5 stars -- Monarch Ballroom & Dance Studio…read more I am over 70. I had not danced with anyone in about 43 years. I have almost no social skills, I avoid crowds, and I would rather sit off to the side than mix. For years I was the guy who helped play the music. I never really learned to dance to it. I could never get anyone to take lessons with me so, after a lifelong friendship ended, I finally walked in on my own. To say that I was completely out of my comfort zone would be an understatement! Walking in was the right call. Krista is a great teacher. She is patient with a complete beginner who would rather hide than be on the floor. She does not rush. She actually teaches the steps, then she makes you do them until they start to stick. Her excitement is real. It is not an act, and it rubs off -- even on someone like me who would rather sit out. She made the room feel safe enough that I stayed on the floor instead of heading for a chair. The rest of the staff is just as good. Nobody made me feel foolish for being late to this. If you think you are too old, too shy, or "not a dancer," this studio is built for that. They say they can teach anyone. In my case, that was not a slogan.

My next lesson we're going to focus on swing. I like Chris's style of teaching. He shows you the steps, let's you practice but also teaches techniques to help improve style. This part makes you stand out when you go dancing in public. I'm excited to try a group lesson as well and a social event. Chris explained the group lessons help you be more comfortable dancing with multiple partners because everyone's style is different and you have to be ready for anything. Antonio showed me around the dance studio. It was clean, nicely decorated and I loved the disco balls hanging off the ceiling! The rest of our group joined us and we began our lesson! The first dance Antonio taught us was Bachata! Antonio explained it so well and we had sooo much fun following along! The next dance was Salsa. We started off slow then picked up some speed to go with the music. We took a break because boy! I felt like I had just done cardio LOL Our group took some beautiful pictures by the Christmas Tree. We finished it off with an awesome group dance! My friends and I had an amazing evening and WE CAN NOT wait to return! You are one super cool Ballroom dancer, Antonio!!!

I'm pretty decent, but super out of practice. Hubby on the other hand, grew up in a community straight out of the movie Footloose- ultra conservative Christian with no TV, no music, no dancing. He was permitted to play drums in symphony, but that was the limit of his musical upbringing, and he's NEVER been a dancer. That is changing. My fat ass needs to get back into shape and he needs to improve his cardio function. I HATE going to the gym and dance is my favorite form of exercise, so I purchased an introductory Groupon that includes 3 private lessons 1 group lesson and 1 dance party. We had our first lesson yesterday, and I have to give props to our instructor, Stas, who is also the owner. He sits down with you first to talk about how they run things, what you can expect, and to discover why you're there and what your goals are. He taught us basic dance steps, then taught us the basic merengue and salsa steps with a couple of turns. I was very impressed with his teaching style and look forward to many more lessons - and hope to instill a love of dance in hubby.
