Great place to donate items. I called beforehand and made sure that they were open and was able to…read moredonate stuff. The whole process was easy. You enter through their garage, where a friendly security guard helps guide you through the process. They also provide donation receipts if needed. They accept almost everything, including men's and women's clothing, books, shoes, and unbroken kitchenware. The only items they don't accept are children's clothing. The security guard let us know that the donations go directly to people experiencing homelessness, and there is also a women's recovery center upstairs that many of the items support. It feels much better donating here compared to street donation bins that often get tampered with. Highly recommend donating here if you're looking for a meaningful place to give back and wanting to donate your items.

Comic Cure had a comedy show at YWCA of Glendale tonight. It was a fundraiser to shed awareness on…read morethe topic domestic violence. The majority of the efforts by this YWCA location's to stop racism and assist women in creating better environments for themselves. I purchased my ticket on EventBrite. What I learned from attending this event? YWCA believes that a love relationship created between any type of couple (hetro, homo, tran, etc...) should be harmonious or beneficial for both parties, especially if children are involved. So toxic relationships should go through breakups, which can be healthy. And it can happen more than once. It's not something to be ashamed about. Also, they believe that children should be taught this fact in their formative years, when they learn about love. The theme of the show was 'Breakup Letters'. There were 23 or 24 comedians that read letters about their breakup experiences. Creative. Inventive. Sad. Funny. The headliner was Comedian and Actor, Johnathan Kite. He was a complete riot. It was a nice turn out of people. Big Mama's & Papa's Pizzeria sponsored the event. The $5 donation (Cash Only) for drinks and pizza was donated to the YWCA's Domestic Violence Program. Also, they distributed handouts about the Elton John Foundation supporting people to invest in the HIV Vaccination. So you can sleep with HIV/AIDS and not get infected. It's covered by insurance companies. America has been undergoing changes that effects everyone. If you want to find out more... One thing that doesn't seem to be well known about Catholic Charities is that before requesting…read moreemergency rent assistance, you need to have a minimum income clearly evident within the two months prior to requesting. I left my job at the beginning of the year due to health issues: I'm 56 years old, partially handicapped and I also have health issues that unless I take real care, can shut me down entirely. I was working in a field with high stress, required to keep up with healthy 20-year-olds, but I wasn't unhealthy enough to be deemed "federally" disabled. Once I left, I was working freelance. I was doing illustrations, some typing, some transcriptions. It was going okay until the latter end of the year when I started focusing on a commision that took two months, which ended up not being paid. Because I had focused all my time on the commission (which included 20 illustrations), I had those months without an income save for a few dollars here and there. Some of these were under-the-table jobs for instant cash, but in terms of showable income, I had none. When I applied, that was an issue. As advised by a clinic social worker when I needed emergency care, I applied for unemployment with the idea that because there had been a significant amount of time since working, they may approve me. This wasn't the case. As was advised by Catholic Charities, I waited for a 3-day notice, then took my paperwork on to them. Explaining the proof of income I did have was disheartening because my bank account and paypals weren't showing income in the right places. Although I was still in a situation of becoming homeless without assistance, the rule however isn't flexible. People don't seem to be aware that this exists and is a hard and fast rule. I am trying to appeal still because I don't have a place to go once I do leave my apartment. I'm reaching out to different social service networks, but have yet to find one that might be able to help. Catholic Charities in my area seems to be an individual entity and there are no referrals they can provide. I was asked to bring in December proof of income, which I don't have since the tasks I am able to do have not yet sold. We'll see, but when seeking help, do be advised that you cannot be in a position of "destitution." People should be aware of this BEFORE GOING IN.

I drove all the way to Glendale for a volunteer orientation, obtained letters of reference, filled out all the paperwork, then never got a response. The whole process was a total waste of time. PLUS I learned that they only take "refugees" who have a sponsor in Los Angeles. Someone in a refugee camp who has lost all their family will be completely denied by the IRC.

I felt very welcome and I know it is a great place to be of service. They are involved in many worthwhile community ministries that I enjoy like feeding the homeless, providing shelter, building homes in Tijuana, etc. I know this because they have pictures of their many ministries in the narthex. When I lived at PATH, I was there for two years. I could have stayed longer, but over time, I…read morestarted feeling mentally and emotionally uncomfortable because I was going through some serious internal struggles. Around that time, someone bought me a ticket to visit my adopted daughter--someone I had longed to see but never got the chance to. Despite everything, my experience at PATH was one of the best shelter experiences I've ever had. There were so many kind and caring people there. Of course, it wasn't perfect--I also encountered a few staff members who didn't seem to have the best attitude about their jobs, which made certain moments unpleasant. But at the end of the day, a shelter is still a business, and good customer service should always be a priority. Still, I truly felt at home. The Christmas parties were beautiful, they gave us an abundance of clothes, and the food--honestly--was the best I've ever had at any shelter.

Last Saturday the ministry I work for came in and volunteered at their "clothing store" to help…read morethose affected by the Los Angeles fires, and it was amazing! I had never heard of this place before but it's truly an amazing place! The name is very fitting for the amazing work that is done here. Their store was filled with brand new items (many popular brands) fitting every style and size. They also include necessities such as backpacks, shoes, toilet paper, etc and the rule is YOU CAN TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU NEED! Usually there's a limit but not here, they provide you with trash bags and you can take as much as needed. They also have an area for groceries, toys, hot food, and so much more! It was truly amazing working here and seeing so many families being helped. There were so many volunteers and so much resources being passed out, I've never see anything like it. I recommend this place for anyone who is having a tough time, facing homelessness, job loss, etc to seek this place out. They also help with finding housing and schooling. Such a valuable place to the city of Los Angeles!

But Ruben was beyond amazing. He answered all our questions and gave us information about how Dream Center gives back to the community. It really made me happy to know that dad's old clothes were going to a place that give away the clothes and not sell them. Thank you Ruben for making our morning so amazing. Especially after driving in 1.5 hours of traffic :P
