I first tried Asia Room in 2019 based on on-line reviews. I thought it "pretty good," but I'm a hard grader when it comes to Chinese food (I live mainly in San Francisco and eat Asian 2-4 times/week). I returned here in July 2021 because I was in the neighborhood, being frustrated that my intended restaurant was closed. Asia Room impressed me even more the second time. I got the slightly (one euro) more expensive set lunch menu. I started with the fried rolls (I opted for chicken) accompanied by lettuce and mint and a traditional dipping sauce. I was hungry, and to be honest, rolls usually don't merit much attention other than staving off hunger until the main dish arrives. These rolls were different. They are heftier -- with a higher percentage of protein packed into them. And they were delicious. I immediately moved into "conservation mode," savoring each bite (3 small bites per roll). I asked the waiter if they were house-made. He replied (in French) that "everything is house-made." The main dish came next -- spicy beef, with a side bowl of rice. The waiter warned me that the dish was "piquant" (spicy) and I reassured him that was OK -- I'm a Texas native. He wasn't joking. The beef was okay quality and there was a fair amount of what I think was cabbage, lending a certain kimchi quality to the dish (this, for me, is a good thing). In addition, there were (I'm guessing) mung bean sprouts, which were plentiful and offered a tiny respite from the dish's spiciness. I had initially guessed that the small-ish bowl of rice wouldn't be enough; I was wrong. I didn't finish it. The main dish had a lot of broth, which was delicious when mixed with the rice. At €15, I thought that the meal was a good value (on a scale of "miserable-poor-fair-good-excellent-astonishing"). I had a couple of beers that were an additional cost. The room is unexceptional. The service was casual but sufficient (the young man was attentive to his cell phone). I was the only customer at noon, although an Asian couple arrived as I was leaving. I definitely will return. read more
