I love a good farmer's market. However, I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't been to one of the…read moreclosest ones to me in a couple of years. My my what a difference a few years makes! The last time I was there the market was on the south side of Michigan Ave. They had a decent selection of fruit and veggie vendors and a few baked goods and that was it. Now it's a great place to spend an afternoon and get nearly everything you need for your home. Eggs? They've got em. Meat? Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, even bison are all represented at one of the booths. Plenty of fruits and veggies, of course. Zingerman's is on hand with a lovely selection of cheeses and now--popsicles! Mosey on over to the Treat Dreams booth and get an ice cream from this Ferndale creamery, perfect for eating as you stroll around looking at some of the artisan vendors (bird houses! Lawn ornaments!). Still hungry? Grab a pastry and some of the local bakery vendors or a cookie (and a loaf of bread) from Avalon's booth. Or get a hot dog or some sausage from Binky's. Thirsty? How about a smoothie? While you're at it pick up some jam, some honey, or for something savory, how about some smoked fish? The new(er) space is perfect. Closer to the parking lots and there's plenty of room to wander and not feel crowded. Love the greenspace and if you want something a little heartier Buddy's is right next door so you can take your shopping bags and get some pizza on the patio. The perfect way to spend an afternoon in the sunshine.

The market is located behind the Bryant Library 8:00 am - 1 pm until October 29th. In my opinion this weekly event represents the "best of summer" from the wonderful produce; peaches blueberries, tomatoes, zucchini, the list goes on and on. Farm fresh and you really can taste the difference. Fresh bread, my favorite Rheinland Quarkstuten... don't ask just try it! I have even seen organic meat and unique products that compliment the food you buy at the market. If your not hungry yet may I also say, Fresh Michigan Cherry juice to top it all off! Everyone at the market is friendly and ready to help. It is one of the highlights of my week to attend I am so glad a friend told me.

SPecifically, we came here to find asafoetida, and after figuring out that it's not called asafoetida in Arabic, we left happily with not one, but two different configurations of the stanky herb (which made all of the difference in our dinner!). You can find some special, more obscure things, like weird varieties of cocoa powder or coffee, plus honey, and even locally made Yemeni halva/khalta (to the uninitiated, it's sort of a distant cousin of nougat or Turkish delight, but better-- get the harissa one, it's the bomb). The staff are friendly and helpful. They also have a bunch of other random housewares and household items ranging from tea sets to perfumes, including an "inspired by" Baccarat Rouge that smelled actually believable for a tenth of the price of the real deal. Go for it.

Displays were through out the space, but unlike a traditional market that stacks food items on shelves far above the shopper's line of sight. They carry a variety of top-shelf items at great prices. (Check out the pics I've posted.) Their perfumes are high quality oud-types, that for some Americans might be considered too heavy, but are fabulous and long-lasting... mostly selling at $25 at the time of this review. Check out Khanjar perfume for men - the art in the packaging aloneis worth $25 alone! But don't kid yourself, this smells incredible for both males and females, IMO. Their jewelry, mainly silversmithing of rings, is high quality and unique. I found them a bit high in price for the silver content but many held beautiful polished stones (Aqiq, Agate,) of which I have no knowledge of their value. Overall, this smallish market houses a powerful punch of high quality merchandise in comparison to larger markets, and excellent customer service. I'll be back.
