When we first registered, there was no policy regarding makeup classes. Nothing was written even in the invoice. Therefore, we thought makeup classes was a given for sure. Then not long after we registered, the academy was closed due to a snow storm. When I called the school the reassured me that they will either push back an extra class or have a lesson rescheduled somehow. However, when I went in and asked again, they said they changed their mingds because a natural disaster isn't their fault. Then is it my fault? Who have I been talking to all this time..? They are not responsible. He also went on and explained if a Wednesday group student comes in on a Saturday group class, the students and mothers feel uncomfortable for having a unfamiliar face in the the class. He said the mothers complain to him right on the spot making him feel cornered. How does this even make sense..? Who in the world gets bothered that much for having another student in their class for one day? The moms in this community all know each other and is rather happy to see each other when meeting unexpectedly. What kind of excuse is he trying to spit up? Please. What nonsense! The owner and teachers are all the same. Low level quality constructors. The ballet classes are all one song one routine for one full year. There is no improvement, and all they do is stretch for the majority of the class. Having students quit in the middle of the semester out of boredom seems to be their goal. The art classes uses a an adult desk and the small students have to stick their necks out to see the teacher. The teacher never is prepared and does the set up after the class starts. She's always drinking coffee and enjoying her paid free time. The art supply fee is ridiculous and usually the class ends up using one lousy construction paper. Therefore, the students are always coming out of the class saying it is so boring. The teacher is also inattentive to the kids , it is obvious she's only trying to waste time as she gets paid. The piano and violin private lesson teachers have been changed about 5 thousand times. Therefore there is never a chance of improvement. Since the teachers are always changing, it caused my child anxiety. The teacher won't even let us makeup the classes through group lessons. He also has severe anger management problems. There was a father who met him for the first time, left saying that man belongs at a hospital. Also, he loves to talk about the other mothers who have quit behind their backs. He especially talked to me the most. He talks about how the child lacks patience and talks smack about the mothers ability in raising children. Since I also quit, I guess he will be talking about me to someone else, right? He just loves to talk smack. Please avoid sending your precious child to this academy. Save your moneys.

To my dismay, this did not occur. Many of the dance instructors showed a lack of creativity, and some movements for the younger classes were not age appropriate. My granddaughter said she felt isolated as a new student because the dance instructors showed obvious preference toward the students who were there the previous years. She did not feel a sense of fellowship as a member of the group which should have been fostered by the dance instructors. The instructors also offered little positive instruction when critiquing a dancer's missteps. They did, however, insult the dancer's intellect, which caused shame and insecurity. It's also essential to know, classes aren't held every Saturday as expressed during registration, and you won't get everything that was promised with the registration fee. Keep in mind that Devore Dance charges you for the last month of classes right at the start, even though no classes are actually happening that month. So, you end up paying double for the first month of dance lessons as well as the required registration fee. My interaction with the staff was also pretty unpleasant; I found them to be rude and dismissive. They showed a lack of interest in my concerns or questions, as though they were not knowledgeable or affiliated with the Devore Dance Center. Overall, I do not recommend Devore Dance Center as your upcoming dance experience on any level. This experience was HORRIBLE and not worth the hassle, stress or money! As someone who supports Black owned Businesses, I am truly disappointed and expected more.

Over time we were charged more and offered less. The family who runs the studio gives lip service and says they care about kids but they really only care about money. There is a serious lack of diversity and kids who have different backgrounds and religions may not feel welcome. Kids were punished for missing a competition due to a holiday, a family member's funeral and even a serious injury which might have required surgery. One dancer was made to dance with an injury and without a brace because it would ruin "the look". Although there are some good teachers, your child can get equal instruction in a more supportive environment (with nicer owners) elsewhere.

Even though we paid a years tuition for our daughters class- the owner has decided to charge each dancer $35 before they can participate in the dance recital and will not even allow parents to purchase tickets until this is paid. Is this a studio that cares? No way. If you sign up be aware that the owner will just charge arbitrary charges and pretend it's for a trophy. Disappointing and we will not be participating in the recital at all and therefore will not purchase the 10 tickets we bought last year. We also plan to spread the word to all friends.

This review is for a private session with Christina who covers urban hip hop…read more A couple of things to note.. Call in if you're looking to attend class soon, but stick to email if your inquiry isn't urgent. It does take some time for them to get back to you because they have so many people to get back to. I reached out via email because I wanted to take a hip hop class for fun but lack dance experience. The best thing about a private session is that tutors cater their lessons to suit your level and pace. After further consultation about the type of dance style and music I was interested in, they helped me book an appointment. I also wanted to note that I was being rather difficult due to a change in my schedule and went back and forth about attending the class. I initially asked for a refund but ultimately decided to attend and the staff were really understanding about it. A class costs about $100 not including other add-ons (music video editing and filming). If you decide to schedule a private session you should have the following information prepared -location you want the session at (you're responsible for renting the studio space if you choose Manhattan) -dates and time preferences for the session (classes are based on instructor availability which typically means most weekends during the afternoon or evening) -style of dance and music suggestions (instructor ultimately decides on the routine and song but you can tell them what you're looking for) Once you're booked you'll get a confirmation email and payment instructions. Payments must be made at least 2 days in advance before your class. GETTING THERE: You can take the F to Parsons and hop on the Q65 bus if you don't want to take the LIRR. I believe the F, 7, N, and Q can also take you there but expect to do a couple of transfers if you don't live in the area. I'm hours away from the flushing location but I made the trip based on reviews. I'm not confident enough to perform in groups and decided a private session would be a good way to start. I heard how welcoming and friendly the instructors and students are at this place so decided to give it a shot. THE LESSON: I just finished my private lesson with Christina and I feel empowered. We danced to Ariana Grandes God is a Woman which was originally prepared for one of their intermediate classes. Her choreography really had me feelin myself. I have two left feet and at times got really nervous trying to be technically accurate but Christina was so patient with me and gave excellent tips on how to loosen up and enjoy dance. She broke down all the steps clearly, slowly and then we practiced on an off with music. I definitely want to continue practicing and come back for lessons again. Also, as a heads up be sure to ask if you can record the session because they typically only record when you're done with the entire choreography. For those of you who are beginners as well, live close to Manhattan, and want to try group classes she recommends Ness and Fernando (my spelling might be inaccurate) if you're looking to learn upbeat hip hop style dance. They teach on Wednesday and Friday. Overall, this class really helped boost my confidence and it was worth the cost and trip.
