Food: Vietnamese/Asian fusion cuisine which is tasty and good but not overwhelming. An interesting variety of starters - worth to try- and fresh drinks. All preconceived notions and misconceptions were proven wrong. Asian fusion CAN be amazing in Berlin! and at Avan, picky eaters are even satisfied with the compact menu by choosing their popular bento box. You can choose up to 3 dishes which are about appetizer portion served in a bamboo basket. It makes for a cool presentation but if you're absolutely starving, just order the full size entree. I HIGHLY recommend getting the clear broth soup, dumplings and the Laotian curry. You won't be disappointed. Save yourself the extra change and skip ordering water since your bento box comes with tea. I ordered an extra drink on the side -- a ginger limeade -- it is as refreshing as it sounds! If you need to munch on something before your actual meal, order an onigiri (vegetarian, duck, fish, etc) it's delivered fresh everyday: the rice is super moist, the filling is just right and the seaweed wrap retains its crispness. Pretty much perfection and worth the €3 price! I love Avan and look forward to returning here next summer!

The starter was very heavy on the avocado and light of salmon. The liked the noodles and beef in the pho, but the broth lacked depth. Whenever I get pho in LA, I'm normally tempted to finish the entire bowl of broth, but not here. Also, they don't provide deep soup spoons so it's much more difficult to just enjoy the broth. The main reason for two stars is because they refused to accept credit card, even though there was no sign anywhere stating cash only. At the front counter there was a small, partially hidden sign that stated cash only if under 15. My total was 22. I didn't argue since I don't speak German. The lady accepting my payment was holding what appeared to be her personal wallet from which she pulled change. It all seemed very shady.

For lunch, it was not crowded at all and we were seated immediately. I loved the atmosphere. It was a mix of retro and jungle explorer. That's how I would describe the interior. The menu was very clear, in both English and German, and they also had specials. I liked the food a lot but the highlight for me was the tea. I ordered the Blooming Jasmine and it was kind of expensive. I think it's a gimmick because you can actually see it bloom in the cup but it tasted so good. That's one of my favorite teas. We could have skipped the calamari appetizer and gone straight to the main dishes because we were full. I would come back to try the different menu items and also the house beer.

The restaurant is quite out dated and looks like it needs a make over but i hoped that the food would be at least worth it which I'm afraid for the price it was a big let down. Bf ordered king crab cocktail which was €10 to which the waiter said they had none but could make it with prawns for him so we thought he would deduct the price a bit since it wasn't what he originally wanted. When the bill came they had charged the full €10 and it was a tiny amount he got. They also served his starter before mine so i had to wait 10mins wondering if mine was going to arrive. Main courses were ok but nothing special and if anything they were far too salty. The portion sizes were huge though and can't complain about that but definitely share one as we couldn't finish ours. The main complaint for us was the final price €50 it was just not worth that for what we got and the waiters made no interaction with us apart from asking what we wanted to order. Felt like we were ripped off. So we won't head back there when in Berlin again.
