Thank you Carbon and Ron for leading this Instructional course on both Theoretical and Hands-on techniques on how to ride a mototrcycle. I took the 2-day in person CMSP and it is a fast-paced course. First few hours we were going over the CMSP handbook ( not the DMV one, its different), and by the afternoon we are on the bikes riding. ( This depends on the class size) As a beginner, with zero knowledge and zero experience this is THE class to take regardless of skill level. Emphasis on THE, because this class breaks down the very basics and the details of the dos and donts. Its very encouraged to take this class, dont let your ego or clout thinking "naw i'll just learn it on my own from some social media influencer or Youtuber". Yeah no dont. Carbon was great because he uses his own experience as a motorcyclist as an example to some of the everyday scenrios every motorcyclist will and potential face whether on the road, street, or racetrack. He will always stress that this is for your safety. Both Carbon and Ron were very patient and encouraged us all on what we did well or messed up. Easily pointing out what to work on. I took the Motorcyclist Training Course over the weekend (03/22/2025 - 03/23/2025) at Mt. Sac. I went in thinking I would not learn a lot (as i learn best by doing) and would spend little time actually on a bike and a lot of time in the classroom. Well... Darrel and Ron were the instructors with Darrel providing the classroom instruction and both he an Ron training riders on the rage with class provided motorcycles. Classroom: There is no way you will leave this class without a firm understanding of the dangers of riding a motorcycle AND what you can do to avoid them. You will be taught all of the controls that are on a motorcycle so when u approach one u will know exactly what you are looking at and what it does. It did not go into grave detail about engine parts or anything like that but how to control the bike in all situations is thoroughly explained. If you apply yourself, you will leave the classroom ready for the range and ready to apply that newly acquired knowledge to hone the skill of riding. Classroom experience was 5-Star Range: Everyone was assigned a motorcycle that suited them and their learning experience. HERE IS WHERE I WISH I COULD GIVE 10 STARS!!! Have you ever heard the phase "He on yo helmet!". They were on our HELMETS!!!! You could not make ONE wrong move without getting the feedback from BOTH instructors. No matter how good you did riding, they found your flaws and made you address them. They were HARD on us. Why? Because riding is dangerous and you have to ALWAYS be on your toes. First day riding I was nervous. But after a few exercises I got the hang of the basics by applying what I learned in the class and read before class. By day 2 it felt like I had been riding for much longer than 2 days lol. I passed the written test in the class with a 96% and got a perfect scoring on the riding skills test. Had Darrel not been on my Helmet reminding me "TURN YO HEAD BEFORE THE TURN! COVER THE CLUTCH! DONT COVER THE BREAK!" and triple repeating what would be on the written exam, I don't think I would have done as well. If Ron had not been on my helmet reminding me to down shift when I come to a stop, I would not be ready to take off when need be from a stop. These brothas spared no feelings in favor of safety and education. But no one is hard on you while encouraging you if they don't believe in you. There were 12 students when we started. One student was excused. Everyone else passed and got the certificate. The student was excused for their safety and the safety of others (Non performance on the range). I completed the course yesterday and am currently waiting on the DL389 to come in the mail. I went to DMV this morning (03/24/2025), took the M1 written test, and passed that too. Most of what was on the test at DMV was covered in the Class with Darrel. If you plan to ride and are looking to educate yourself to be safe before hand... Pay the $425 and take the class. Its well worth it. It will save u so much money, heartache and pain in the long run. I have no regrets and will be sending anyone who asks to this particular class. best experience i could ask for. Derryl and Cherryl are very great at their job. the training was informative and detailed. ive been riding off road for some time now and i learned a lot how to handle my newly purchased bobber. im going to add a story of why derryl is a great and funny man. im new to motorcycles and ive left my keys in the ignition 2 times now. the first was at work and the 2nd was on the 2nd day of my training course. we were on our first break. my motorcycle was in my eye sight from the parking lot. i noticed derryl checking out my bike and thought he wiped something off the bike. well another hour later we completed the test and he instructed us to drive over to the course if we passed. being the 2nd done i went to my bike to show a few others so they had a reference for when they bought their bike. at this time im telling the people yea check it out i just gotta find my keys. as im looking through my pockets and back pack i told them all "i think i did something dumb. i think i left the keys in the ignition" then it hit me derryl was checking out my bike. a few asked "you think he stole your keys" i said no hes teaching me a lesson. i did the long walk of shame back to the class seen him grading a test and asked "hey buddy......by any chance.....did you happen to find some keys?" his response was nothing short of comedy gold. he said " you know i was checking out a bike, and i did notice some keys in the ignition. now i knew that couldnt possibly be one of my students" the whole time im looking down laughing because this man was having a good time busting a new riders balls. we spent the rest of the time joking about turning off the practice bikes because some people in the course has a problem with letting bikes die. so i would yell back WHO!!!! NAME HIM!! after all this and the class passing the course i went to get AAA to jump my bike with another student and who comes pulling up? Derryl asking wheres my battery. i told him and he says "no problem well get you jumped right now. no need for AAA" before leaving Derryl said just dont have a stalling problem or youre in trouble. shook his hand said bye and got ready to leave. because i was on their bikes for 5 hours i let my clutch out too quick and stalled. me and the other student just said fffuuuuuuuuuu@@@@%%%%%. but i got lucky and it started again. derryl is a great instructor and i wouldnt have wanted to take a course from anyone else. Sac, but I was welcomed by Coach Carbon who was a big help with both the written exam and the motorcycle riding training. The class was very thorough and had a clear lesson plan from the start. The structure was organized and I was able to learn the 9 chapters required for the written exam on motorcycle safety. The riding portion was with a smaller group of 6, but it was a good pace and beginner-friendly for both days. I was able to learn the basics on how to ride a motorcycle and also the more advanced techniques on day two. The enthusiasm and passion can be felt from Coach Carbon as well as Coach Roy at this program. I'm so happy with my experience with the beginner training class. I was lucky to have Carbon and Ron as my trainers. Keep in mind, they are training you to do something that is dangerous. They are firm in their guidance and won't let you just pass because you paid to be in the class. Their goal is to ensure your safety and knowledge of the dangers of riding as much as possible before letting you pass. If you can't handle honest (what some may view as harsh) feedback, maybe riding isn't for you. Also, read the email that is sent out with information about class requirements before going. Amazing place to learn the basic fundamentals of riding a motorcycle as well as re learning basic riding knowledge even though I been riding for quite a while I did learn a lot of new stuff. After weeks of struggling to get into an AMO class closer by my house, having it get cancelled, refusing to refund me (but not giving me options to pick a different class time)--and also considering MTC classes are a state/DMV thing, I wasn't really hopeful that this would be a good experience. It was just something I had to get done. This class turned out to be great, and Darrell specifically was great. He teaches with a perfect balance of being knowledgable but concise, and inserts just enough humor here and there to keep everyone interested and paying attention, but never so much that it's a distraction or wastes time. First of all, if you haven't considered taking the CMSP Motorcycle Training Course at Mt Sac THIS IS THE TIME TO DO IT! The class is a two day course where you learn how to become a safe rider. My instructor was Darrel. He's super knowledgeable in his craft with many years of biking experience. Day one you start by watching slides and mini videos on how to ride safely. You will also learn life saving riding techniques. Later that day you WILL be on the range on a bike! They have many different cc motorcycle options. I chose the Honda Grom! (Super fun and light weight bike, btw) Once on the field you will immediately learn about the foundations of your bike. Each step is a learning process but the process is quick! Darrell will take the time to ensure you're ready for the next step. If not, you will need to go home and practice what you've learned. But don't be dismayed! You have the opportunity to come back within a certain time span for free. Darrell wants to make sure the rider is completely capable before he passes you to the next round. On day two, we spend most of the morning learning more advanced techniques. This day will be "THE" testing day. First is the written portion which is 50 questions (I only missed one!) once you pass that you are now back on the range practicing those advanced techniques on your bike. The day will end when you pass the riding portion of the test. Once you have successfully completed the course you will receive your certification of completion. Things to be considered: 1. Wear your gear on DAY ONE. You WILL be riding! 2. Take notes! 3. If you've never been on a motorcycle or you're not familiar with one I highly recommend you YouTube the basics of the bike (ie: how to shift, bike gears, etc) although you will go over that in the class expect the class to move fast! Give yourself time to become acquainted so you're not super lost when you get there. 4. Bring snacks and water. We do not take long lunch breaks just a few 10 min breaks throughout the day. 5. Come in with a positive attitude and the willingness to learn! 6. Once you pass this course you will still need to go to DMV and pass the written exam there. This training course only waives the riding exam. 7. ARRIVE ON TIME! Id like to express my deepest gratitude to Darrell at Mt Sac for teaching me what I've learned. I will take these skills to become a safer and skilled rider. He made the class fun and enjoyable. I was excited the entire time. I passed the course on the first try! My entire class did actually! I am now comfortable riding motorcycles on my own. Having absolutely no previous experience on a motorcycle, I now feel confident about the learning of how to operate a motorcycle. They teach you at a beginners pace and don't move forward until you grasp the current concept. They teach safe practices and habits as well as what to do in unexpected/dangerous situations. The class was great. Well organized. Well taught. Very helpful. My story: I rode a GSXR 1100, self taught 33 years ago and have only ridden 20 miles since. Going 33 years without riding or knowing how to ride properly can be challenging. I decided to get my motorcycle license and bought a Harley Fatboy. Signing up to a local place that's been around for decades to LEARN how to ride and get the license was a double bonus. I showed up to my two day class on 4/29/25 and 4/30/25 and was met with a down to earth instructor name Darrell. Immediately felt a good vibe in the class of 10 students. Darrell was very patient, clear with instruction, and just an all around good dude! I don't do many reviews but felt the need to share my experience. I was nervous as snit to take this course and walked away feeling a sense of knowledge on what I need to do while on the road. I was very surprised that this class was designed for someone that never rode a bike to someone that just wanted to be proficient and safer on the road. Carbon is one of the best instructors I've ever met, he is chill, very knowledgeable about motorcycles and taught us a lot especially on safety and skills. I've been driving for 18 years and riding bicycles my entire life. I recently decided that I wanted to purchase a motorcycle to save on gas while traveling alone. Before taking this course, I had zero knowledge of motorcycle riding and it had been years since I attended school, so I was half expecting to fail outright. From the jump, our instructor, Carbon, was extremely knowledgeable in ALL aspects of motorcycles. This was very helpful because during our breaks, we were able to bombard him with questions and he would patiently help us to understand what was obviously his biggest passion. I was also really impressed with his ability as an instructor and leader. If someone had a question, concern or even made a joke, he would take the time to validate it and then return to the topic at a very natural pace without coming off as disingenuous. When we were on the bikes, he was stern with his instruction and critiques. The course material was thorough and easy to understand. I felt a bit overwhelmed by the time we finished the in-class portion of day one, since I had never ridden before and it seemed more difficult than I imagined. However, the hands-on training was split into very small segments to ensure our understanding. Overall this is an incredibly valuable course that any would-be motorcyclist should take.
