The Brussels Sprouts were topped well with bacon, candied walnuts, bleu cheese and a balsamic glaze. Unfortunately they were really undercooked, cold and hard in the center not close to al dente as would be expected. The salmon bowl was delicious with a generous helping of perfectly cooked salmon, corn and black bean salsa, pineapple and fresh mango. I won't order the fish tacos again. The fish was rubbery and foul smelling. It was paired with a slaw that was filled with the root ends of inedible veggies. The crema was tasty, but I mostly ate the chips and salsa that accompanied the dish. Overall, a less than satisfying meal.

We were here on a Thursday night. The restaurant was between 1/2 and 3/4 full when we were there,…read morebut there was not a wait. We ordered around 8:15 PM, a Cuban Crush and a Margherita Pizza, and got our food around 8:55 PM. Between the time we ordered and when we got our food, we did not see our server, Erica G. When we saw her 10 minutes after that, we let her know that some of our food came out cold. Her solution was to reheat the cold food or remake it. After being there around an hour, we really did not feel like staying, so we asked for neither. She sent her manager to talk to us. We did not catch his name, but he was wearing a University of Miami polo shirt. He offered the same solutions. When asked why we didn't have food for 45 minutes, he said a pizza can take up to 15 minutes to make and they were very busy. When I asked what he meant, the restaurant was not full, he asked if I wanted my food or not. I told him no, that I didn't really care for cold food and I was not sure if it was safe to eat. When I asked him that why we had not seen a server from the time we ordered until then, he said "What? Because your drink was empty or something?" At that point, I did not really want to argue over cold food and a waste of time, so we paid for our food and left. It was pretty disappointing to wait 40-45 minutes for cold food. It felt like our server went on break and no one covered for her, or noticed that some tables were going without service. I hope this is not what we should expect from Hamlin Pub. Hard to say if we will return. Picture of Margherita Pizza for posterity.

A pleasant surprise…read more About a week ago, I was out with my friends and we were looking for a chill place to just hang out and have a few drinks that wasn't too crowded when we happened upon this quiet little hangout rather by accident. For some reason, it seemed everyone in town was out that night and each one of our preferred watering holes was either too crowded or just felt meh to us. After meeting up in Flint Township after work, we were struggling to settle on an ideal, perhaps new, place that also served decent bar food, but was laid back and not filled with Nascar fans, dbags or overly drunk 21 year old girls. After ditching two other establishments because they were not our scene, we came across Vic's Place, quite by happenstance. Vic's Place was definitely the answer. Located around the back of the new Ruggero's location (with a separate bar entrance), Vic's was a nice, quiet alternative. It wasn't a lame sports bar or dive bar, just a quiet pub with good food and drinks. The food was quite good and the menu was fairly extensive, ostensibly because the food comes from the Ruggero's culinary team. After all, they are located within the same building. The food menu featured a lot of pasta dishes and specialty pizzas, as well as the basic tenets of bar food, namely burgers, sandwiches and deep fried appetizers. I split a ginormous order of loaded nachos, heavy on the traditional fixings with a pretty decent hot sauce on the side. My friend, Jen, ordered a personal margherita pizza and while I didn't sample her dish, it looked great, plus she said it was quite good and would order it again. Vic's had an extensive list of beers on tap, which I like in a bar, as well as a nice selection of craft beers. Draft beers came in two sizes- big and humongous. Guess which size I had. Anyway, the beer and wine lists were impressive and the cocktails, while they took a long time to hit the table, were fun, inventive and decidedly not on the weak side. The Old Fashioned was a good classic, strong, but subtle in all the right places. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. My friend, Jen, asked the bartender to "whip up something unique." She was not disappointed. Her nameless concoction was an ode to a Manhattan, but with a twist. I tried it and she was right- it was sublime. I liked the atmosphere. It was laid back and quiet, despite the fact that there were quite a few people in the place, seated up at the bar and at tables. The bar had a jukebox. That was kinda interesting. It wasn't something you see everyday. As for decor, there was a fire pit near our table and the bar was outfitted with a mix of high tops and low tables, with a slightly elevated seating area near the jukebox and the fire pit, which was where we were seated. Be careful when you step down or you'll trip, especially if you're a bit inebriated. The service was a little slow and it definitely took a little bit longer to receive our food than it probably would in a typical dive bar or a greasy spoon, but it wasn't that bad and there was only one bartender on duty pretty much the entire time we were there. Plus, the food was clearly quite a few notches above basic bar grub, anyway. Prices were on par with what one would expect. The draft beer specials were cheap and well worth the extra money to order the larger size draft. I will definitely be back. Our group came in with low expectations and left with any preconceived notions about the place completely shattered. Definitely a nice place for a quiet drink with friends after work or happy hour.

So I brought a bread tag all the way from Lansing to the Soogy Bottom in Flint just to put it in a burger? That sounds ridiculous! I never even asked for my food to be comped. And the waiter even said, "no, they never asked. That was me." I didn't even expect it to be comped. I was planning on paying full price. Then he said, "good because you are. You are a liar." We live in the Flint area and have eaten at Blackstone many times over the years. Unfortunately,…read moreafter today, we will not be returning, and I cannot recommend this restaurant based primarily on how we were treated by the owner and staff. We had a $25 Blackstone gift card that we received a few years ago. I completely understand that we should have used it sooner, but we simply didn't have it with us on previous visits. Today, we presented it and were told it would not be honored because, according to the waitress, the restaurant had changed ownership. I asked to speak with the owner because I wanted to have a reasonable conversation and find a fair solution. The restaurant is still Blackstone, at the same address, and operating continuously under the same name. I also explained my understanding that federal law provides protections for gift-card holders and asked him to at least see whether the card could be verified or processed. The card has a scan strip and serial number, and we even had the original receipt showing the $25 balance. His response was that he had no way to scan it and that it was the previous owner's responsibility. I asked him to try or find another way to verify it, but he refused. What really bothered me wasn't the $25. It was the complete unwillingness to even attempt to find a reasonable solution. Instead, the conversation became increasingly defensive and confrontational. At one point, he told me that he was a small-business owner who was struggling and couldn't be expected to take responsibility for someone else's obligation. I explained that I am also a small business owner and understand the challenges, but I also believe that taking care of customers and doing what is right matters. He then told me, specifically, that he DOES NOT care about his customers or their reviews. That's a pretty shocking thing to hear from a business owner. Eventually, after the argument, he yelled that he would give us the $25 off. But by that point, it felt less like an attempt to resolve the situation and more like something he was throwing at us after attacking us for even asking. Then, immediately afterward, our server made a sarcastic comment along the lines of, "So can I get $25 off too? Can I give everyone $25 off?" It was condescending and made us feel like we were somehow unreasonable for expecting a gift card to be honored. The owner then stormed off with the card. That he kept. We ultimately paid our bill in full with cash and left a fair tip. We did not accept the $25 discount because, at that point, accepting it didn't feel like the right way to resolve the situation. As we left, we told the owner we had paid our bill in full and wished him a good day. His response was a sarcastic "thank you." And that's really the disappointing part. $25 should never be worth losing a customer over. There were countless ways this could have been handled professionally. He could have tried to verify the card, offered a reasonable compromise, or simply had a respectful conversation with us. Instead, he chose to become confrontational and make us feel like we were the problem for asking a reasonable question. As for the food, it was a mixed experience. My date had the chicken club sandwich and said it was just "meh." It had very little meat on it. I had the ribs, which I thought were good I'd give them about 3.5 stars. The dry rub was good, and I ordered the sauce on the side, although the small dipping container provided wasn't nearly enough for the full order. Overall, I'd put the food somewhere around 2 stars. We sat outside, which I actually enjoyed because Back to the Bricks was going on and I like being able to watch the cars. There was a band playing inside, and it was extremely loud. If you're looking for a dinner where you can actually have a conversation, I'd recommend sitting outside. Unfortunately, the food isn't what will keep me from coming back. The owner and staff are the reason. I'd give the customer service experience zero stars. One other thing I find confusing: the owner repeatedly emphasized that this is a "different company" because ownership changed. Yet the restaurant is still operating under the same name, at the same address, and the online review history appears to continue as though it is the same establishment. If the new ownership truly considers this an entirely different company, I would think creating a new business presence and review page would make that distinction much clearer. I'm generally a very reasonable customer. I wasn't asking for anything outrageous. I simply wanted a $25 gift card addressed to the restaurant to be acknowledged and, at the very least, for someone to make a good faith effort to determine whether it could be honored. Instead, I left feeling attacked for even asking. Blackstone has lost me as a customer. We won't be back, and based on our experience today, I cannot recommend it.
