I am extremely disappointed with the customer service I received from this company. Would have liked to have given you my business of $3,800 to repair my chimney, however I will take my business somewhere I likely won't be insulted by your customer service rep. I called to simply request an inspection of my chimney for penetrations. At no point during the conversation did the customer service rep explain that there were different levels of inspections ranging from $0 to $100+ (depending how in-depth it is). She simply asked for my information, I gave a description the concerns and it was scheduled. I work as a customer service supervisor and have called services many times to ask for an inspection; and have always been told the level of services they offer if it varies. Anyway the tech showed up and did an inspection then asked for payment to my surprise of $100. I paid him of course, but I called back and spoke with the original representative and she proceeds to tell me that because "I sounded like I knew what I was talking about when I asked for an inspection, she assumed I knew there was a charge! Also that I sounded like a good customer originally, but obviously not." Well sounds like their customer service reps obviously lack basic customer service skills. Because insulting your prospective client is not good business and assuming that your new prospective customer knows information you have not disclosed is just ignorant. read more

Extremely disappointed. We had them come out to inspect our chimney on our house which we had just bought and they quoted us with almost $4,000 worth of work. Decided to get a second opinion from another professional place and they told us it was one of the best, most well built fireplaces he's ever seen. Just needed a cleaning and a new chimney cap. We even went over all of the things Ashmaster had told us was wrong and he checked it all out and it was perfect. So disappointing. read more

I received a coupon in one of those weekly mailer packs for $90 cleaning. First off they inspected my chimney and told me they couldn't clean it because the stove had been installed incorrectly, and that the chimney had not been cleaned properly before installation. The also said there was brick damage and that the crown on the roof was cracked. They quoted me @$1,400 to remove the stove, clean it, put stove back and rebuild brickwork. They quoted me $290 to fix the crown. I honestly think they may have broken the crown, as there was no damage up there when our house was inspected, only a few months before. After hiring a another company to do another inspection, they cleaned the chimney just fine and said there was nothing else wrong with it except the damaged crown which was fixed for less than the Ashmasters quote. in the end, I got charged $90 for work they said they could not do. More or less they are out to scam you, ands while they say the offer free estimates, i some how feel i got duped into paying $90 for an estimate. After some further online research, there are many companies that are out to scam you when they offer $75/90 cleanings and then tell you all the other crap that wrong with the chimney. I got scammed, don't let that happen to you. read more

I strongly recommend AGAINST using this company. We hired them to fix a chimney problem. First round: full inspection and repair, but no result. Second attempt, no improvement (and part of first repair broken). Third attempt, no success. By now I have given them over 4000$. Then I ask them to please come back and look again what needs to be done. The guy on the phone tells me you need a full inspection so we can tell what's wrong, at a cost of 100$ which we can deduct from the cost of further repair. When I then say sorry, you should come back for no cost since (1) you already did an inspection to begin with, and (2) I have already paid you over 4000$, the guy says I should not be rude and obviously need to better understand the chimney business: no company guarantees results and service calls cost what they cost. At which point I decide, with a heavy heart, that I'm done with them--and hope that what they say about the chimney business ain't really so.... read more

I had a competitor come in with a quote to line my chimney on a house I purchased. The quote looked suspiciously high so I called Ashmasters on a friend's recommendation. I hired this company over 15 years ago to install a chimney cap and put a wood stove tube into my wood stove. I had to have some work done the other day with my chimney and found out that they had NEVER connected to tube to my wood stove. It was 3 feet short!!!! So all these years I had no idea. Water heater broke. The plumber called these guys in to inspect and they said I needed an additional $2200 in work on lining my chimney. Called another plumber who took a look and said it was fine. I'm not sure how they can stay in business much longer by recommending unnecessary work and, thus, violating the consumer's trust. Two years ago I had almost exactly the same experience. They told me the stove needed to be replaced, said I had brick damage and wrote up a 1000.00+ quote. The difference was that they didn't damage my crown and they vacuumed out the fireplace so I did get something for the money. This company was called to provide a level II camera review of our chimney. The office personnel were courteous and helpful. Dave and his assistant were courteous and wore shoe protectors while inside the home. They called on the day of the service, provided an estimate of arrival and were on time. They provided an analysis of the chimney via camera with me present, so I was able to see the inside with my own eyes. They walked me through the entire process and answered many of my questions on site. They provided an analysis receipt and photographs of the inside of the chimney. No problems were identified. Additionally, they inspected the chimney on the exterior of the home and when requested they even provided a much-needed paint seal on the exterior. They provided the exact service that was requested, and no issues were experienced throughout the process--beginning with the call to the office. It unfortunately is always a challenge to find good companies to place your trust. I will return to this one and Dave specifically to service my chimney in the future. Thank you. read more

We hired this company to inspect and clean our chimney because they had an "A" on Angie's List and also had a $75 coupon in a local mailer. They told us that we couldn't use either one of our fireplaces, that they needed to be relined, and then left our chimney full of insulation that the previous owner had stuffed up there. read more

We've used Ashmasters for the last 8 years or so to clean our chimney. They offer a very low price for chimney sweeping mainly as a way to get in the door and up-sell more involved services and repairs. One year, they talked us into repointing and repairing the masonry on our walkway. We went with them over other companies only because they offered a 5 year warranty on this work. There was no miscommunication or ambiguity because I was concerned that the mortar would crack again and specifically asked about this risk. The owner, Kevin, assured me that if the mortar started cracking within 5 years, they'd be back out to repair. For the first year or two, it looked great. But after 4 years, it was crumbling again, so we called them out. Kevin returned and informed me that not only was there no warranty, but claimed that Ashmasters had never done the work in question in the first place. He told me I was trying to swindle and "gouge" him. When I handed him the original work order he'd written describing the work they'd done, he did not acknowledge or apologize. He just repeated sternly, "I am not going to redo your walk" and literally drove out of our driveway while we were still talking to him. We stood there incredulous at what had just occurred. We are filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Beware of this dishonest and unprofessional company that doesn't stand behind its word even if it's in writing. OK... I have rewritten my previously scathing review. See below. Ashmasters is a chimney sweep. Chimney sweeps have a notorious reputations for being scammers and rip-offs. The nice way of putting this review is that Ashmasters did not go out of their way to change this perception of the profession. I received several quotes from several companies for a simple removal and replacement of my chimney crowns. All of the companies made HUGE NoVA markups, and I contemplated for several days whether to just do the work myself, seeing as there is more than enough information on the web to do just that. My standards must be higher than most, because the quality and time required to do the work that I would have done to make the chimney crowns would have been significantly more time consuming (framing, rebar, securing, etc). I just assumed this would be the work that would be done, and that was my first mistake. Because I don't have much free time, I had Ashmasters schedule work. I called them twice asking questions about the work, because my expectation and what they were saying were not lining up. On top of that, I was talked down to and made to feel stupid for asking questions. This was the first time I had seen anything but kindness from them. Strike one. Additionally, I wanted to be sure that the old crowns (or what resembled crowns) would be removed. I was assured they would be. Strike two came when they called to do the work earlier than they expected due to cancellation. I changed some scheduling around because I was not going to be home, which was no problem according to them... I checked TWICE. They never showed, and said it was because I was not home. Strike two. Finally, the day of the work, the crew showed up and all were very kind and communicative. When I went out to check on how they were doing (a half hour later) they were finishing up concreting the crowns, and I could see my old crowns still underneath the new! I was told they weren't "worth" taking off and taking them off "would have caused more damage than it was worth". What? Translation: we are too lazy to do the work we said we would. Strike three. I paid a HUGE bill for Ashmasters to essentially slap an uneven layer of concrete on top of what was there and put caps on my flues. Cost? Don't ask... it was over a grand. I called to complain and was again talked down to. Unfortunately, the statement of work was worded just so that I could not do much about getting money back. This brings me back to the reputation of chimney sweeps. Do yourself a favor and research heavily before doing masonry work or crowns... you can probably do it yourself and I wish I had. On a positive note, there is a 5-year warranty included, which from the looks of the work, I will probably need. Ashmasters is very nice until you ask questions, then the attitude changes. We called for a routine chimney sweep but it was determined that there was a build up of creosote that needed to be eliminated so as not to risk a chimney fire. When the crew showed up, they protected our floors, did the job and cleaned up when they were done. Now we can continue to enjoy our fireplace without the worry of an ember igniting the creosote! There was a huge miscommunication between the person who made my appointment and the person who came out, the listed me for a inspection and a cleaning when I told them that the fireplace hasnt been used in years and the flu (only accessible INSIDE the house) was rusted shut, they told me if the person had to come inside the home that it was considered a inspection,and cost me $50 they told me that my fireplace was going to need a insert to work again because it was so messed up, they told me also that the out side brick needed to be replaced which they didn't, and im not sure how they could tell what needed to be done, they did NOT even go on the roof to look. The customer service woman at the office was extremely rude telling me if they had to go inside that it was considered a inspection. and that tough cookies they have to charge me.
