This is such a phenomenal company that really goes over the top with customer service. We had a group of about 20 people come out for the kayak ecotour. The staff was so patient with getting everyone together, and kept smiles on their faces the entire time. All of the gear looked very new and was clean. Our tour guides were able to give good answers to all of our questions, and taught us all how to catch clams! The check in/out process was super easy, and signing up for our tickets online was a piece of cake. We will definitely be making this an annual trip. read more

Got our bikes early and we were off! Super cool trails and beautiful scenery! I recommend doing this early it was very hot! I wish we had brought our bathing suits so we could have enjoyed the beach it was really hot! The bikes worked great and the scenery was beautiful! We did see a couple of horses! THE place to go for kayaking. The wildlife is amazing. I'm sure it's hit & miss, it's unpredictable wildlife after all. We had a great experience. You can book & pay online in advance or just walk in. Located in the Assateague National Seashore Park. They also rent bikes and paddle boards. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. We did 2 hour tandem rental. They showed us the map with details on today's currents, wind, and wildlife spottings. They also provide a waterproof bag for your valueables, as they will get wet. No additional charge! They could easily take advantage of being the only place to get a drink or snack, but they don't. Water, juice, soda, icecream, snacks and souvenirs are all fair prices. We had a great experience and saw so much: horses, egrets, pelicans, gulls, turtles and fish. We loved in and definitely will come again. read more

Scammers. Overcharged for an additional bike rental that has caused massive problems with my credit card. When I called the owner gave the excuse of an "old retired guy" who worked at the place. He was obviouly not retired as he was working, plus pointing out someone's age as an excuse and further telling me that they were a non-profit to absolve themselves of wrong doing. No appology. I have now heard of three other people who have been charged for additional rentals from them and seems to be a pattern for this "non-profit" who preys on out-of-towners. Check your charge statements and avoid these scammers. read more

We read the good reviews and we weren't disappointed. Dave was an excellent kayak guide -- keeping it interesting, and was flexible enough to adapt to our individuals' interests. As a local resident, I wasn't sure I would see or do anything new or different - but it was very different seeing things from the bayside and from a kayak, and getting out several times for activities. My son (20) and I (52) had a great excursion this week. Our guide had lots of great information about the area, and seemed to love his job, which made it even better. Plan on staying at the park in case you don't see any horses on your tour. Also, you do need to pay to get into the park ($26 per car) to access this kayak tour, in addition to the tour price. The service here is unforgettable--really! We visited the National Seashore in July/August of 2018. Being from Indiana, we aren't familiar with the geography of Maryland. So when we wanted to go to the state park and the seashore, we figured we'd walk from the park to the bike rental place on the seashore. Boy howdy did we underestimate! The walk took us over an hour and it was so hot out! The line of cars to get into the national seashore was insane. We followed it into the park and went to Assateague Outfitters to rent bikes. The prices were cheap and the staff was so nice! They helped us get helmets and get the bikes adjusted. They gave us directions through the park, too. The ride was beautiful! You could see all the camping grounds, see the water, and if you were lucky, glimpse some of the wild horses! When when we got back to the shop, we told one of the workers checking us out how we had gotten there and how long it took, he immediately expressed his concern! He ran out to his coworkers and told them he would be right back. This man ended up DRIVING US BACK TO THE STATE PARK! We were so grateful and overwhelmed with the genuine kindness and selflessness he displayed. We offered him money, knowing he was missing work (and having to sit in the long line of cars to get back), but he refused, saying all he wanted in return was a good review. Well, it's over a year later and that experience is still the FIRST I think about when I reminisce on our trip out east. I will never forget the amazing experience and that kind young man. I don't know if he still works there or if he'll ever see this, but seriously, thank you x1,000 to you and everyone working hard out at Assateague Outfitters. The philosophy of ecotourism is simple. Observe, learn, and leave a minimal footprint. So when we killed dozens of fish with a trawling net during this "ecotour," I and my girlfriend were shocked. The idea was that our group would capture a bunch of wildlife, put them in tupperware containers, and the guides would tell us about them. We did this using a trawling net. During an ecotour! Are you kidding me? Dozens of fish were caught in the net. About 20-30 tried to escape through the holes in the netting, but the fish were too large, and they got trapped. Since they got their heads through the holes, we couldn't pull them out backwards because this caused their gills to catch and rip their delicate little heads off. We couldn't push them the rest of the way through the holes either, without crushing them. One of the women on the tour joked, "Oh! I'll leave this part out of my Yelp review!" Seriously, she said that. Lady, this is what Yelp is for. She also exclaimed several times, "Oh, poor fish! I'm so sorry! Oh! Oh gosh!" as we tried to save the tangled fish. Our guide said that this doesn't normally happen. Since SuperFun Eco Tours runs two tours a day, and they've operated for years, I find this very hard to believe. I can't imagine how many animals they've killed over the years. A girl about ten years old was on our tour. She had a typical childlike fascination with the jellyfish that we had caught in our tupperware containers. She would scoop them out of the container and mess with them. Her mother told her to put them down, but the girl would scream and throw a tantrum in front of everybody, and then the mother would let her keep doing it. The girl killed the jellyfish. By the end of the tour, the fragile little creatures were oozing between her fingers, torn to shreds. Being ten years old, she couldn't tell. So she just kept squeezing the corpses, talking to them, making friends with them. Its not her fault, its her parents fault for having no control over her child, and SuperFun's fault for not bringing down the hammer. This is astonishing behavior for an "ecotour." My girlfriend and I are environmentalists and animal lovers, which is why we signed up for this tour in the first place. If you are interested in ecotourism, you should know that you will end up killing animals with SuperFun Eco Tours. I've never done anything like this, but after the tour I called the owner to ask if the trawling net was common procedure and if they could somehow use a net with smaller holes so the fish didn't get tangled and die. I got his voicemail, and asked him to call me back. He never did. I have not notified the Park Service. I'm not sure if I want to go that far yet. But I know that the Park Service would not let these people operate if they knew that the company was killing so many fish. Please, if you care about the environment, or have any interest at all in ecotourism, STAY. AWAY. You will be supporting a business that has no interest whatsoever in protecting the environment. Trawling nets in an eco tour. I have never heard of such a thing. read more

We found these folks on the net while searching for things to do in MD while on a family vacation. Reviews were uniformly positive, and as an activity, educational and literally off the beaten path. Since it entailed a long drive for us and we wanted to make it a worthwhile day trip, they were very accommodating and willing to extend kayak rentals after the tour or facilitate other activities if we wished. We opted for the Discovery Tour, and lucked out with perfect weather and a small tour group of of only one other additional visitor in addition to our two adults and a seven year old. Our guide, Dale, provided us with brief kayaking and safety instruction if you fell out (stand up in the shallows while the rest of the group laughs and take pictures :) Dale led us around the salt marsh pointing out the variety of wildlife present, such as wild horses, egrets, herons, terns, gulls, kingfishers, mussels, crab, etc. Dale provided historical and ecological context for what we were seeing, and patiently entertained numerous additional questions from myself. At one point in the tour, we beached the kayaks on one of the marsh grass stands and the group used small hand nets to see what could be found - tiny blue crab and shrimp in our case. Meanwhile, Dale employed a seine net that we trawled by hand a couple of times to find a larger blue crab and one of the bay's indicator fish species (I think he called it a "silverside"). The activity levels and discourse were well suited to our youngster yet still interesting and enjoyable for the adults. The kid definitely enjoyed himself. Thanks to a fellow Yelper friend -- if it weren't for her review, I wouldn't have known about this business! A parental visit was fast approaching. What to do? Where to take them? I'd already taken them to see pretty much everything I could think of, including Assateague (more than once, as is typical for local people). I brought up the Discovery eco tour as an outing option, and my parents and husband were all for it. What a great tour! Our guide, Tom, was once an Assateague ranger, and now he co-owns SuperFun Eco Tours. He was extremely personable, entertaining, and knowledgeable. He made a big effort to learn everyone's name, and he brought a shy little boy (the only kid on the tour) out of his shell. We got to see Assateague as we'd never seen it before and learned a great deal about the history of the island. Animal and nature lovers will have much to discover and talk about. The kayaks are comfortable and easy to paddle about -- a great way to experience the bay side of Assateague. My only problem with the tour was that my initial call to make reservations went unreturned. I called again the next day, and fortunately, someone answered the phone so we could reserve our spots. Overall, a great experience. Worth every penny. I would recommend this to anyone coming to the beach. Hubby and I are thinking of going on the Sunset tour next year! read more

This is not eco-tourism. The "guides" pulled a trawl net through the water to try to capture organisms to teach about. The principles of eco-tourism are to leave no trace. They captured and killed a bunch of living things. This is lazy. This company needs to learn what eco-tourism is. read more

Fantastic kayak tour leaving right from the campground at Assateague Island National Seashore. Our guides Jake and Justin were super knowledgeable, fun, and got just as excited by the things we found on our trip as we and our kids (9&11) did. The kayaking was pretty mellow, but we got up close and personal with some clams, crabs, fish, and a whole band of horses! This was an awesome way to cap off our trip to the island, and super convenient to our campsite. read more

This was the most fun thing we did on vacation! My husband and I did the kayak tour and had so much fun! Jake and Dave were awesome guides and super cool dudes and very knowledgeable. We went at a nice pace which was good for all ages and skill levels with kayaking and learned a lot about the local wildlife and ecosystem of the Assateague area. We loved hopping out of our kayaks to dig for clams with our feet and catching fish (and releasing them) with the seine net to look at and learn about some of the indigenous fauna. As a part of our recent road trip down the Atlantic Coast my wife and I made a stop at Assateague Island to see the wild horses and check out the salt marshes. We lined up our tour over the phone in advance, and we were glad we did! We had a great time with Tom as our guide - we did the Discovery Tour and saw all sorts of animals and learned a TON about the history of the island. The children on our tour ranged in age from probably 6-10 and they had a great time. Cannot recommend highly enough. They even offer evening tours with wine tastings for adults. Great fun! read more

We went on the Wildlife Discovery Tour led by Dave and Justin today. They were great guides and kept the kayak group's speed at just the right pace. We had a great time as a family, complete with grandparents in our group of 6, so just under half of the tour group was our family. If you are shying away from this because you've never kayaked before, 65+ year old family members were able to do this so you can too. There are several stops along the kayak tour to get out and see some nature up close and even catch some in nets provided to you. Our kids kept saying on the paddle back in that they wanted to do this again. read more

I recently attempted to rent a canoe for back country camping at Assateague Island. SuperFun Eco Tours recently won the Assateague Island vendors contract for the canoe rentals at the Bayside rental shack. Despite my assurances that my group had over 30+ years of canoeing, camping, and on the water experience they refused to rent the canoes to us do to it being "too windy". The winds were about 15 mph with gusts to 20 mph from the west, perpendicular to the planned route of travel. We had previously traveled all the way to Green Run (11 mile paddle) in 25 mph winds with gusts to 30 mph. We had even showed up as soon as the park opened to ensure we would have enough time to make it to our campsite, Pine Tree (5 mile paddle). After we laid out our previous experience, they changed their argument to "we just won this 10 year contract and don't want to risk it" and "we are still negotiating with the government" so we don't want anything to upset those negotiations. We had been planning our canoe trip for 6 months - our biggest risk (so we thought) was weather. It turns out there is a probability less than 100% that SuperFun Eco Tours will even rent to you. In short, Eco Fun Tours was condescending, distrusting of the customer and cared more about their new contract than the customer's wishes or months of planning. They ignored our team's extensive experience in favor of a "gut feeling" about whether to rent to us in the wind conditions and as a result we lost our once a year trip. I highly recommend using anyone else other than SuperFun Eco Tours. I wish that Maryland Coastal Bays was still running the Assateague rental shack. As for us, we will be finding other canoe vendors in the future. read more
