Here are all the things that were great about my experience. 1. I was able to see Dr. Gunnell one day after I called her office. 2. They gave the option to fill out all of the new patient forms online, which is so much faster than filling our forms with a pen. 3. I was given a 3:00 p.m. appointment, I arrived at 2:55 p.m. and by 3:00 they called my name and started. 4. Their office has the latest technology. The dental assistant took an x-ray and then put a camera/probe in my mouth and on the monitor on the wall I could see my broken tooth from the top and side and understand my condition. Clearly with half my tooth gone this was not something any dentist could fix by filling in a small whole or chip. I was going to need a crown. 5. I saw Dr. Gunnell who explained the situation, I was given the option of getting a temporary crown right away or coming back on another day to do the procedure. She was kind, confident, caring, gentle, upbeat, and poised, I knew I wanted her to do the procedure. I was pleasantly relieved to be able to get the temporary crown the same day. 6. Before the procedure began, Dr. Gunnell's assistant gave me a small note that said what the total cost would be, how much my dental insurance would cover, and how much my out-of-pocket costs would be. I did not ask for this information, and oftentimes with medical or dental care, the price is not disclosed until the end. I wish all medical professionals followed this high standard with respect to transparency and disclosure. 7. Dr. Gunnell was very careful that I had the proper amount of anesthesia. 8. I had a crown done many years ago with another great dentist who moved out of the area, it can be a time-consuming procedure. Once Dr. Gunnell started the procedure, she carefully and efficiently completed it. Some dentists are a little slow, some jump from room to room, trying to treat two or three patients simultaneously. Dr. Gunnell is engaged. When she is in the room you have her undivided attention. 9. I was as comfortable as one could be while the team removed my broken filling and prepared the temporary crown. 10. The procedure went well, my temporary crown is comfortable, is pain fee one day after the procedure, and the shape is well matched to the shape of the tooth before it broke. 11. Their office is serious about COVID-19 safety. The staff was masked. Pens after use are moved from a clean pen cup to a used pen cup. 12. The next day her office called to check on how I was doing. While nobody wants to go to the dentist, for dental care I would rather go to Hibiscus Dental than anywhere else.

My initial call was straightforward--the receptionist told me the earliest available appointment for a cleaning was May 7th, which I was perfectly fine with. However, when I called back, (we got disconnected) I was given completely different information by another staff member. I was offered an appointment for the very next day, but with the caveat that a cleaning would not be guaranteed. I was told I would first need X-rays and a full evaluation, and only after that would they determine what type of cleaning I "might" need. I made it clear that I was simply looking for a standard cleaning. I've had extensive recent dental work, including veneers, and I'm very familiar with my dental health. I also work with a cosmetic dentist I trust, so this wasn't a case of neglect or uncertainty on my end. What really raised a red flag for me was being told that even if I waited for the later appointment (May 7th), there was still no guarantee I would actually receive a cleaning during that visit. That's highly unusual. In my experience, both locally and elsewhere, a routine cleaning appointment is just that--scheduled, straightforward, and completed in one visit without unnecessary hurdles. The inconsistency between staff members, combined with the lack of clarity around something as basic as a cleaning, made the process feel unnecessarily complicated. It also gave the impression that the visit could turn into something more than what was initially requested, which felt more like a setup for potential upselling than a patient-centered approach. For patients who simply want a predictable and efficient routine cleaning, this may not be the right fit. Personally, I prefer a dental office that respects both my time and the purpose of my visit.
