too deeply embedded in the house to allow us to tear it out entirely. Ed designed a fabulous supplementary system for our ground floor. The variable-speed Lennox furnace is 98% efficient and has plenty of capacity to expand to other parts of the house in the future. The system incorporates an AprilAire automatic humidifier with hot water feed, a pleated air filter, and a internet-connected thermostat. Placing the registers in the floor of our ground level (instead of in the walls) simplified the ductwork and reduced the cost considerably, and also delivers the heat where we need it most. The performance is fantastic. Even on the coldest mornings, it can bring the ground floor to a comfortable and well-humidified 70 degrees in no time at all. Called Astar to fix a faulty switch on our gas fireplace weeks ago. The technician showed up and confirmed what we already told them, that the switch was faulty. This company originally installed the gas fireplace in 2003. They have records of what type of system was installed. The technician said he has to see if he can order a part for this particular fireplace. They charged us almost $300 for that visit; just to tell us what we already knew. Fast forward several weeks later and still didn't get a call regarding whether or not they could locate the part or fix the fireplace switch. When I called to inquire and also complain. The receptionist said very smugly..."well, we let the customer know before we go out for a service that we charge a home visit fee. If you'd like, I can play the message back to you." I hired aster to replace my central air conditioner. Ever since I hired them I have problems. I have rattling in the air conditioner vents, and every tech that comes to my home doesn't know how to fix it. They come up with all kinds of excuses. They are very disrespectiful. They come into your home and do what ever they want. From the beginning when they first put in the air conditioner the techs thought I was a grocery store and wanted me to keep bottled water here for him. Then he wanted me to move my car out of the garage because he didn't want to work in the sun. I told another tech not to go into a room and he kept on trying to get in. They broke my vent in the bathroom. The first tech that came to fix the rattling kicked a tv, and put grease on my clothes. Jeff showed up after that with his "best tech Ron" and told us that the screws were not tight. Jeff got annoyed that he paid for the tv and the clothes. I had two more tech here and the first one did nothing, the second Harry came in with a attitude problem touching things he had no business touching, talking to me like I was stupid. When he left he slammed my front door which is glass. I called Jeff and let him know and he doesn't care. He said so he didn't break the glass, so what. I know why the employees have an attitude problem. They learned from Jeff how to be disrespectiful. I still have the rattling sound. I spent a lot of money and it seems they don't want to fix the problem. Call someone else. read more

I wanted my dishwasher installed. Just a dishwasher installed. the woman started trying to sell me an annual contract, gave me this long schpiel about a service contract and was really doing the hard sell. I said I just want my dishwasher installed how much is that? She says it $245 or somewhere around there just to show up and then the install. I said how much is the install. She says "well we don't know what your house is like, we can't tell you how much it is." There was a dishwasher there. the dishwasher was removed. The fittings were all there. No plumbing involved at all except hooking up the dishwasher. She said if I get the service contract (still pushing!) it would be $145 to show up and then the additional amount of the install. RIP OFF COMPANY WHO IS JUST TRYING TO SELL SERVICE CONTRACTS. I found a plumber who did it for $200. I can't stand these companies who try to take advantage of people. Will NEVER call them again. read more
