Miscommunication about what I wanted. I wasn't shown a sketch first before it was applied to my back. Stuck with an incomplete butterfly tattoo. I asked for the butterfly on the right, flowers from the bottom left, finally color from bottom right. How hard can that be, right? It's a pretty tattoo but it wasn't done to my liking since I'm the one wearing it. The theme was supposed to be the butterfly yet Dan Rhodes tattooed the flowers first & then squeezed the butterfly between the flowers. I am not happy & will never return to this shop. Did a walk in and got tattooed by Steve Martin. Steve was exactly what you'd want in a tattoo artist. He was blunt, insightful and made suggestions that complimented what I was looking for. My friend and I were both getting our first tattoos, so I did pretty extensive research and was lead to this place. First I emailed the studio, and the shop assistant, Maryleigh, responded within the day and was extremely friendly. I told her what were we're looking for and she was helpful and recommended a few artists. From there I did a bit instagram creeping and decided to go with Dylan. We both wanted pretty minimalistic thin lined tattoos, and he seemed perfect for that! I had some email back and forth with Dylan, explained what we wanted, and again, he was very responsive and seemed excited to be our first tattooer. The shop minimum is $100 and I asked around a few shops, and it's the same all over philly. As soon as we got there, we were helped, and Dylan pretty much greeted us right after we walked in. He showed us what he drew and I was a bit of a pain in the ass and made him redraw and tweak it about 5 times but he never complained and was super cool about it. The overall studio is clean and the rooms are private. He used all new and clean tools and even aimed the space heater closer to me and let us pick music! He recommended tattoo placement, and told us what to expect since we were both getting our firsts. In the end, we both loved our tattoos and were super happy with Dylan's work and patience with us! I just got my hummingbird tattoo done this past Saturday by Bobby. He's new to the shop and area so I made the selection solely off his portfolio. It couldn't be more true to his skill set! I am in awe by the amount of detail and the color pallet he worked with. Pictures do not show its justice! I would and have recommended bobby to all my friends and those looking to get a new tattoo. I had two works done at this studio - eyebrows with Mary-Leigh and a tattoo with Steve Martin. They were both great, easy to communicate with, and done excellent job! Mary-Leigh is the nicest person on Earth and she did such a great job with my eyebrows. I had an old microblading and she covered it perfectly, changing the shape of my brows. They look natural and way better now! I also had a tattoo done by Steve and it came out great! Steve was very informative, made great suggestions for the size of the tattoo, and he was super quick! I've been to Art Machine for three tattoos from Andy Robinson in 2015-2016. Every experience was great! All the tattoos healed well and I always get compliments on them. Andy is super easy to work with and executed each tattoo perfectly. He's also really fun just to chat with. I was so happy to see that he recently returned to Art Machine. I'm giving 2 stars as a baseline simply out of respect for how amazing their art work is. I've contacted the main page, and attempted making appointments with 2 different artists...to no avail. The first, I asked about pricing and I was ghosted. Maybe that's bad form and he got insulted, which could be entirely my bad...but I made it clear that this was to be my first tattoo and that I didn't really know what I was doing. The second...I have no idea. I got an initial reply...then ghostville, USA...population me. If I did something rude or if my design idea was impossible: That's okay...but tell me. I'm a newbie, and I made that clear. Just don't ghost me. I know this is a business run by emo people...but we've all been out of 8th grade for a while now. Great new ink spot on Frankford Ave. The proprietor, Tim, has been tattooing me for about 12 years. The new space he has opened is awesome. It's a huge, wondering space with about a half-dozen chairs on the perimeter of an open floor plan. There are shiny concrete floors, lots of crazy Asian zen things all around, some chill furniture (including the craziest sinks I have ever seen!).... basically, a great spot to hang out and let your blood pressure rise before you get tattooed. The work? Well, I think it is as good as it gets. I can't speak for all of the artists there, but the caliber of Tim's work is as high as anywhere in the city. He has a great new school eye. Tim has given me not one but TWO epic tattoos, including a heart wrapped in bacon. (Yes, BACON) The people there are super cool too. Lots of specialty shops (think: jewelry/piercing stores, head shops, many tattoo shops) are full of folks who know more than you and let you know all the time. Not Art Machine. I was there for over half of my day, and the entire time everyone was cool as shit. We talked, we watched some crazy youtube videos, it was a great time. As for price, well, its pretty good. The work I got done would have been $100 more in center city for lower quality and less care. There are a lot of "fast food" tattoo joints in the city- get you in, get something on your "canvas" and get your money as quick as possible. These are the sorts of places that do way too many jobs a day, and quality suffers. Art Machine is just the opposite. Tim talked to me numerous times about actually taking LESS appointments, because he needs to give more time to himself and be a better artist. THAT is fucking awesome. Now is the time, people. After much consideration I chose AMP due to their stellar reviews. I chose Nick (the Tailor) as my artist and was put on his waiting list. A month later I went in and got exactly what I was looking for. AMP was clean, the artists were friendly, and it was an overall laid back and relaxed experience. I don't have enough good things to say about my experience here. I wanted a fairly large memorial piece on my back/shoulder for my grandfather. I am not artistic but I did have sort of an idea of what I was looking for. I really needed an artist to fully realize it. I looked at many many online portfolios and ended up choosing Nick The Tailor. I had a consult with him in early Sept. We worked out what I was talking about, he took good notes and we made the appt for mid November. I think all the artists require a 100$ deposit to book appts. I got my tattoo yesterday and I couldn't be more pleased. Its exactly what I was hoping when I started this process. Large but feminine and really captures the memorial vibe but still very beautiful. Nick is so nice. He will talk to you but is quiet when concentrating. I like that about him. Also Once i needed a break to relax and another break to go to the bathroom. He gave me the time I needed and didn't make me feel like I was being too big of a pain in the butt. He is professional and takes his job seriously. Yeah I had to wait a bit to get an appt with him but frankly that doesn't seem like a "con" to me. I'd rather go to someone who is good enough TO have that kind of waitlist then just go anywhere and risk the (lifelong) outcome. Also, while slightly on the pricey side, you know what they say....you get what you pay for. This is on your body forever.....PAY THE MONEY. Everyone else I dealt with was nice and helpful too. I didn't get the "too cool for school" vibe you get at some shops. I have another tattoo I'm eyeing and will def be going to Nick again when I'm ready. He is top of the line..... I've sent a few friends here to get work done and I am so proud to finally have an incredible piece of my own. You could close your eyes and point to a drawing and walk out with an incredible tattoo. When I first stepped into Art Machine, I thought I had the wrong address. The comfy couches in the waiting area and the open and airy feeling are probably what confused me. The space is huge and things are clean and this place seems to run like a well-oiled machine (one that produces art, hence the name). I have half a dozen tattoos and had heard about Art Machine from some friends, so I did some research and found Gia, who was willing to cover-up/re-work a flower tattoo on my shoulder that I had done elsewhere in the city. I had never loved the tattoo and it had faded/smeared and I wanted something fresh and bold. Gia communicated with me over email and I sent her loads of pics of my tat in its current state. On the day I showed up to receive my new and improved artwork, Gia made me feel at ease, first drawing some improvements on my current tattoo. Then, she literally re-did the entire thing, adding some new leaves and refreshing the old colors, making them bold and vibrant - exactly what I had wanted. It's been a few days since I had my tattoo done by Gia and it looks amazing, even in the healing stages. I've received so many compliments on the colors and the artwork and every time I look in the mirror, I feel happy about my tattoo as opposed to just "meh," which is how I felt before Gia did her magic on it. A really good friend of mine (who had come to visit from halfway across the country) and I decided to get semi-matching eagle tattoos on our upper arms. It was going to be his fifth tattoo and my first. I'm super thrilled to let any readers of this review know that I honestly have no shortage of great things to say about our experience at AMP. We had originally walked in without an appointment kind of late last Monday, to see if they could squeeze us in before the end of the workday. There was no one available, but the guy at the front desk listened to us describe what we were looking to have done and looked at our inspiration materials and handed us the business cards of a couple of the artists who might be available later in the week and whose styles would be most compatible with our ideas. It was hardly a waste of a trip, as we definitely felt well taken care of even then, and I should add that we both walked out that evening very impressed just with the overall vibe, look, and cleanliness of the studio. It was really nice and the complete opposite of what I was expecting before we walked in. Very chill and relaxed. We ended up coming in for a late afternoon appointment with Andy last Thursday. Via email, we'd showed him our source material and in person, he took the time to look through it again as well as hear us describe our thoughts and ideas a second time. Then he walked over to a big table in the middle of the room, sat down, and sketched on his tablet for at least fifteen minutes. It made us feel good to know that he was really putting some serious thought and quality effort into creating a unique and worthwhile design in his style based on the idea we walked in with. When he did eventually come back to join us again in the waiting area, we were both immediately impressed and wowed with his sketch. During the actual process of getting the tattoo, Andy could not have been more welcoming. I never felt anxious or had a single worry. He told me what he was about to do before each new step and asked how I was doing every so often, and I felt very calm and comfortable in the chair. He didn't talk much otherwise, but I actually appreciated that since I knew it was because his attention was focused solely on the art he was creating. As I'm writing this review, our tattoos are healing very nicely and we both could not be happier with the work we each got. Prior to getting this tattoo, I was almost certain this would be a "one and done" kind of experience, but now I'm not so sure. If I were ever to decide to get another tattoo, chances are extremely high that I'd be heading back to AMP and hoping Andy could find a spot for me in his appointment schedule. read more

This shop has some great tattoo artists! Literally followed Joey Knuckles from Olde City Tattoo to his new home at AMP, and for good reason. Initially heard about him when my boyfriend wanted to start a sleeve, and showed me Knuckles's website/work. The man knows how to use bold lines and color to create some awesome tattoos. AMP is a nice shop with lots of open space and clean floors, and the music will vary depending on who's working on a tat. I went to the shop a few times with my boyfriend so he could finish his sleeve with Knuckles, and got a tattoo for myself as well. I had an idea for my tat and after explaining it to Knuckles, he was professional and courteous when he explained my initial design wouldn't work (too much detail in a small space) and advised me to change the design & location a bit to keep the level of detail. While the final product was larger than I planned in my head, I'm incredibly happy with what he did, and I'd definitely go back to Philly to get another tattoo from Knuckles. His prices are extremely fair, and he's a really nice guy to boot. I've been to my fair share of tattoo shops/tattoo artists that just want to get you inked and get you out the door for the next fare, but I never felt that way at AMP/with Knuckles. FYI - if he's working on a large tattoo for you (e.g., you've booked him the whole shift or you need multiple sittings), it doesn't hurt to feed the guy while you're there! He'll appreciate it, and you can keep your energy up while getting inked! read more

I am 31 years old and for the last 10 years I have wanted a specific tattoo on my forearm. For some reason I wasn't ready, or the time wasn't right. I don't live in Philly, I actually had never even been there until yesterday. As soon as my flight got on the ground I knew it was the day. I did my research on tattoo shops in the area and came across Art Machine Productions. Their website had some very impressive work displayed, as well as this yelp page. I decided this was my spot. When I arrived I was greeted by Nick Panzer. He was extremely friendly and made me feel comfortable (as I was slightly anxious). We talked about what I wanted and he drafted me up the PERFECT tattoo. I was getting the work done moments later. I have a very unique story behind what I had done and Nick seemed very interested in hearing it. It's been about a year since I received my tattoo from Benji Harris here. It's amazing. Out of the three tattoos i have it was the cleanliest and easiest tattoo I've ever received as well as one of the nicest tattoo artists I've dealt with. I definitely intend on going back for more and am constantly handing out their business cards. The atmosphere of the place as well as the genuine like-ability of all the artists there helps you know that not only are they coworkers but they're chill friends as well. It's always helpful when you enjoy going in to work and I can tell that's exactly what goes on here. The One downside I can note is the parking in the area for those driving in to get tatted up. But that's a given in the city of brotherly love. :) just make sure to arrive early for your appointment so you can figure that stuff out. read more

I called around to a couple of places, and it was either booked or closed. I was looking to get something ASAP. I called and the gentleman over the phone was very polite and was able to fit me in as a walk-in. My tattoo artist name, was Bobby. The only thing i wish he had done was to inform me that i had to wait in order for him to set up his station (which took about 30 mins) I didn't mind the wait though. This was the first time i gotten a tattoo in an actual shop, I usually get it done by friends, this is my third tattoo. You also have to sign a consent form and if your 18 years of age you have to sign a consent form and bring an adult. He was polite, he didn't talk much in the beginning but in the end, he was communicating with me about the aftercare and pricing of the tattoo. I felt very comfortable and felt all my questions were answered, will be returning again. I paid $100 for a 3" long tattoo (This Too Shall Pass, with a cross at the end). Not my first time getting a tattoo but my first time doing a cover up! I probably did the worst thing I could of done and get a tattoo when I was 17 and regretted it years later ! I found Andy on Instagram and instantly love his work. I made an appointment with him and paid my deposit and was excited to get this long over due cover up ! He definitely did an amazing job. I got a large piece done over the course of three sessions. Two of those sessions had to be rescheduled due to the owner closing the shop down. I understand that issues arise, but when I schedule both appointments weeks in advance, only to find out hours before I leave and make the drive to Philly (1.5 hours one way), it gets old and irritating. A big shout to Joey for giving me a heads up, adjusting his schedule to accommodate mine and getting me in ASAP. This Guy Tim Pangburn is absolutely amazing. I wanted a Celtic cross and went to another artist. Long story short by the time it was done it looked like a tombstone. I went to a cover up "specialist" and after 4 hours you could still see the old tattoo and the color was horrendous. Enter Tim Pangburn. A stone cold assassin. He drew with sharpies free hand and had the whole tattoo done in 3 hours. A cover up of a coverup which looks like an original piece. I have no idea where this guy got his talent but his skills combined with the friendly atmosphere and knowledge made my whole two years in search of my original quest worthwhile. Do not go to anyone else but tim and his associates otherwise you'll be back for him to fix it later! read more

I had a horrable, horrable tattoo that needed a cover up. I resercehed places in Philly and decided to check out AMP. I walked in and was very lucky to be seen same day and to get artist Bobby Lockhart. He put his heart and soul into my cover up. Sat there for 4 1/2 hours on the chair with one 3 minute break. My cover up turned out better than I could ever have imagined. You ever see a cover up and you can tell it's a cover up? Well, this one is spectacular. I've tried to see the old tattoo underneath and I can't. I will never go anywhere else for a tattoo and I recommend this place to everyone!!! read more
