Fruit and vegetables outside, and plenty more inside. Argyll Place is probably one of my favourite shopping streets in Edinburgh. Odd, I know, but it contains three of my most frequented shops: the Bike Works, Al Haj's and Nadia's Fruit and Vegetables. This place is smaller than its next door neighbour, but has a much wider vegetables selection at a much lower price. It is perfect (indeed, this is what I do nine out of ten times) for nipping to on the bike, grabbing a few different vegetables and then heading back to cook dinner, having spent perhaps a quid without the prospect of vegetables then going to waste at the bottom of the fridge. It is open until an ideal time too: 8pm everyday (usually), and this of course means that even a late night dinner can be created using vegetables from here. Their wide selection caters for most, if not all, meal types, and are never in too bad shape. Of course, unlike supermarkets, fruit from here tends to be ripe and ready to eat... Overall a winner then? Definitely. Though not as smart as its next door neighbour, Nadia's is the perfect greengrocers.

It's got a nice rustic look about it, more like a market than an upmarket green grocer but they have a really good range. Everything looked fresh and lush, and as well as fruit and veg they sell some cupboard staples like muesli, nuts, seeds as well as vitamins. The staff were super friendly and chatty, and mentioned how welcoming all the locals had been which was nice to hear. This is a much-needed shop in Clarkston and I look forward to going back. I thought the prices were pretty reasonable too, I picked up a bunch of assorted veg for £5.

Just how could I resist? Strawberries, raspberries, pears, plums, clementines, oh my! Mix Fruits' vitamins have fuelled me through many a working day and every volunteer/member of staff who's tried a piece has commented on just how lovely the fruit is. - Most recently, we were amazed by the juiciest of juicy plums! Now, we're all getting out our pennies when Michael stops by. So, I was delighted when Mix Fruits opened up their very own fruit and veg shop just a few doors down, meaning I have a greengrocer just seconds away from work. And this festive season, you can also buy reasonably priced wreaths and trees which are absolutely gorgeous. I bought myself a beautiful wreath and felt all festive in an instant, and equally warm and fuzzy for supporting local business this Christmas. Also, I left with a SUPERSIZE avocado for £1. Seriously, this avo is a monster; the biggest I've ever, ever laid eyes on! I can't wait to devour it. I love how Mix Fruits plan to expand with chutneys and soup all planned down the line. Always greeted with a smile and 'Hello' and his wife always compliments me on my dresses/hair ~ so nice! Certainly service with a smile. I usually pop in for the more 'exotic' vegetables/spices/herbs (no, not those type of 'exotic herbs', tut-tut!) and the odd packet of noodles or chilli sauce. I love their more exotic and Asian variety of produce as let's face it, you can pretty much get apples/potatoes/etc.. anywhere but West Indian Hot Sauce or some quality spices are a wee bit harder to track down. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because sometimes their produce isn't the freshest I've seen; it's edible but if like me you don't eat a dinosaur (herbivore of course) load of fruit/veggies a day then it'd not last long in your hoose before you have to toss it. I'm all for supporting the small shop/business owners over the mega giants (Te*co to name but one) so shopping in these smaller, local and (most usually) friendlier shops is always good for the soul and your local area.

Ahmed's is a bit different and I like to save the pounds so I am keen to go to avoid the corporate empire that is the supermarket to go to this pleasant shop. You get my vote!

It's very reasonably priced and they also stock a variety of herbs and other such cooking ingredients. The staff are pretty alert and keen to help if you need anything. But most of all, I was so impressed with the quality of the produce. With the vibrant colours and fresh appearances, Tattie Shaw's stocks both homegrown and international fruit and veg. It's great that they represent local farmers and suppliers, but their more exotic offerings look equally as fresh - they've definitely been shipped in recently. As it's still the Scottish strawberry season, I'd recommend trying Tattie's for some of Fife's best berries!

The guy who runs this place (whose name i'm always forgetting) is a lovely but no nonsense chap, who knows his produce. He sells pretty much any fresh produce that you could care to buy. He seems to have a lot of everything all year round so he must be getting some of it from abroad but I know he also does seasonal stuff too. Ask him what's good and he'll suggest something! It's also handily on my walk home from work (assuming i get out in time before he closes!)

Was pleased with this place, a good tidy layout with lots of stock including fruit you wouldn't get in supermarkets and at roughly the same prices. Nice and fresh for the most part, I picked up a few things I didn't even the know the name of (too embarassed to ask) and got down with the smoothie making business! There's a lack of fruiters selling natural looking crops these days. I have watched some scary supermarket documentaries in my time and don't want to tell you that our unnatural quest for finding perfect looking fruit is actually doing our bodies a whole lot of harm, not to mention the amount of wastage supermarkets create in search of their perfectly formed plums. But I'm not talking for Greenpeace, I'm reviewing, so I guess what I'm trying to convey is how important independent fruit shops are to the community. The offerings in here look so much more natural, while also being impeccably clean. The watermelons look mouthwateringly juicy, and the fruit and veg in general is varied and colourful. Everything in here looks filled with nutrients and vitamins! All fruit, veg and scales are within plucking distance which is great for shorties like me who absolutely hate having to crane, swipe and tiptoe to retrieve anything! And this seems to happen to me often in fruitshops, bizarrely. This one, I am happy to report, has everything in working order and on my eye level. It's very easy to navigate. All in all, a good fruit shop which is open unfathomably early in the morning. Hell, now I have no more excuses not to get my five a day since it's enroute to work!

Their fruit is amazing and the oranges they stock are lovely and sweet. They stock other items like nuts, pulses, dates, figs etc and also stock cubes and sauces. The staff are happy to help if you can't reach an item or aren't sure what would go well with what or how to cook something new and what to serve it with. The prices as I said were cheaper that the supermarket and the items stayed fresher longer. They also don't force you to take a bag, if you have another they will offer to put your items in that rather than using further plastic or paper (they offer both)

Great wee shop on Overton Farm!…read more My guy, some friends of ours and I yearly, visit Overton Farm for their Point to Point Horse races. The past two years have been absolutely gorgeous and we've had an amazing time. The farm sets up a track in their grass fields and the day starts off with the pony horses and then the main event with at least 8 races for the day. There are bookies set up if you want to get your bets in for each race, and there is a bar and a wee cafe set up as well. At the front of the farm is the Overton Farm Shop & Butchery which has a wide variety of goods to purchase on the day as well as every other day. It's quite a small shop, but there are loads of delicious meats and fresh eggs, baked goods and basic kitchen staples. I stopped in for some snacks to enjoy during the races and left with a bag of locally baked biscuits, 4 bags of crisps, a bag of Hanover Pretzel Pieces (YES) and a diet irn bru. The line was out the door the day I went in, because of the horse race, but the staff were just as friendly as ever helping everyone make their way in and out in no time. Make sure you bring cash just in case as there is no ATM on the premises. Although they do have a card machine, the signal in the area is very hit or miss, so the machine was down the day I was there. If we lived in the area, we would shop here all the time for sure, but once a year will have to do it for us. Love this wee shop.
