These other reviews have to be so bogus. Wow! If I could give zero stars, I would. But I'm forced to give one, unfortunately.
I recently left my previous stylist because he is too far from where I live now and I like to keep my money flowing locally. Well, I'm particular about how my hair is cut and I tend to turn to Yelp for recommendations from fellow Yelpers for any new place that I'm looking to find out more about. Low and behold, I find "Associate Barbers" ... which is merely a converted house in the hood that houses "barbers" yet the only difference is those guys actually have the skill and craft to do someone right.
This place is a back room of some tanning salon. I walked in and I checked in with the tanning salon associate then she went to the back to let Adrienne know I was there. Sign number one.
Adrienne comes out from the back and has me follow her through a maze of stand up tanning units then I go into this "barber shop," which is actually the "last door on your left." There is nothing quaint about it and the pictures on Yelp are deceiving. Take away the chairs and the ONE Belmont barber chair and I feel like I'm spending the night in the drunk tank. Talk about atmosphere ... it has no personality. Sign number two.
Side note - I will say that the only good thing about her is the fact that she wanted to double check my meter to make sure I had enough time and not get cited. Trust me, I would've definite rather be cited for parking than mangled by her lack of skill and customer service.
I sit in the chair and I show her a picture of the hair that I've had for the past couple years and she comments on how it will be easy, but first she wants to make my hair look "more masculine, more handsome." I didn't quite know what that meant but I was trying something new and thought I'd just go with it. But then I thought that I should give her more direction since its my first visit and so I did. I told her that I only do scissors all over, including the sides and back and that I didn't want a fade. She said that's what she was going to do to make it "more masculine, more handsome." Sign number three.
Without giving my hair a good examination and seeing how it laid, she started with scissors on my right side. She cut without even touching my hair to see how it was. Sign number four.
I was hoping that those cuts were just to kinda get it down to the length that it should be so I asked if she was just giving me a rough cut before she actually gets in there to get me to the shape that I was searching for. Her answer was this, "Oh, no. This is the cut ... well yeah, it's a rough cut, but 99% of the actual cut." W. T. F!!!! Does anyone even know what that means?!? Sign number five.
She told me that she is going to use the clippers with a comb bc she would poke me if its just scissors. Then why has every other good stylist I've been to been able to use scissors without that dilemma? Holy shit, sign number six and counting.
At this point, I'm already too deep in. She answers her cell phone mid cut and talks for about 50 seconds (50 seconds too long), my sides are shorter than I wanted and she barely even touched the choppy top except to cut a bit here and there. She puts in product to see how it's working out and then she takes me to get shampooed. She put a warm, damp towel over my face while she is washing, which was fine, but as she was drying my hair with a towel, her off hand was on my face with the warm, damp towel and she was pressing ... a little too hard. I felt like I was going to have cornea damage. Sign number seven.
You know no things go to bad that you kinda just want to get it over with so you can move on? That was what I was feeling now. Well, she continued to use clippers with a comb on my sides and some on the back. She shows me how things look and I'm not happy but I don't want to hurt her feelings so I proceed and finish up. Oh yeah, I told her my process of how I do my hair and what product I use and it baffled me that she hadn't heard of Surf Spray, or Sea Salt Spray. Geez, or Sumotech?! What kind of stylist are you? And how did you get 18 people write good things about you and your service? Simply put, you suck and maybe you should go back to whatever you used to do.
It's time to pay and the total is $36. I don't have cash so I ask her if she takes credit cards and she said she was going to have to charge me a $1.00 transaction fee. What kind of bs is that? My bad, I didn't know I was at a corner market and spending less than $5. Sign number eight. I actually gave her a $4 tip and boy was that a mistake.
I get home and my girlfriend tells me that its a little short on the sides. No shit. Then I go in the bathroom and I turn my head 45 degrees and it damn near looks like I'm trying to have a faux hawk. FAWK!! GD man, this person just screwed up my hair and I wonder if she can fix it for me. I call her to tell her my issue and...
