After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

LED lights and black\chrome fittings are not my thing - I prefer the old back street curry house place. Having said all that you will notice the 4 stars, the reason for that is very good food and great service. Yes it was a tuesday night, yes there was perhaps 5 other tables taken but I think you can tell when a place cares about its customers and wants to see those customers become regulars. Quick pint at the bar and explanation that one of the guys in our group hadnt had Indian food much so would want a very mild meal. We had usual papad and dips - OK Chicken and Lamb tikka, Dhall soup - very good. Chicken Ceylon (madras style but with more coconut and lots of black pepper) Chicken Passada ( for the newbie) Chicken Rogan 3 rice 2 Naan - 1 stuffed paratha Channa massala , Saag Aloo 6 pints 3 large brandies All very good, plenty of meat, all tasted fresh. Service was great - including ordering a cab for us. Total bill came out at £120 with tip. I thought good value. There are loads of curry houses in Hull but if you are in this area and dont have one recomended to you then you could do a lot worse than the Raj Pavilion.

Rays Place - Great food, great service, great price. What more could you ask for. Would throughly recommend to anyone.

However I was in Pave with some customers and the barman recommended Rays as the best curry house in the area. It's being your own booze and has a 24 hour little Sainsbury next door so no worries there. The decor and general feeling is like the 70's style curry houses I first started going to as a kid. It made me feel a little nostalgic to be honest. Service was good and the food just as good. There was 5 of us and all agreed great curry. The Madras I had was at the hotter end of most restaurants I have been in recently either that or its time to upgrade to Vindaloo!! I'm back in Hull this weekend for the boxing and I might just end in here again.

I dont even know what time this place closes as it always seems to be open. The have a large range of curries - obviously the very popular korma and tikka massarla and my particular favourite Biryimi!! The fact that you can take your own alcohol in means that with the 24hr local sainburys means this makes it a very cheap meal! The restaurant is only small but this is not a problem as it's still nice with a good atmosphere and friendly staff - it also means you dont have that long a wait!

The chicken tikka butter masala is rich, balanced, and deeply comforting, layered with flavor rather than heat for heat's sake. The meat samosas arrive perfectly crisp with a spiced filling that tastes fresh and intentional, not mass produced. The mixed kebabs are the real showstopper, tender, smoky, and seasoned with confidence. Service is warm, polished, and unhurried, exactly how a proper dining experience should feel. This is classic Indian cuisine done right, and one of the finest Indian restaurants not just in Cleethorpes, but across Lincolnshire.

They offer free delivery within 3 miles, and the prices are quite reasonable. I just moved in next door and will be making my way through the menu in the weeks to come. That, and it looks like I have to introduce Cleethorpes to yelp...or is it yelp to Cleethorpes? It's nice to move to a new city and get to put it on the yelp map. Thus far I've had the vindaloo, balti, masala, korma and a few takes on their naan. All was very good. The vindaloo is listed as 5 stars on heat, but I found that it wasn't very hot at all. My (American) palate may be tempered when it comes to heat however. I've had some pretty hot Thai and Mexican food in my day. The balti was my favorite thus far, with quite a complex flavor and nice chunks of vegetables to go along with the meat. I'm still a rookie when it comes to Indian food, but I'm learning fast and will shed that label soon enough. I'm making my rounds to some of the other Indian restaurants in the area.
