Cheeseburger meal with a poutine saucisses...
    Des T.

This was my first time trying Chez Ashton after living in Quebec for almost two years. I didn't have high expectations because I know enough locals who have told me that contrary to its reputation and hype, Chez Ashton is NOT the best poutine in Quebec City. I ordered a cheeseburger and a poutine saucisses meal... The burger was good... Nothing exceptional at all... Very basic. Their "rosé" sauce which they up-sold me on tasted like nothing but a sweeter mayo. And as for the poutine... I'm not too crazy about how thick the sausages are cut... I would prefer a smaller cut in order to be able to have more bites of poutine with sausage.. Rather than having to cut the sausage myself... Yes I'm a very specific eater! The fries, gravy and cheese were all good. I give them just two starts because I expect more from a huge chain like Ashton....

24 hours place! The poutine here is just decent. In our opinion, the gravy isn't that flavorful & it needs more cheese curds. Overall, it's decent, it's not bad. Generous portion! Service was decent.

I am more than happy to write the first review of this patisserie...I'm honored. We noticed it on…read morethe way into town, but didn't make special note of it from the outside since it was a basic storefront and there are so many patisseries around. As we walked down Rue St. Jean the next day, we were looking for some lunch. After checking out a few places, we walked by Simon Patisserie and decided to check it out. It really is a throwback...and feels like a old bakery I used to walk in with my grandfather 40 years ago as a little kid in Philadelphia. So, it immediately evoked wonderful memories. That said, the goods still have to stand up to the test...and they did. This place was not only a patisserie, but had varied hot items for lunch that they make on-site. We had beef stroganoff, potato/onion pastry puff, chicken & Mac, eclair, pastry with cream and raspberry filling, almond filled pastry, pasta and veggies. ALL of them were a 5! In fact, to demonstrate how good they were...on our way out of town the next day we stopped here to get some baked goods to bring back for family...two days later. We kept them "on ice" and out of the heat for two days, even bringing them with us out of the car so they wouldn't spoil. Of course, they would never be as good as freshly made, but they made it back to the delight of everyone! If you go, say hello to Joanne and Joanne (yes, two of them named that) and say hello for us. :-)

We sampled a bunch of different menu items. The classic beef tartare, one of the listed favourites,…read morecan be divisive and not for everyone. Personally, it was a treat for me trying out something different, but I do not think everyone would appreciate its almost raw meat and liver-like texture. The Tartare comes with fries, a salad, and crouton to round up the order. We upgraded the side of fries that came with the Tartare into their Tout Cochon poutine. I was happy with that option that way I was able to sample their house poutine without needing to dedicate a full meal order for it. I can say this was among the best poutines I have had. The gravy was rich and flavourful. The poutine was also loaded with a variety of different proteins like the Gaspor farm ham and the bacon-wrapped sausage. The perron cheese curds also perfectly topped off the whole dish. Our last order was the Quebec pork chop marinated and grilled with maple and tamari. It was served with apple chutney, sweet potato mash, and seasonal vegetables. It is exactly as you would expect with the ingredient details of the dish's name. You get a lot of different flavour profiles and textures with the meal order. Some saltiness with the pork chop then some sweetness with the apple chutney. Meaty tenderness with the pork chop, mushiness with the potato mash, and then some slightly crunchiness with the seasonal vegetables. We dined on Sunday lunchtime the day before Family Day. There were people waiting to be seated by the time we arrived, but fortunately our group of only 2 people has a table spot available so did not need to wait. We were led down flights of stairs to the lower floor which was level with the street below. The whole place with its classic walls and decor exudes with classic charm.

We made a reservation for a table for 2 for a lunch on Christmas Day. We arrived 10 minutes early…read moreand were still immediately seated on a table overlooking the river. The hostess who seated us could not have been nicer. The restaurant has a nice ambience and vibe. It is fancy without being pretentious. They had holiday special drinks and we ordered the Rudolph Punch and Snowbank lift. Both drinks were Christmasy and the right amount of boozy (not very boozy). I don't recall the drink ingredients, but they tasted amazing. I had also requested a hot water as we had walked in the Quebec cold. Hot water was served with a cinnamon stick and lemon wedges, which was a nice touch. We ordered soup of the day (creamy asparagus with goat cheese) and the French onion cheese. Both soups tasted great. The French onion soup had a nice old fashioned presentation and came on a hot plate and in a hot bowl. Normally we would have shared an enteré after having a soup each, but because we were having a good time and did not mind spending more time in the warm restaurant with a view of the ferries crossing the river, we ordered an enteré each - GOAT CHEESE PUFF PASTRY and RICOTTA RAVIOLI. Both dishes tasted great and had excellent presentation. The cheese puff pastry was set on a good amount of salad with beets and greens. Ravioli similarly had a good amount of olives, cheese and tomato in the sauce. Lastly we shared an EARL GREY CRÈME BRÛLÉE. Again both the presentation and taste were excellent. The service throughout was on point - did not keep us waiting, and never made us feel rushed. I would highly recommend visiting this place when on a trip to Quebec City and making a reservation if at all possible.

The orchard salad was good, the peaches were tasty and the dressing they used was good for the lettuce and the peaches. The flank steak was grilled perfectly too a medium rare as what we wanted. And my seafood cassolette was delicious, this one has lobster crab ravioli with pieces of shrimp in a clam chowder base. The raw oysters were not bad, the size was around medium. Service was excellent, waiter was attentive and our food arrived not too long. While waiting for our food we enjoyed watching the flurries/ snow and saw some people playing with it. The ambiance was on the romantic side, low/ dim lights, and almost like a formal clothes kinda restaurant. But of course it's in the expensive side. This restaurant is inside the Fairmont Frontenac/ Quebec City.
