Having a child that is non verbal can be very hard in school settings. CHILD is supportive with his AAC device and any other resources to make our son successful at school. He spent too much time non-educative time in isolation in the Seattle Public Schools and did not learn new skills to help him regulate himself or interact with others. I spent most of every school day at his Seattle elementary school trying to help him get his school work done in his self-contained classroom. The Children's Institute has been a life-saver in terms of allowing him a safe place to learn these skills as well as move on academically. They are able to accept him the way he is and have never called me to come and get him. If he does have outbursts, they are able to staff to allow time for someone to spend time with him out of the classroom without putting him by himself in the "quiet room" Plus, he loves it there! I highly recommend this school if your child is not doing well in a traditional public school due to emotional/behavioral differences.

My high functioning ASD son attended this camp for part of the last two summers (2016 & 2017) when no other camps could take him due to his support needs. While the counselors don't appear to have much (or any) special training for these kids, my son really enjoyed the camp. However, I would like to see the camp try to integrate more therapy into their program, instead it's more like baby sitting. Last summer my son told me he didn't get to go on the daily outing due to misbehavior. Instead he had to stay behind and clean. I was very angry about this and spoke with the director about it. I didn't mind that my son had consequences for his behavior, but I did mind that he was left out of one of the main daily activities. And after talking with the director, they couldn't even tell me what he had done. Overall, if you're desperate for a camp that will take your child due to special needs (as I was), this will suffice. But if you can find (or afford) better, then I would recommend doing so.

Yes, insurance didn't fully cover the cost and we still had to pay quite a bit out of pocket. Yes, initially were on a six months long wait list but due to a cancellation we were able to get him in three months after we initially put our referral in. The doctor (psychologist) that we were paired up with to complete the multi-day test is amazing and she is still an occasional resource for us to this day. She helped introduce us to great providers and more importantly gave us hope that with proper therapy our child will develop to his full capability.

Felicia is aware that many of the parents she serves are immigrants, have low incomes, and/or have few options. She exploits this to take generous state subsidies while being rude and officious to parents without actually addressing their needs. The outdoor play area is very small, mostly made of concrete, and has only a very small play structure and very few toys. The indoor space is maze-like, extremely cramped, and claustrophobic with no natural light. It smells bad. There is minimal actual "learning" done at the daycare; it's staffed by babysitters--many of whom are under 18 and unsupervised. There are no cameras in the facility. The food offered is inadequate and unhealthy.

The staff and faculty are incredibly welcoming, professional, creative, kind and supportive. By design, our son can spend time during the school day on a passion project, which for him is learning chess strategy. We are grateful that he has regular physical education in high school. One of the things she helped me do was regain my sexual confidence after a romantic rejection I took hard. Devi also guided me to regain my inner footing around sexuality. Rather than tell me to just go out and get lucky she supported me in developing my own inner sexual confidence without associating validation from another person. When the student is ready the teacher appears. After I cried out all the tears of feeling rejected as a woman, of rejecting my own femininity, but no thoughts of joining a convent entered my mind. Serendipity stepped in a month later when a friend of mine forwarded a newsletter to me via facebook. It was written by Devi Ward about Tibetan Tantra. Even though she is based in Seattle, Devi is able to teach the practices virtually via Skype. I just knew what healing remedy was that needed and wanted to do. My intuition compelled me to respond. The path was clear and glad I followed my intuition to start the steps towards Tantrika training.

Camp Long is the biggest park in West Seattle most people don't know about. It's not on the water -…read morebut that's not a bad thing. Within the boundaries of the park are miles of trails that most people drive hours out of town to walk on. Not to mention owl spottings, blackberries, bathrooms, cabins to camp in, a natural rock climbing wall and a cool events space. I had dear friends get married here and it felt like they had rented a overnight camp to celebrate - but it was a ten minute walk home. Weeds are a bit overgrown with COVID having Parks only doing essential maintenance but not too bad. Spend an hour or an afternoon here - it's worth it!

I can remember going with the group to camp at the park and fell in love with the beauty of the park and all the fun we had playing games and camping.
