Gah, this place was annoying. They have these itty bitty shopping carts and there were still places in the produce section that were too small to maneuver through. I was always blocking someone else when I had to leave my cart to grab a sweet potato (withered, by the way, put it back), or seeming to annoy a stock guy who was blocking the sage. A lot of their produce was not the freshest. I get that it's winter but don't put out stuff people aren't going to buy anyway. They did have some nice pieces of fruit sprinkled about for displays, and I took those, so there. I did find a cute non-dairy ice cream that had a bunch of puns on the carton, so there's that. read more

I've made a couple of last minute trips here to pick up groceries. Make sure to check the expiration date on EVERYTHING you buy, because chances are very high it won't be fresh. The meat and fruit will last only days after you buy them regardless of the date. Most of their beer selection was expired by more than a couple months, gross. the only clean grocery store in the area. Key Foods on Jefferson is gross (though, newly opened.) their produce section is pretty decent for Bushwick standards. i like that the veggies are pre-cut and organized for you to buy if you're super lazy or in a hurry to cook something when you get home. it's over-priced, but what can you complain about when someone chops veggies for you? LOL. the aisles are small, but well organized. their meat selections are nah-uh-status. like, you look at the meat (pork, chicken, beef, etc.) and you say, "nah-uh". i'm not buying that nasty looking meat. the seafood selection = NON EXISTENT. not even one piece of fish unless you want dry-salted Bacalao. no thanks. the dairy section is actually pretty good. from fancy yogurts to cheap ass LaYogurt- it's a good selection in my opinion. i actually like that they have 3 different kinds of soy/almond iced coffee brands. you can buy a lotto ticket, scratchies and other necessary pharmacy-esque items but it's SLIM pickin's, folks. read more

A normal neighborhood supermarket. Great beer selection, and they have VERY VANILLA Silk soy milk! I've also seen someone cooking up free food samples a couple of times. Just one problem, and a big one: Not once, not twice, not thrice, but FOUR TIMES we have encountered bad food. The first time, we bought a package of nut and berry mix was full of moths. A few days later, packages of the same product in the store also had moths. PASS. The third time, I bought a frozen pizza that was covered in mold. The fourth time, we saw moldy, gross strawberries. NO THANKS. Nobody is perfect, and I still shop there because it's so close, but I won't be totally surprised if I ever get salmonella... read more

This review is solely based on how rude and awful the cashiers are. I love the selection and set up of the store. However, I try to avoid coming her because of how bad (nonexistent) the customer service is. I always say hi to the cashier. She won't even look at me or acknowledge me in anyway. She just yammers on with her friend at the next register and throws my things around while she bags them. This happens EVERY time I come here. I've even called and complained to management. I've worked in customer service for the last 10 years...customers pay your paycheck, so you need to respect them. If you aren't fit for customer service and don't like even saying hello, then get another job. read more

I never experienced the saddened state of this grocery store as described by previous reviewers so they must have radically changed some things. Though I'm thinking along with the improvements came a hiking of prices since things weren't all that cheap here. When all is said and done, I came here on thanksgiving day for some last-minute breakfast and dinner shopping and left with a bag full of all the groceries I needed for a vegetarian/vegan feast. Produce-wise the fruit is fresh and the veggies are plentiful. You can get your yuca root (an addiction of mine) and your cactus leaves here, too, if it so moves you. Lots of bundles of fresh herbs. The works. Quarters can get a little tight here so suck in that gut and practice your "excuse me shuffle." There are "health food" items mixed in with the regular stuff. They have faux meats and real meats and cheeses and bread. Also they have bulk nuts and some dried fruit in back (use this scale if you need to weigh any of your veggies for a recipe). This place is clean and has all the basics (and then some, especially for 'latin cuisine'). Some of the organization in the aisles is still a little loopy but there is some discernable rhyme and reason to it. Staff was a little snippy but I would be too if I was aisle stocking and being interrupted every two seconds by thanksgiving shoppers. Three and a half stars but rounded up because of the outdated reviews hatin' on the store that saved my tuchus on holiday. If you're in the hood, this place does not suck. read more

The only thing good about this place is that it's cheap. I much prefer Key Foods on Grand, even though it's a little further from my place. The inventory here is not that varied and it's hard to find things. (e.g. the pita bread is randomly placed near the orange juice, nowhere near the bakery section). The meat selection here is terrible - there is absolutely no lean ground beef available - apparently they think no one in the ghetto is trying to eat healthy. I realize that lean meat is a little pricier, but I'm sure some people in this neighborhood wouldn't mind paying extra for lower fat? Strangely, they have a pretty wide selection of different beers - you can a few imports and Sam Adams' seasonal beers here. There is a shelf entirely devoted to Goya products. I'm not sure why they don't just integrate these products with everything else, where they belong? It would be easier to find stuff. The aisles are extremely narrow, which means I'm bumping into people all over the place. It's hard to even think properly in here because it's so crowded and loud. This is a pretty clean, sizable, comprehenive and affordable supermarket. I used to do the bulk of my shopping here when I lived in the area, in addition to produce from The Angel's Fruit Market. They have all the usual groceries you need, but not a bunch of bougie gourmet goods. Surpsingly large beer selection (lots of interesting imports and craft brews). I'm mostly just reviewing this now as I'm bemused how the new Hana Market (open, what, a few weeks?) already has 5 times the reviews of an Associated, and Mr. Kiwi's has 50 after only a couple years. Oh White transplants, you are caricatures of yourselves sometimes. When I grew up, we went to a regular supermarket. Heck, my town only had "regular" supermarkets for that matter. What happened in college that everyone became so addicted to luxury goods that they will only shop at the price-gouging Korean-owned shops that pay top dollar to be next to every L train station, or otherwise insist on hauling groceries all the way from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's on the train? REVISION: Today (march 23rd 2015) they took down the associated sign that was up with the city fresh logo to replace it with "city fresh market" And I supposed this no longer is an associated at all. When I say average local brooklyn I mean the majority of brooklyn not the park slopes and Williamsburg "cool" parts. It was cheap, close, half the produce was rotten and you had to pick up things like goat cheese in Manhattan because associated just has the standards like cheddar, swiss, mozzarella and american...You get the point. Since associated has been remodeled they do have every kind of cheese imaginable and now only 1/5th of the produce is spoiled but the prices are outrageous###!!!!!! Fresh direct has better prices and that is for the fancy folks. The neighborhood is changing and catering to 22 year olds who have a grocery and rent budget far beyond my own. I live in Bushwick because it's cheap or...it used to be. Associated now is overpriced and typically blasts dance music so loud you can't just shop for what you need because the dubstep sirens blare in your brain and you forget the ingredients needed to make grilled cheese. Impeccably clean. Excellent prices on produce. Decent bulk and dry goods selection for its size. Grocery bills come out to within $5 of the average for the area. Best of all, it's not Whole Foods, so you can shop without the attendant anti-labor/Libertarian baggage and the sky-high prices such an embrace of the "invisible hand"** invariably demands. **If you use "the invisible hand of the marketplace" in an argument, there's a 9 out of 10 chance you completely misunderstand Adam Smith and/or have pulled a derp recently, asking the government to keep its government hands off your Medicare. The exterior now has regal aesthetic embellishments--faux Juliet-ish balconies, lanterns, etc. Perhaps it's aping its history as the Starr Theater back in olden-timey days(?). I doubt that but I will say the recent top-to-bottom renovation of this place has widened the aisles, improved the selection and made it a more pleasant experience. The produce is fresher, the sales aren't bad, etc. I'm often surprised by the variety of things they sell, but then occasionally maddened also--wherefore art my Keebler cookies, Juliet?? Yet I often have to run in right before they close at night and they're pretty nice about it. Ultimately, I say "yes." read more

A clean supermarket that has everything you need for reasonable prices (unlike Hana Foods on Wyckoff where all the hipsters go...WAY too overpriced there). There's TONS of staff at Associated so you rarely wait long in line. 1000x better than Key Foods. Go here for the essentials. NOT the meat/fish/etc. Cough up the extra dough for better quality meat. What most people don't know is that this is a hidden gem for craft beers. A very surprising selection of 6 packs and single bottles from all over the US. Many of my friends prefer shopping at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. I like each store for different reasons but even when I lived less than two blocks from a Traders, I chose to shop at the Key Foods down the street. This Associated feels exactly the same, which is what I love about it. It has all the familiar supermarket brands but with certain foods getting their proper national branding (Oscar Meyer probably doesn't make chorizo, but if they did, I'd bet good money that the Mexican or Columbian brand would taste better). Their deli is really tiny, but if you're just trying to make turkey breasts sandwiches, it's no biggie. Like someone else said, the produce section is great and the beer section is surprisingly vast. I just moved into the neighborhood, so there might be better speciality stores around that carry more variety but this place is exactly what you would expect from an all-around neighborhood grocery store. read more

I would say this is one of the best options in the area (which admittedly isn't saying much.) They have a good selection of generic and organic goods, and it always feels clean and nice in here. the produce section is great. (I've tried smaller shops in the area but a lot of the food was bruised or molding.) It still feels sort of overpriced, though NOTHING compared to Hanna Natural which is just a joke. Also always keep an eye on the cashiers, they have on occasion charged me for an item that I didn't actually select. read more

The deli counter is never too crowded, but I would recommend never going here on a Saturday morning. It can be quite hectic. All in all, a good choice for groceries. You get what you see. I moved to Bushwick about 6months ago and waited quite a while before venturing into Associated. I didn't have high hopes. Overall, I have not had any issues with this supermarket. I find the staff to be helpful and pleasant. The store is always clean and well stocked, including a small amount of organic foods. The fruit selection leaves a lot to be desired, but we have bought meat from there and had no issues. Overall, not a bad choice for daily food shopping. read more

OK, 4* was a wee bit generous on my part. In the grand scheme of shitty NYC grocery stores, I still don't think this one is as awful as other reviews have made it out to be, but, well, 4* it ain't. Yes, it's still significantly cheaper than Brooklyn Natural. The vegetable selection isn't bad. I've bought milk and yogurt here and not died. The meat aisle frightens me. The staff is surly at best. They use possibly the flimsiest plastic bags I've ever experienced, which means, they will break before you get home, but the staff gets even more annoyed when you bring your own bag in, but really, don't go here without your own, because your groceries will be on the pavement, even with double bagging their plastic ones. But, really, why bother. Seriously, just get Fresh Direct: they do deliver to Bushwick and their prices are as good as this place. If you run out of milk in between Fresh Direct deliveries, just go to that L Mo place. And the rest of the time eat a lot of Olive Valley falafels or margherita pizzas from Roberta's and give up entirely on cooking. It's working for me! read more

The Associated in Bushwick has seriously improved in the past year. Major renovations have made it much more modern and accessible. But the choices are much better as well. Only decent supermarket that I know about around here (and I live in Bed-Stuy). Unfortunately, as one of the other reviews mentions, they were paying many of their workers just over half of minimum wage for a long time (and not paying the baggers anything at all). And, today, I waited four hours for a delivery from them that I was told would take one hour. So, purchase at your own peril. Unlike some of the racist crap below, however, I won't complain about "having to" listen to Spanish music in a predominately Latino neighborhood that I've chosen to gentrify. read more

I started coming here bc my coveted grocery store on bushwick ave closed. It's a bit of a walk from me (Food bazaar is waaay closer, but walking through the gauntlet of the Myrtle/Broadway intersection sucks!) The selection at this Associated is pretty good! A little crowded at the entrance, where the produce is...But overall it's pretty good! They've got a full deli, with premade items varying from potato and macaroni salads, deserts, etc. They have a good olive selection, nuts and dry-fruit by the pound and a great cheese selection. Checkout is overall pleasant and they have a great bagging area/system. I wish it was closer, but what can ya do. I don't get everyone's beef on the prices...they always have a good deal going on. I get a pound of deli meat for $4.99 and a hefty bag of cashews, almonds hazelnuts and a few Brazil nuts for $6. I can get pita chips from $2.50-$3 a bag depending on the current deal (Brooklyn pita chips, 2 for $5. So delicious!) read more

I heard this place had a remodel and is now quite the market. I checked it out and indeed was impressed. Particularly by the craft beer choices and more so by the beers on tap that you can take away in growlers! HEAVEN! There's also some great prepared foods in the deli! And their coffee choices were astounding. I'm a little "fancy" when it comes to my coffee flavors and they had many great options!! This updated market is a nice addition to the neighborhood. And if you have some beers in mind that you don't see, talk to one of the managers and he'll work on getting it for you. Sundays, you can get a couple of dollars off of your growlers too! Gentrification in the area had caused them to keep up with organic and local trends, they often have stuff that's hard to find even in Manhattan. Nice store, too many toxic and unhealthy products (which, in the USA, lines nearly every grocery store shelf, so thats not much to take points off for). The manager is really nice, and loves to get feedback from customers, and has started to stock a lot more organic foods. I love this supermarket! Just a really nice, clean, and friendly location. The staff is very helpful and I am never at a loss. Whatever I want they will find it with me or if its produce they will find me the best they have. The aisles are clean and wide so shopping is a breeze. This grocery store has completely changed over the last few years. The outside decor is "Arabian Nights" which is confusing for the area, but at least it's an upgrade from the dismal storefront it was. The interior is clean. There's a store cat that finds a way to jump in and out of the ceiling in the back, but that's just free entertainment. The selection of fresh food is getting better and better. The A/C is fantastic when the weather is 90+ degrees outside. Like all Brooklyn/Queens grocery stores, watch to make sure the sales actually ring up when you are checking out. And, they recently added outdoor seating; I'm not sure what to think about that yet. But, I very much appreciate the efforts they have made to add flowers and plants outside of the store. read more

it's a good 24 hour grocery store but some of the prices are wonky so they should fix them.

Its a big step up from having more products but I also feel they stretch themselves a little thin trying to adhere to the demands of the young hipster crowd that lives in the area. They have decent meat selects like most products in the store that are overpriced. Sometimes perishable items are often left out almost a month over there due date. The employees often ignore you and are never nice. The reaction from the guy at the deli for a LB of turkey is like asking him if I can F&*(# his mother. The women at the check out never say hello or even look at you. Granted a few dont speak a lot of English. For those reasons and for the prices I usually go to FoodBazaar up the street. read more
