My next lesson we're going to focus on swing. I like Chris's style of teaching. He shows you the steps, let's you practice but also teaches techniques to help improve style. Chris explained the group lessons help you be more comfortable dancing with multiple partners because everyone's style is different and you have to be ready for anything. The first dance Antonio taught us was Bachata! Antonio explained it so well and we had sooo much fun following along! The next dance was Salsa. We started off slow then picked up some speed to go with the music. We took a break because boy! I felt like I had just done cardio LOL Our group took some beautiful pictures by the Christmas Tree. I'm pretty decent, but super out of practice. Hubby on the other hand, grew up in a community straight out of the movie Footloose- ultra conservative Christian with no TV, no music, no dancing. He was permitted to play drums in symphony, but that was the limit of his musical upbringing, and he's NEVER been a dancer. That is changing. My fat ass needs to get back into shape and he needs to improve his cardio function. I HATE going to the gym and dance is my favorite form of exercise, so I purchased an introductory Groupon that includes 3 private lessons 1 group lesson and 1 dance party. We had our first lesson yesterday, and I have to give props to our instructor, Stas, who is also the owner. He sits down with you first to talk about how they run things, what you can expect, and to discover why you're there and what your goals are. He taught us basic dance steps, then taught us the basic merengue and salsa steps with a couple of turns. I was very impressed with his teaching style and look forward to many more lessons - and hope to instill a love of dance in hubby.

The first hour of the class is for beginners and very easy to follow. The second hour is more for beginner to intermediate. There was a healthy mix of male and female ratio for dance partners. By the end of the night you would of danced with everyone; rotate! There were two instructors a male and a female who were very attention to detail and helpful (without being invasive or picky about movements). Overall they both just wanted you to have fun and I did. The studio hosts bi-weekly to monthly socials and there is also a dance club that practices after classes. Overall great place, wonderful parking and affordable. Each class is $10 however, I believe they have packages.

I remember once, in my early days at the studio, going out the door after a group lesson when I heard her shout "no one leaves without a hug." I turned around, went back in, and got my hug. Dance Salsa Jax is a nonprofit that rents space at two studios. They teach the most common Latin dances, Salsa (Sunday afternoons in Avondale) and Bachata (Wednesday evenings on Old St. Augustine Rd.). Ally also offers reasonably-priced private lessons.
