I am about to move out to relocate after staying here through 3 years of law school, so figured I would leave a review after reviews helped me decide on a new apartment. Autumn Woods is a great place to live, and was perfect for me through grad school. It is peaceful, well-kept, clean, manicured, etc. The best part of the complex is the people. In the management team, La Shawn and Lisa are just the absolute best. They are friendly and attentive, and I have enjoyed their company occasionally when I stop by the office. I have never once experienced any bit of rudeness from anyone at Autumn Woods. The apartments themselves are not the latest greatest top notch of everything, but everything works and looks nice, and the maintenance team has been great to work with when things stop working. When the apartment over mine flooded and water came in through my roof while I was away for the summer, the maintenance team took care of the issue fairly quickly and Lisa kept me well-informed of their progress while I was away. I have especially enjoyed my balcony overlooking the wooded area at the back of the complex, it's a great place to find some peace and study amid fresh air. My only complaint (I have to say something to prove I wasn't bribed!) is that the trash fees amount to around $60/month, which includes valet trash and the cost of disposal itself. This is pretty steep compared to what I've seen in other communities. Other than that, I truly haven't had any issues. If you're looking in the area, come by and meet Lisa or La Shawn and take a quick tour. If you like what you see, I definitely recommend staying here. I decided on this place after Lisa was so kind and professional giving me a walk-in tour, assuming that this interaction (and Lisa!) reflected the culture here. I was not disappointed! I never had any issues with neighbors here, literally none. I also never saw any undergraduates, mostly professionals and some grad students, some families. I lived at the back of the complex facing Food Lion, and fairly close to it, but I've rarely been disturbed by noise from over there. Maybe I got used to it, but it certainly wasn't anything dramatic (and I'm also a light sleeper if that helps)! Again, I never had any issues at all with the management and staff. The maintenance folks are going around the apartments all the time, and at least some of the office folks are always in the office if I need them. Again, never an issue. My concerns were always taken care of quickly, no issues at all. Maybe I'm naive or something but I don't think the rent is overpriced for the area. Either way, compared to what I've seen of similar apartments, I'd stick with this one. I also never had any issues with noise from neighbors, including in the common areas. Since James's review, management has repainted and spruced up the exteriors of everything as well.

Not only is it included in our rent, I've submitted a work order at least 6 times for terminex and they've come multiple times. We are not dirty people. We take out the trash every night, don't have dirty dishes, etc. the amount of roaches and "water bugs" I've seen is absolutely insane. I got tired of waking up and seeing a new friend so I called the front office and they told me "don't worry! They don't bite!"...... not at all what I want to hear. We have had this issue for some time, so we have been overly cautious about opening doors, wiping everything down, anything you can think of. After month 3 we even bought our own roach traps. I understand it's getting hotter and we have trees on the property. I've lived in an older apartment before and I understand the occasional water bugs. This is not that.

It was old and had its character, but it was comfortable and affordable. However, as time went on my displeasure with the apartment increased. First, the bugs. I would place down sticky traps and they would be full within a week. Bugs would constantly enter my apartment and giant cockroaches became a daily occurrence. Second, the pool was closed for two entire summers and the gym was closed for months during my residence with no reduction in rent to account for the loss of amenities. I had a unit near the leasing office, and frequently felt watched. I received emails accusing me of smoking and having a dog of which I had done neither. They did catch me one day with a citronella candle on my porch to keep away the many bugs and I received a rude email about it. I highly doubt they treated those on the other side of my building facing the street in this manner. I will also add that even though I did not have a dog, there was a ton of black dog hair stuck in the paint from the previous tenant and this caused my sister's allergies to be really bad when she came to visit me. The final straw was when I returned from a vacation to find my apartment full of mold. I understand that accidents happen, however, when I approached the leasing office about this issue they claimed that there was a leak in the apartment above mine and someone checked on my apartment and said it was fine. I believe this to be a lie because I was never notified that there was a leak or that anyone was going to enter my apartment. To resolve this, they sent in the maintenance man with a dish rag and spray bottle of bleach. No further remediation was done and much of the cleanup fell onto myself and my partner (see photos). When I asked the office for help relocating to a hotel room, I was told to tell my renters insurance and have them deal with it. Management was usually polite and maintenance always responded quickly, however nothing was ever really done to justify the $50-$100 increase in monthly rent every year. When I moved out, they had the audacity to charge me over $200 for a stain on the 40 year old counter top. I would highly discourage anyone from renting from poplar place.

We went up to see if we could view the apartments before applying or signing a lease. It took 30 minutes for someone to come to the door when it said they were open. We were then told that we couldn't tour an apartment because we didn't have an appointment. We had viewed other places that day with no appointment. It was our mistake for signing the lease... - Fast forward to July 2022 when we moved in. The carpets were gross, the appliances were dirty and from the 80s. The walls weren't painted etc. our stove/oven was broken and it took 3 months to get a new one. - The floors were sinking. (We were on the third floor) there were slopes and holes and they just covered it with carpet. After bringing it to their attention, we were told "it's just the floors settling). Our neighbor below us at the time, her ceiling was cracking in the spots/location that our floor was sloping. - Our AC worked maybe 2 months total out of the 8 months that we stayed in this apartment. - So many roaches. - You are unable to hook your washer and dryer up by yourself as they state "the connectors are old so we have our maintenance connector them". We had maintenance connect them and they hooked the water lines up backwards. We only had hot water which destroyed the majority of our clothes. - The blinds when we moved in were broken. We complained nothing was done. Finally, they replaced them and tried to charge us for them. (They are the cheap plastic blinds) Their maintenance guy lied and stated he saw my 4 pound 3 month old puppy break them. Fast forward to when we moved out, they tried to charge us again for blinds ($50). We called numerous times to talk to them with no response. We called corporate no response. They sent it to collections. We stated what happened they took the blinds off the price and we paid for our water bill. - I got bit by a neighbors dog when walking to my apartment. - The area is not safe. You hear gunshots. Multiple strange vehicles that would park and never get out. Told them I was putting a ring door bell up. No holes it attached to the door in a case. Was told no it's a fire hazard. This is your warning do not rent from Poplar Place. We got over charged ($1800 per month) for a run down not updated apartment (2 bedroom 2 bathroom) that was infested with bugs. There are so many other options for great apartments but this isn't one of them. Look elsewhere. First 4 pictures are when we first moved in. (I had already cleaned the stove. The rest are when we left. Blinds clearly not broken.

Why would I deal with loud neighbors, ugly parking lots, and no privacy when after all my experiences I now know how to find a great house for a great deal? Well... vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, and two months of free rent, that's why. Don't get me wrong, this apartment complex is still an apartment complex. That means car alarms going off, dumpster fires, weird neighbors, housing managers that won't deal with a copperhead living right outside your front door, and of course loud music from time to time. BUT if you harass the building manager enough, he'll come decapitate the copperhead with a old dull ninja sword you have lying around the house. Yes, this really happened.

It was a bit risky since you never know if you'll like your landlord or if the maintenance people will be cool. Ken, our landlord is the best! He's friendly, very helpful, and he does a great job managing the properties. Mike and Bill have been our maintenance guys since moving in and they've been the best. They fix things very quickly and go above and beyond! The staff here always talks to us and asks about our family, they seriously almost feel like family themselves. Rent here is the cheapest you'll find in Carrboro for what you get-from my research anyway. They offer first, second and third floor apartments, but also offer villa style ones where you don't have anyone above or under you! They rent washer and dryers for $45 a month and they'll fix them if they have any problems. Or you can bring your own, but you're responsible if they break. They have one and two bedroom apartments. These are located on the J route, you're close to campus, the high school, Franklin Street, etc. These are great for college students, families starting out, and more-I highly recommend Rock Creek!
