We have been part of this Academy for about 6 months after our daughter won a prize that included a free birthday party and 2 weeks of class. We should have thought twice when we enrolled and were given a log in with "gay" in the password. Considering we are a same sex household, we called and were less than comfortable with the "reassurance." Initially we were excited, but our daughter has started to struggle with getting enough rest between school and karate. They make you sign a 12 month contract and refuse to consider letting you terminate that contract because "money is tight." It's irrelevant that our child is struggling... keep paying your dues and come back another time. I don't want to come back to a place I do not believe supports my family. So be wary... it's about the $167 a month... not the kids. read more

First of all they give 1 free class that really sells your kid and they want to do it. They provide the basic uniform and then schedule you to come back for the class. My son is 4 and was so excited. We were too! We came back for the class and it was o my 20-25 minutes long. Then is when they bring you into the office to discuss payment and a contract. They wanted $1400 for a year. I'm sorry but for 1 -2 classes per week at a 20-25 minute length I don't see how that is worth it. Definitely felt like all they want is your money. We didn't sign up and will be looking elsewhere that doesn't want to take you for all your money. Update: According to the reply from this martial arts academy I am reviewing the wrong place. That is completely incorrect. I used to live in Simi Valley, CA, I just haven't updated my profile. And he said I have the pricing wrong, but I still have the paperwork to prove it. Both my kids have gone here, with my oldest now attending. The facilities are clean and well organized. The instructors maintain a high level excellence and professionalism when teaching and Master Tippet (Owner) has been teaching for many years and has extensive knowledge on martial arts in general. The place definitely feels like a family. Everyone is very friendly and all the instructors are easy to talk to and very helpful. This is a TRADITIONAL school so theres a alot of importance put on respect, culture, mentality and character as much as the physical aspect of martial arts. AMAA has been such a great experience for our child. He has grown so much within his first 3 months of class. His focus and discipline has improved incredibly and he absolutely loves going to class. It isn't a chore to get him to go twice a week! We like how the kids are learning self-defense skills but we love the emphasis on character development, discipline, self esteem, etc even more! The instructors are amazing and they know our kids by name (even though our youngest isn't taking classes yet). They greet them by name every time we walk through the door. My son started here 5 years ago when we moved to AZ. He was already an advanced belt in Karate but was required to start over as a white belt here - looking back that was the best decision. There is no skipping belts and jumping ahead - all students learn the basics and move up as they learn. My son is now a black belt and learning to instruct the lower ranks. Martial arts is certainly an investment of time and money (I checked the prices of other places in the area and AMAA is right in line) but the payoff to see what a respectful and mature teenager my son has become is worth it. Absolutely terrible. Very expensive, higher rank students with very poor technique. If you dont know what to look for, watch for consistency when observing a class, or looking at some of the action photos. You will not see consistency between the students performing the same techniques. I understand individual capabilities, but fundamentally, the techniques should be executed similarly and not have a huge variance. Everyone has their own opinion about this, but I don't see how a young child can be a true black belt. This school and my experience with nearly every Tae Kwon Do school is that you pay for your belt, you dont earn it - Selling a false sense of security. My recommendation is to avoid this place and if you dont know what to look for, just stay clear of Tae Kwon Do, and search for a different style of Karate/Martial Art. read more

When I moved to the Surprise area, from Phoenix, I was looking for a school that taught similar techniques that I had learned. I found Arrowhead Martial Arts. I studied under the exact same style that Arrowhead Martial Arts taught. I have the exact same sparring gear as Arrowhead Martial Arts requires. I thought I would fit right in. I would have liked to finish at Arrowhead Martial Arts dojang; however, I ran into problems. I could only attend 2 classes a week, I was used to 4 a week. I was required to buy their sparring gear, which was exactly like mine, Century. Mine was in perfect condition--no cracks and clean. They wanted me to sign a 1-year contract--it was month to month in Phoenix. Now the price, Arrowhead Martial Arts wanted, get this, $1,000 more per year for the exact same thing classes that I had already learned, and I would have had to start at 3 grades lower. To me it was all about the money: 2 x a week, new sparring gear, $1,000 more per year, 3 grades lower---no way!! read more

When we signed our son up for the Li'l Dragon program over 7 years ago, we weren't sure what we were getting into, but we are so glad we did. Our son is a 2nd Degree Black Belt at 13 years old. He trains at AMAA 4 days a week and is a Junior Instructor on top of that. As he progressed through his years, AMAA requested notes from his teachers and us as his parents ensuring that Robby was following the "Black Belt Attitude". I've always appreciated that. It really reinforced the ideas, from the academy, to school all the way to home. Master Tippet and Mrs Master Tippet have a true wish for their students to do well. Mrs Master Tippet was Robby's first instructor and now that he is a Black Belt, she treats him as an equal in the Black Belt class. They teach a kind of respect at the academy that is lost in other places. It truly feels like a family! There are other families that have been going to the academy for many years and we are glad that our son has such great friends and role models. I love that they encourage family participation. As parents, we sit along the mat and we can clap and cheer and yell on for our child, or their friends. We are encouraged to provide positive reinforcement. So many of the parents actually participate in the Black Belt Challenge mountain run. It is great to see so much family support! My first impression of this school was friendly and inviting. My daughter and I was searching for structure and found it. My grandson is the only child and was lacking social skills, communication and behavior skills. We observed the class and the instructor and the energy was contagious. As someone who went there for 5 years and has left for 1 year. I am glad to have the experience of going to AMAA. The learning experience is amazing, I have never gone to a place more friendly than here. When you get to 2nd degree black belt(which takes a while) you do the same thing over and over again. Also Master Tippet can be aggressive with his teaching methods but it is how he teaches. After a while I got bored and decided it was time to leave. This "academy" is a belt factory. Just want to make sure that is loud and clear for anyone thinking of going here or enrolling their child. There are a tremendous number of rank test for superfluous belts and sub-ranks, pressure on everyone to participate in tournaments "because tournaments are expensive for the school to put on". Intermediate and advanced ranks lack core competencies like how to throw a proper punch or kick without flailing your arms all over. There is great focus on things like board breaking (which I've seen many kids get injured because of the aforementioned poor technique). The promotion ceremonies are a madhouse, analogous to when Oprah Winfrey gives out a free gift to the audience at the end of a show, completely lacking reverence or appreciation for the martial arts tradition. If your child is sedentary then this is better than sitting in front of the TV. If your main focus is proper technique, learning real self defense, and you don't want to feel like a dollar sign every time you walk through the door, please look somewhere else. As soon as my non-refundable year contract is over, I'm pulling my child out and going to a more traditional dojo, not one that is a cash-grab and under delivers. read more
