For Review 1300 I'm going to give it up to the place that made my first tattoo a reality! For close to 2 decades my first tattoo has been something the I had completely over thought with complicated design after random art and pop culture ideas that I have a limited scope of connection with currently. So when I saw that Moo Tattoo had their special tattoo deal for Halloween, I knew it was the time to go and have my first taste of the ink. Especially since it gave me the chance to get a tattoo from someone I knew I wanted to work with. For a few years Noah has been a good drinking buddy at Tattooed Mom, and I've shared many good conversations about art, south philly, and cats. And I've especially marveled over things like the watercolor tattoos that he's done. So between that and the praise that people like Jenna C. gave for Moo handling people getting their first tattoo, I knew it was the spot to go to. With there being a holiday flash special all weekend the shop was crowded beyond belief. But Noah and his crew managed to accommodate above and beyond, and even took some design requests within reason of what fit the size requirements. With it being all hollows eve there were plenty of ghosts, skulls, witches, and other spooky designs that were relevant to my interests. But I opted to go with a black cat in respect to Tippy Moo Cat (RIP! - https://www.facebook.com/TippyMooCat/), and Noah's sabretooth kitty, Mort. After a successful first tattoo Noah provided me with some spot on cleaning and care suggestions, and even made sure to send a follow up on it. I went here for a specific tattoo that I had seen they'd done before. I should've seen the red flags from the get go. I had Zack as an artist, he had no clue who I was when I said what time my appt was or what I wanted. Technically everything seemed fine, he barely said a word to me, and when he was done I immediately noticed some application issues and was vocal about them. He gave me zero aftercare instructions or anything, and was pretty silent overall the entire time. Luckily this wasn't my first tattoo by a long shot so I knew what to do. A few days later my ankle where the piece was hurt a lot. A LOT. Long story short it was badly infected, disgusting looking and this was the first time ever I had an issue with a tattoo. I called and spoke to someone who said "get it looked at and also send in a photo to them" and "come in tomorrow" and emailed the shop after that. I did NOT wanna go in after all that happened and also didn't happen, sent in a photo and was basically blamed for it getting infected and being such a mess. Nah, not my fault. They told me what I used on it isn't what they recommend and told me I should've used cocoa butter. This was like my 15th tattoo and not one single person in my entire life told me to use cocoa butter. I did NOT appreciate being told it's my fault basically because of what I used (which I've used nearly every time I've gotten tattooed), and they said they'd touch it up when it healed. I don't even know who emailed me back because they didn't say during any of the back and forth emails. It took so long, an urgent care visit, antibiotics, and a lot of pain before it mostly healed. I wasn't about to go back there in general let alone for them to "fix it". Aside from the infection the lines weren't even, there was a blow out, and it wasn't well done. Luckily my main artist was able to bring it to life and clean it up like crazy so thank goodness for her. 2 other friends have had major issues with application and linework, as well as infections after getting pieces done here. SO RUDE! I brought my friend here for her first tattoo with the artist Noah. He was extremely condescending and made us feel very uncomfortable with his attitude. From the second we got in he had a huge attitude and when we expressed with was her first ever tattoo he blankly started at her and very rudely said "okay?" We felt so not welcomed that she did not feel comfortable having him tattoo her and we left. I posted a 2 star review on Google w pics of my tattoo explaining why I didn't have a good experience and the tattoo artist/owner of this shop responded with nothing but defensiveness. He did a sloppy job and won't own up to it. I didn't mention this in my review but another woman who was getting a touch up for a previous tattoo from Moo Tattoo also showed up during my appointment time and as soon as she left Noah and the other tattoo artist that did her touch up began talking bad about her. I made an appointment today for 7pm and ran way behind due to ride issues. They communicated with me on email and were nice enough to give me time. I of course apologized when I got there. I was having a very bad day and both of the men in there I didn't get the other guys name but they were both very kind. Zach was my tattoo artist and I'm inlove with both of my tattoos. It was very quick and easy and he explained aftercare to me making sure I understood and I will definitely go back. I went in there all shaky from stress and such and I left feeling happy. Noah was fantastic, he was very professional and friendly. My sister and I wanted matching tattoos in memory of our father, and I had a pen and ink drawing on a print that we wanted to use as a reference. I'm not from Philly so I called the shop and was told to email Noah the owner, who would be available the day we wanted to come in. I emailed him the picture and set the appointment, and when we showed up he had the drawing all finished and it was perfect. Both tattoos came out great, the picture was very detailed and somewhat large, but his drawing and tattoo didn't lose much detail at all when finished. Price was also reasonable. He chatted with us the whole time which always makes the time go faster (and gets your mind off the pain). I've had alot of tattoos and I would definitely recommend Noah and moo tattoo. As with all tattoos, it's best to know what you want and be ready to articulate it, and have reference pictures, but also be open to appropriate changes. Not everything that works on a page will work on skin. I believe my sister, who lives in Philly, is planning to get her next tattoo done by Noah and I hope I can get another one from him as well! read more

It's been nearly a year since I got a tattoo at Moo during their $31 Halloween Weekend special. I made an appointment online, and I had no wait once I arrived. The tattoo was done quickly and it turned out great, and has held up great a year later! My only complaint is that the shop/artists didn't feel super welcoming (I was the only person there besides the artists, it wasn't packed/stressful or anything), so I felt uncomfortable. There was a small crowd exactly at 2:00 when they opened, we were able to pick out our tattoos, fill out our forms and get on the list! Tattoo for life right, get what you pay for, anyway he didn't charge me for the tattoo I still tipped though for labor and the supplies. Anyway I went to get it fixed,showed up at the shop cause if you call nobody is able to tell you when he will be in or even if he is going to come in. 2 weeks go by and I send a picture and was told it still wasn't healed cause the skin was shining which I understand and agree so after a month goes by I try once again to get this resolved only to be told (like I was annoying him) that it still wasn't healed without even seeing it. My tattoo came out great and I am very happy with it, but the overall experience was a bit uncomfortable. I tried to make conversation with my artist before the session, he grunted in response. My last two tattoos were done by extremely friendly artists, so I guess that is what I've gotten used to. I understand that sometimes when focused on artistry it is hard to maintain conversation and I'm okay with that, but a little bit of banter before you begin to help shake off nerves (yes I still get nervous) usually is helpful. Again, the shop itself is clean and the artists are talented, but for me, I prefer a more talkative and warm environment, so this shop isn't for me, but if you're just looking to get in and get out with an okay piece, then by all means, Moo Tattoo has you covered! EDIT: I wrote this review pretty immediately after receiving my tattoo. Now that it's healed I am not as please. Their black ink is not very fresh looking. I'm not going to write about the quality of the tattoos here because I decided not to get mine done at Moo. I'm going to write about manners, work ethic, and professionalism. I got recommended to Moo by a few friends and thought to give them a shot. I went online and liked what I saw so obviously Moo has some talent. I was really excited to get my tattoo done here but I decided that before I schedule anything I need to visit the shop. I walk in and there's a man sitting on the other side of the shop. I say hello and explain that I had been speaking over email with somebody about scheduling a tattoo and wanted to see the shop, pick an artist, and schedule a date/time. Now. I have a hearing problem. I was deaf as a child. It's very difficult for me to hear what somebody is saying when they're across a room so I asked him if I could come closer. He tells me no. Then he begrudgingly gets up and walks over after I ASK him to come closer so we could have a conversation not across the room. Now he seems annoyed. I ask if he's having an ok day, made a joke about does he need a hug and he gets even ruder being all "I was hugging a woman all last night" I wanted to exclaim disbelief that a woman would want to spend a night with him but I'm a lady and so just say ok! Next. I ask who is capable of doing the tattoo I want and he says himself or another artist. Fine, fine. Good to know. THEN. I ask if he's alright doing this tattoo on me because it seems like I'm annoying him and he's making me uncomfortable. He tells me that I'm the weird one and he doesn't know what niceties I expect. Maybe next time I come in he'll make me a gift basket. Excuse me? This is your business. You're a professional trying to earn money, how could you talk down to a potential customer like that? This wasn't my first tattoo, I'm getting my ribs done, and I don't want an artist who thinks I'm some WEIRD idiot touching me in what I consider an intimate spot for 3 hours. What's WEIRD is that Moo can be in business with crappy personalities like this hanging around. If you don't care about somebody treating you like a human being then come to Moo. This has to be one of the worst tattoo places I've been to. It's clean and all, but most places are nowadays. When I first climbed the stairs, there was absolutely no one there--no patrons, no desk person, nothing. I looked around, behind a pole/column on the other side of the room and saw a guy sitting there looking extremely bored. I made a couple of shuffling noises and he eventually woke up with a sleep hey what do you need? I showed him what I wanted and this tattoo "artist" stayed silent, completely confused. This is when it all went downhill. I am sort of an illustrator, not the best, but much better than the average patron. I have an existing tattoo that I wanted to add to. I traced my body shape and the existing tattoo in Adobe Illustrator. I then spent several days looking at reference images and drawing the addition in the position I wanted. I handed the "artist" a very clean line drawing of this, and explained what I was trying to do. Without even looking at my existing tattoo, he said he couldn't work with this. He told me I needed to look online for an image. I told him that this drawing was the result of that, but he insisted that he needed a finished internet image. I drew the conclusion that he was only capable of tracing an image from one of the 100 tattoo books they had. What happened to you being an "artist"? You can't tell me that most people come in there with the exact image of what they want. I gave what was pretty much a finished piece that needed cleaning up, but he still couldn't do it. Perhaps I should've had a real artist draw it on me and shade it so he could simply go over it in ink. The major problem I have is with their (and many other places') extremely loose usage of the word "artist." For some reason I always thought a tattoo artist was primarily an illustrator who knew how to use a tattoo gun, but now I realize that they are actually trained chimps skilled at inserting permanent ink into your skin. What a joke. Good luck finding a tattoo chimp anywhere in center city who actually has basic drawing skills and creativity. If you want some stock art from a book or some text, maybe this place is just fine for you, but it'd still be no different than any other place. If you want something original though, you definitely won't find it here. Jeremiah at the Alley recommended Moo Tattoo to me. He recommended them, when he's only been in for a consultation. And I'm so gad he did. So I go in to ask some mindless, first time tattoo questions, and the man standing behind the counter is so nice, and deals with my mindless, first time tattoo questions like a pro. Then, he hands me some books to show the artists' work. I did not have to get two pages into his book to know that he was the artist for me. Shawn's work is so amazing. He also did a great job on my tattoo. He made sure to check on me, a lot (even though I think I took it like a champ), which I appreciated. He truly looked concerned as he repeated jabbed me with tiny, mechanized needles. I'm really surprised that this place doesn't have any presence on Yelp. They've been there over a decade. This was the tattoo shop we unfortunately found ourselves in around two or three weeks ago. Very unprofessional, discourteous staff (two guys 30-35). The one came in after we arrived cursing and carrying on about his life issues. The other likely never made eye contact and couldn't have seemed less interested in his work. Definitely considered leaving and we should have. While the tattoos came out OKAY, the experience was bad and the prices were egregious to say the absolute least. Very disappointed with my choice to come to this parlor. Avoid if you can, prices are cheaper in NJ, and staff are almost definitely friendlier and more accommodating. If there was a way to contest the ridiculously high price I paid without it really being a pointless time consuming small court claim, I most definitely would. Don't go here. Moo Tattoo is a clean, well-managed shop with knowledgeable and talented artists. Some reviewers are giving this shop 1-star because the owner, Noah, expects people to have some sort of idea about how the world works before coming into the shop. If you're the type of person who wants to know how much a tattoo costs before you decide on the design, size, or number of colors in the tattoo, you'll probably want to go to another shop. Are you the type of person who goes to Home Depot to pick out a color of house paint, and expect a high-five from every employee in the store when you settle on "ecru" rather than "eggshell"? You'll probably want to go to another shop. Do you go expect people to know what you're thinking, despite the fact that you can't put a coherent sentence together without "like" or "knawmean" being every third word that comes out of your mouth? Write your thoughts down, and read them out loud before coming into the shop. Practice makes perfect. Are you the type of person who gives small, independently-owned businesses one-star Yelp! reviews because you're used to getting your way and aren't accustomed to people looking at you like you're an idiot, when you are, in fact, an idiot? Find another shop, and after you leave that other shop, throw yourself in front of a bus. Are you a rational, intelligent individual, who wants a nice tattoo done by talented artists in a clean shop that is within walking distance to several bars and restaurants in the heart of Philadelphia? The only reason Moo did not get 5 stars is because it was borderline difficult to get an appointment, it took a few weeks to get in there to get the work done after the initial consultation. I do believe that these guys are true artists, not "trained chimps." Yes, they can tattoo something from a book very easily, but they can also create a tattoo from their own artistic talents. I went in to get an existing tattoo worked on, revamped and embellished, so I basically gave Shawn artistic license to create something that would compliment and save my shitty tattoo. He did not disappoint. He took into consideration the style of the image and produced an addition for it that I would have never thought of myself, while fixing the ugly that was already there. This was not my first tattoo, it was my seventh, so I'm saying all of this out of experience and knowledge. I recommend Moo Tattoo and will definitely be going there again. I had an idea, drew it out, Shawn (who moved out of state and no longer there) re-drew it with artist precision, he made a couple of versions for me to choose, which was awesome and then we finalized plans to begin tattooing! I've gotten three very simple black tattoos here over the past several years and have always had a pleasant and comfortable experience. The artists are incredibly helpful, polite and talented - plus the place is clean and comfortable enough to bring your mom there. The shop itself is a walk-up on South Street and in the same building as Warrior Piercing, which looks slightly intimidating from below. No worries - once you climb the narrow stairs and head into Moo, you're greeted with a clean, brightly-lit shop covered in kitschy cow art. Prices are reasonable and you should discuss beforehand. Each time I got tattooed I brought a drawing, discussed with the artist and he made suggestions and changes as needed. Don't be an idiot and show up with no planning, no phone call and no solid idea or reference material. It's a small place. There are usually just two artists there. Think ahead! You'll benefit from e-mailing or stopping by for a consultation to get some initial questions out of the way. read more

I've been to a few tattoo shops in the city/area and out of state, and Moo ranks right up there in professionalism, talent, and customer service. I've had smaller half hour tattoos done there, as well as larger multiple-appointment pieces and each has been treated with the same importance and attention to detail as the next. I've personally only been tattooed by Shawn (http://shawndubin.com/) but been there enough to witness John and others handle customers and tattoo appointments, and they're all great artists. While he did make a condescending comment when I asked if my friend could stand back there with me when I got my tattoo, it wasn't like he was a total asshole or something. I had a tattoo done at Moo last week by Shawn and I'm absolutely amazed at the work. I had a crappy looking fairy on my chest that was a decent size. I e-mailed Shawn several pictures of Chrysanthemums and asked if the fairy could be covered up with one or a few of these flowers. Shawn made this crappy fairy completely invisible under one flower and some leaves - I couldn't find the fairy even before he added color! He used shading to basically erase it under the flower, and then colored it in. I can't believe what an awesome job he did - Shawn is a truly talented artist and I will be going to him for tattoo work from now on. This all started with a well-placed Facebook ad. I'd been toying with the idea of getting another tattoo, when I saw a post for their Friday the 13th special. I emailed with a design I had in mind and got an answer immediately. All I had to do was book an appointment, so I did. I got to the shop at 7:45 before my 8:00 appointment. Considering it was the last day of their special, there were still some people waiting. Around 8:30 my artist double checks what I wanted, come to find out the design I emailed didn't get to him. No problem, I'm sure they were super busy all weekend. My artist was a guy named Bash. Once he cleaned up from his last client, he started drawing my design stencil and made sure I got some food while he was drawing since it would take a while. I came back from pizza and we started. My only thing close to a complaint is that I emailed saying I wanted my tattoo on the inside of my right calf, but was told the promotion was for outsides of legs or arms. Not really a problem, I just wish I had been told this earlier. So I asked for above my right ankle. Bash brought everything I wanted to a clear reality and made the process extremely easy and (mentally) pain free. His artwork is stunning and he was a cool guy to talk to. Another artist was in the shop at that time too, who was really pleasant as well. I wasn't rushed, I was treated well, and they made everything work almost exactly as I'd hoped. In September 2015 my sister and I went to Noah to get matching tattoos. We had 3 pictures to use to get the tattoo we wanted. One for the shape, one for the coloring, and one to incorporate. We chose a water color picture of Tinkerbell with "Off to Neverland, June 8, 2015" written under it in memory of our mother. When we showed up, early, the shop was locked. We waited patiently and even browsed the store next to the shop. When Noah finally got there he seemed like he just woke up. He was not friendly. We had to wait for about 45 mins for him to get the stencil ready. We had a confirmed appointment with him. Because all of our communication was done via email I understand that he may have not prepared in case we didn't show up since there wasn't a deposit made but it was still part of the costumer service that was awful. My sister went first. As we were discussing colors, Noah seemed very stuck on what he wanted to do. Use Black for the letters. My sister and I didn't want black. I started to walk back to where he was tattooing and he yelled at me that I wasn't allowed back there. This is my 6th tattoo and never have I or my friends been told they couldn't be where I was getting tattooed. When she was done I didn't want to get mine. The shape was ok, the coloring wasn't at all what we asked for. But, we wanted matching tattoos so I went ahead with mine. Our tattoos do not match. The shape of mine is extremely sloppy, the coloring looks like it was colored in with crayons. He outlined mine because of my skin tone which he didn't ask about before he did it. We chose this place because of work we have seen done by the artists there and was very impressed with the watercolor tattoos pictured on their website and on Facebook. Noah wasn't very chatty, I'm not sure he spoke more then 10 words to me while tattooing me. While the tattoo was healing I was trying to do everything you shouldn't like peal it so that some of the bad would come off. I'm very upset about the lack of quality of costumer service and actual product that my sister and I received especially for the amount of money we paid.
