It's kinda cool to watch people walk pass and then do a U-Turn to check what's really going on in the room! There is also ballet for younger children and hip hop. Not sure when either classes start or end. Little girls in tutus are twirling away before I get to class and somewhere in the middle I start hearing hip hop from the adjoining rooms.

I lived in San Marco so I knew of Dance Trance but a Groupon made me try it out. I am about the least coordinated person around and I eventually caught on. I also took an urban ballet class that was super fun and made me wish that I knew more about ballet.

5 stars -- Monarch Ballroom & Dance Studio…read more I am over 70. I had not danced with anyone in about 43 years. I have almost no social skills, I avoid crowds, and I would rather sit off to the side than mix. For years I was the guy who helped play the music. I never really learned to dance to it. I could never get anyone to take lessons with me so, after a lifelong friendship ended, I finally walked in on my own. To say that I was completely out of my comfort zone would be an understatement! Walking in was the right call. Krista is a great teacher. She is patient with a complete beginner who would rather hide than be on the floor. She does not rush. She actually teaches the steps, then she makes you do them until they start to stick. Her excitement is real. It is not an act, and it rubs off -- even on someone like me who would rather sit out. She made the room feel safe enough that I stayed on the floor instead of heading for a chair. The rest of the staff is just as good. Nobody made me feel foolish for being late to this. If you think you are too old, too shy, or "not a dancer," this studio is built for that. They say they can teach anyone. In my case, that was not a slogan.

My next lesson we're going to focus on swing. I like Chris's style of teaching. He shows you the steps, let's you practice but also teaches techniques to help improve style. This part makes you stand out when you go dancing in public. I'm excited to try a group lesson as well and a social event. Chris explained the group lessons help you be more comfortable dancing with multiple partners because everyone's style is different and you have to be ready for anything. They also have three fun social events a month: a dance party, a non-dance activity (e.g. karaoke, indoor rock climbing, or go-karts), and Rueda in the Park (a group dance in Memorial Park). The Director, Ally, has created a warm, friendly atmosphere. I remember once, in my early days at the studio, going out the door after a group lesson when I heard her shout "no one leaves without a hug." I turned around, went back in, and got my hug. Dance Salsa Jax is a nonprofit that rents space at two studios. They teach the most common Latin dances, Salsa (Sunday afternoons in Avondale) and Bachata (Wednesday evenings on Old St. Augustine Rd.). Ally also offers reasonably-priced private lessons. I'm glad I found this place, my home dance studio.
